Intestinal ligation during ovariohysterectomy has not been previously reported in dogs. Risk factors for this complication appear to be the same as those for ureteral injury, namely decreased surgical visualization due to small patient size and small incision size. This case report describes how the presentation of intestinal ligation in a 2-kg, 11-month-old chihuahua can mimic that of iatrogenic ureteral injury with vomiting, anorexia, and severe azotemia.

Case Summary: A 1-year-old male neutered domestic shorthair cat presented on an emergency basis with clinical signs suspected to be secondary to organophosphate (OP) toxicity. Manganese is a common component of human joint supplements and may be a source of ingestion and subsequent toxicosis in dogs. Although hepatotoxicity secondary to manganese toxicosis has been reported in dogs before, no descriptions of successful management of manganese toxicosis has been reported in veterinary literature. The bacterial enzyme EndoS specifically cleaves glycans bound to immunoglobulin G (IgG) molecules. Because this deglycosylation procedure leads to a diminished immune response, this enzyme has potential applications as a therapeutic for autoimmune disorders. Although the diminished immune response is attributed to a structural change in the Fc region of IgG antibodies, the specific nature of this structural change is not known due to the variety of results obtained by different experimental approaches.

A variety of G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) screening technologies have successfully partnered a number of GPCRs with their cognate ligands. GPCR-mediated β-arrestin recruitment is now recognized as a distinct intracellular signaling pathway, and ligand-receptor interactions may show a bias toward β-arrestin over classical GPCR signaling pathways. We hypothesized that the failure to identify native ligands for the remaining orphan GPCRs may be a consequence of biased β-arrestin signaling.

Drugs targeting the orphan receptor GPR35 have potential therapeutic application in a number of disease areas, including inflammation, metabolic disorders, nociception, and cardiovascular disease. Currently available surrogate GPR35 agonists identified from pharmacologically relevant compound libraries have limited utility due to the likelihood of off-target effects in vitro and in vivo and the variable potency that such ligands exhibit across species. Variation in pharmacology and function of ligands at species orthologs can be a confounding feature in understanding the biology and role of poorly characterized receptors. Substantial selectivity in potency of a number of GPR35 agonists has previously been demonstrated between human and rat orthologs of this G protein-coupled receptor. Via a bioluminescence resonance energy transfer-based assay of induced interactions between GPR35 and β-arrestin-2, addition of the mouse ortholog to such studies indicated that, as for the rat ortholog, murine GPR35 displayed very low potency for pamoate, whereas potency for the reference GPR35 agonist zaprinast was intermediate between the rat and human orthologs.

Liquid crystals are intriguing electrically responsive soft matter systems. We report previously unexplored field-induced changes in the structures of some frustrated liquid crystal phases and describe them theoretically. Specifically, we have discovered using resonant x-ray scattering that the four-layer intermediate smectic phase can undergo either a transition to the ferrielectric (three-layer) phase or to the ferroelectric phase, depending on temperature.

The depolarisation ratio for the Raman-active phenyl stretching mode has been measured over the whole of the mesophase range, and the orientational order parameters deduced, in the uniaxial nematic liquid crystal octylcyanobiphenyl (8CB). Linearly polarised light was incident normally on a homogeneously aligned sample and a chi(2) minimisation routine performed on the 360 degrees depolarisation ratio profile. The order parameters (P(200)) and (P(400)), together with the differential polarisability ratio, r , are used as fitting parameters and measured as a function of temperature.

A binary mixture of an antiferroelectric liquid-crystal material containing a selenium atom and a highly chiral dopant is investigated using resonant X-ray scattering. This mixture exhibits a remarkably wide four-layer intermediate smectic phase, the structure of which is investigated over a temperature range of 16K. Analysis of the resonant X-ray scattering data allows accurate measurement of both the helicoidal pitch and the distortion angle as a function of temperature.

A 35 month old child was referred for electrophysiology testing with pendular nystagmus, corresponding head oscillations and reduced vision. Flash visual evoked potential (VEP) revealed large responses at the right occiput (but not the left occiput) from the right eye and similar large responses at only the left occiput from the left eye, indicating absent/deficient crossover at the chiasm. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan subsequently confirmed absence of the optic chiasm.

Affinity maturation, the process by which an organism's response to infection becomes more specific and more effective over time, occurs after somatic hypermutation of antibody genes in B-cells. This increase in affinity might be a result of the evolution of either specific interactions between antigen and antibody over time (enthalpic factors) or antibody binding site rigidification (entropic factors) or both. Here, monoclonal antibodies, derived from antibodies elicited at different points in the murine immune response after inoculation with the same diketone hapten, have been characterized both genetically and functionally.

Objective: To evaluate usability, accuracy, and hypoglycemia detection of the GlucoWatch G2 Biographer (GW2B) in children aged 1 to 17 years.

Methods: After a 15-hour study of device accuracy, 46 children (15 <7 years, 31 > or =7 years) with type 1 diabetes were enrolled for an extended-wear outcome study: 2 daytime and 2 nighttime 15-hr wear periods each week and blood glucose monitoring 4 times daily for 3 months.

Results: A total of 531 paired GW2B/meter readings were available for accuracy assessment.
