The treatment of allergic diseases, such as asthma, with both conventional and novel therapies presents a challenge both in terms of optimal effect and cost. On the other hand, traditional therapies utilizing natural products such as onion have been in use for centuries with demonstrated efficacy and safety but without much knowledge of their mechanims of action. In this study, we investigated if the anti-inflammatory effects of onion bulb extract (OBE) are mediated the modulation of the EGFR/ERK1/2/AKT signaling pathway, and whether OBE can synergise with steroids to produce greater anti-inflammatory actions.

Background: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune inflammatory disease which involves the loss of self-tolerance with hyperactivation of autoreactive T- and B-cells. Protein tyrosine phosphatase non-receptor type 22 (PTPN22) encodes for lymphoid specific phosphatase (LYP) which is a key negative regulator of T lymphocyte activation. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between gene functional variant R620W and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) by comparing its prevalence in Kuwaiti SLE patients and controls.
