Aortoesophageal fistula is a rare disorder that may result from many causes. In this report, we describe the unique case of a 71-year-old woman who developed an aortoesophageal fistula following prolonged placement of a nasogastric tube. The presence of dense fibrous adhesions between the aorta and esophagus may have facilitated the development of aortoesophageal fistula in this patient.

A patient with Whipple's disease presented with a long prodromal period characterized by granulomatous lymphadenitis and progressive lymphedema of the extremities. No gastrointestinal tract symptoms were present and a small bowel biopsy sample was normal. His clinical condition deteriorated with the onset of lymphocytic myocarditis.

Histological findings on repeat endomyocardial biopsy and changes in left ventricular ejection fraction early during immunosuppressive treatment were studied in 20 patients with documented myocarditis. All patients presented with heart failure of less than six months' duration and a left ventricular ejection fraction of less than or equal to 0.40.

A mouse model system has been developed to examine the ability of purified virus proteins to protect mice from infection with the paramyxovirus simian virus 5. The system is based on the infection of mouse lungs by intranasal administration of infectious virus. The relative amounts of virus proteins and nucleic acid present within infected lungs were estimated either by Western blot analysis of disrupted lung tissues or by in situ hybridization studies using cryostat sections of infected lungs.

We previously developed a cross-sectional echocardiographic technique for quantitatively mapping the endocardial surface of the left ventricle and on which regions of abnormal wall motion can be superimposed in their correct spatial distribution. This endocardial mapping technique (EMT) provides a measure of the left ventricular endocardial surface area (ESA in cm2), the area of abnormal wall motion (AWM in cm2), and the overall percent dysfunction (%AWM) as a measure of the functional "infarct size." To test this approach, we compared the EMT measurements with the actual endocardial surface area (in cm2) and pathologic infarct size (both percent infarct by volume and percent endocardial surface overlying infarct) measured at later autopsy in 20 adults (14 men, six women) ranging in age from 47 to 76 years (mean 64 +/- 9.

The recombinant plasmid pHG100, containing a 5.2-kb DNA fragment from Bacteroides fragilis, complemented defects in homologous recombination, DNA repair and prophage induction to various levels in an Escherichia coli recA mutant strain. There was no DNA homology between the cloned B.

A glutamine synthetase (GS) gene, glnA, from Bacteroides fragilis was cloned on a recombinant plasmid pJS139 which enabled Escherichia coli glnA deletion mutants to utilize (NH4)2SO4 as a sole source of nitrogen. DNA homology was not detected between the B. fragilis glnA gene and the E.

An atrial septal mass was identified by echocardiogram in a patient with multiple subcutaneous lipomas. In order to differentiate the benign condition of lipomatous hypertrophy from myxoma, thrombus and other tumors, nuclear magnetic resonance and computed tomographic imaging were performed. Both techniques identified the adipose nature of the tissue noninvasively, consistent with the diagnosis of lipomatous hypertrophy.

A cell-bound bacteriocin was extracted from a Bacteroides fragilis BF-11 strain by treating the cells with a low-molarity buffer (0.01 M Tris-hydrochloride, pH 8.0).

A method is described for the preparation of foetal calf serum from blood drawn by heart puncture from calf foetuses obtained from a local municipal abattoir. This method differs from that previously described in that the Seitz Supra EK filter pads used in preliminary purification steps have been abandoned. These pads contain significant amounts of pyrogenic bacterial lipopolysaccharides and attempts to depyrogenate them with sodium hypochlorite, hydrogen peroxide and 1% foetal calf serum were unsuccessful.

The synthetic compound 1,2-dimethylhydrazine is employed in carcinogenesis studies because of its reliable and specific ability to produce colon tumors in rodents. Male Fischer rats were treated at 7 weeks of age with a single oral dose of 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (35 mg/kg) and examined at autopsy 1.5 years later when the incidence of colon tumors is approximately 80%.
