Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to create a computer-aided system for diagnosing retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) by analyzing the shape of retinal vessels.
  • Researchers analyzed 200 fundus images from preterm infants and developed two methods to measure vessel tortuosity, finding that one method was better for detecting severe ROP stages.
  • Findings showed a strong link between ROP severity and increased vessel tortuosity and width, along with decreased vascular angles, highlighting the potential for improved ROP diagnosis through quantitative vessel analysis.

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a retinal disorder that occurs in preterm infants with low birth weight and is the leading cause of preventable blindness in children. Early identification of high-risk patients and early diagnosis and timely treatment of ROP can substantially improve patients' visual outcomes.
