Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE), due to their intrinsic resistance to various commonly used antibiotics and their malleable genome, make the treatment of infections caused by these bacteria less effective. The aims of this work were to characterize isolates of spp. that originated from processed meat, through phenotypic and genotypic techniques, as well as to detect putative antibiotic resistance biomarkers.

Intra-Operative Mitomycin-C as Adjuvant Therapy in External and Endonasal Dacryocystorhinostomy: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of mitomycin-C (MMC) on the success of external (Ex-DCR) or endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (En-DCR).

Method: A systematic review of randomized clinical trials of Ex- or En-DCR with and without the use of MMC to treat primary acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction (NLDO) was done. Two authors independently searched six databases from 1990 to 2019, using the terms "dacryocystorhinostomy" and "mitomycin-C.

Livestock-Associated Methicillin-Resistant (MRSA) in Purulent Subcutaneous Lesions of Farm Rabbits.

Methicillin-resistant (MRSA) are one of the main pathogens associated with purulent infections. MRSA clonal complex 97 (CC97) has been identified in a wide diversity of livestock animals. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the antibiotic resistance profiles of MRSA strains isolated from purulent lesions of food-producing rabbits.

The consumption of alcoholic beverages influences carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, although it is not yet clear whether metabolism during physical exercise at different intensities is also affected. This was the objective of the present study. Eight young and healthy volunteers performed a treadmill test to identify the running speed corresponding to a lactate concentration of 4 mM (S4mM).

Prospective assessment of malaria infection in a semi-isolated Amazonian indigenous Yanomami community: Transmission heterogeneity and predominance of submicroscopic infection.

In the Amazon basin, indigenous forest-dwelling communities typically suffer from a high burden of infectious diseases, including malaria. Difficulties in accessing these isolated ethnic groups, such as the semi-nomadic Yanomami, make official malaria data largely underestimated. In the current study, we longitudinally surveyed microscopic and submicroscopic malaria infection in four Yanomami villages of the Marari community in the northern-most region of the Brazilian Amazon.

Use of Artificial Nipples Among Brazilian Infants and Associated Factors.

Transversal study conducted in a Human Milk Bank to evaluate the factors associated with the use of artificial nipples (pacifier and/or nursing bottle) among Brazilian infants. Methicillin-Resistant CC398 in Purulent Lesions of Piglets and Fattening Pigs in Portugal.

Methicillin-resistant (MRSA) is an important clinical problem. In 2005, a livestock-associated MRSA clone was described, named CC398, being mostly associated with pigs, and causing colonization and infection in pigs and in related humans. The prevalence of these strains in food-producing pigs raised concerns about the possibility of MRSA-CC398 being a foodborne pathogen.

Real-time PCR for direct aptamer quantification on functionalized graphene surfaces.

In this study, we develop a real-time PCR strategy to directly detect and quantify DNA aptamers on functionalized graphene surfaces using a Staphylococcus aureus aptamer (SA20) as demonstration case. We show that real-time PCR allowed aptamer quantification in the range of 0.05 fg to 2.

Brazilian Society of Surgical Oncology guidelines for surgical treatment of endometrial cancer in regions with limited resources.

Background: Approximately 70% of cancer-related deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries. In addition to social and racial inequalities, treatment options in these countries are usually limited because of the lack of trained staff and equipment, limited patient access to health services, and a small number of clinical guidelines.

Objectives: The Brazilian Society of Surgical Oncology developed this guideline to address these barriers and guide physicians treating patients with endometrial cancer (EC) in regions with limited resources and few specialized centers.

Evaluation of the patient safety climate in hospitalization units: a cross-sectional study.

Objective: To evaluate the perception of nurses from different hospitalization units of a teaching hospital in Goiás about the climate of patient safety.

Method: An analytical cross-sectional study carried out using the Safety Attitudes Questionnaire - Short Form 2006, translated and validated for use in Brazil. All the ethical precepts in research were respected.

Introduction: Pharmacological interventions to address behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) can have undesirable side effects, therefore non-pharmacological approaches to managing symptoms may be preferable. Past studies show that music therapy can reduce BPSD, and other studies have explored how formal caregivers use music in their caring roles. However, no randomised study has examined the effects on BPSD of music interventions delivered by informal caregivers (CGs) in the home setting.

Cerebral palsy - beyond hip deformities.

Cerebral palsy is a neurologic condition with myriad musculoskeletal and articular manifestations. While every patient is unique with innumerable variations in presentation, symptoms and treatments, there are broad themes and recognizable patterns of development. Many of these findings spill over to other neurodevelopmental disorders, and lessons learned from children with cerebral palsy translate well to multiple neurologic conditions.

IgG from atopic dermatitis patients induces non-atopic infant thymic invariant natural killer T (iNKT) cells to produce IL-4, IL-17, and IL-10.

Background: Atopic dermatitis (AD) pathogenesis still needs to be elucidated, but invariant natural killer T (iNKT) cell involvement was already described by several groups. Our group has demonstrated that IgG antibodies purified from AD patients can modulate cytokine production by thymic T cells. Here we aimed to investigate if IgG from AD patients can modulate infant non-atopic thymic iNKT cells cytokine production in order to collaborate with the elucidation of AD development in infancy.

Comparison of Ponte Osteotomies and 3-Column Osteotomies in the Treatment of Congenital Spinal Deformity.

Background: Congenital spinal deformity (CSD) has traditionally been treated with 3-column osteotomies [hemivertebrectomy (HV) or vertebral column resection (VCR)] to address rigid deformities. Alternatively, multiple Ponte osteotomies (PO) may provide correction while minimizing risk. The purpose of this study was to compare safety and outcomes of patients undergoing surgical treatment for CSD with these 3 procedures.
