In the brain, both neurons and glial cells work in conjunction with each other during information processing. Stimulation of neurons can induce calcium oscillations in astrocytes which in turn can affect neuronal calcium dynamics. The 'glissandi' effect is one such phenomenon, associated with a decrease in infraslow fluctuations, in which synchronized calcium oscillations propagate as a wave in hundreds of astrocytes.

Article Synopsis
  • A key limitation of traditional behavioral epidemiological models is their assumption that human behavior remains unchanged, while in reality, behavior is highly fluid during events like a pandemic.
  • To address this, the authors propose a new framework that integrates how our brains adapt (neuronal plasticity) with a standard disease spread model, allowing for a more realistic representation of how human behavior responds to fear and awareness efforts during a pandemic.
  • Their findings suggest that there’s an ideal duration for public awareness broadcasts to effectively reduce the impact of the pandemic, emphasizing that certain brain activity factors are significant in influencing how people react and adapt to these health crises.
