Article Synopsis
  • This study evaluated the effectiveness of high-resolution ultrasound (USG) and MRI in diagnosing rotator cuff injuries among 40 patients with shoulder pain over six months in Chennai, India.
  • The results showed that MRI had higher accuracy, detecting 97.5% of supraspinatus tears, compared to 82.5% found by USG, with MRI also showing better overall sensitivity and specificity.
  • While MRI is more precise, USG is still a reliable and cost-effective option for initial diagnosis, especially when combined with MRI for a thorough assessment.

Article Synopsis
  • India's high tuberculosis (TB) rates are worsened by silicosis, which increases TB susceptibility and complicates treatment outcomes, highlighting the need for better diagnosis and management of affected patients.
  • A study analyzed survival data from 137 patients with both silicosis and TB and 2,605 TB-only patients, revealing that silico-tuberculosis patients had a significantly higher mortality risk and shorter survival times compared to those with just TB.
  • The findings suggest an urgent need for targeted healthcare strategies, including collaborative screening for TB and silicosis among high-risk occupational groups within India's TB program.

The study of natural disasters is a crucial field that involves analyzing the occurrence, impact, and aftermath of various natural hazards that can cause significant harm to communities and the environment. Efficient waste management and environmental protection require proper classification of waste. Analyzing natural disasters and categorizing waste can be a time-consuming task, and conventional methods often struggle with it.

Background: Construction laborers succumb to poor health due to the inherent workplace health hazards and poor socio-economic living conditions. With rising healthcare expenses, the increased risk of poor health may aggravate their economic status, pushing them deeper into poverty.

Settings And Design: The current cross-sectional multicenter study comprehensively investigated the determinants of health, health-seeking behavior, and poor economic impact regarding catastrophic health expenditure (CHE) among construction laborers.

Objective: This study aimed to identify peripapillary microvascular changes in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI).

Patients And Methods: In this prospective study, 66 eyes of 36 subjects with AD, 119 eyes of 63 with MCI, and 513 eyes of 265 controls with normal cognition were enrolled. Peripapillary capillary perfusion density (CPD), capillary flux index (CFI), and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness were determined.

The present investigation focuses on the fabrication of Copper-High Entropy Alloy (HEA) surface Metal Matrix Composite (MMC) using the solid-state Friction Stir Process (FSP) and the characterization of wear characteristics. Higher hardness values at the level of 770HV were the cornerstone in its selection, in addition to identifying several appropriate considerations for combining the AlCoCrCuFe HEA in Cu-HEA surface MMCs. Because of the combination of FSP and HEA, the produced composite had a fine microstructure and increased hardness.

Background: Air pollution is a significant contributor to respiratory illness globally, and in India, evidence is scarce on whether smoking exacerbates this problem.

Objective And Methods: We aimed at assessing if being a smoker among public transit drivers increased risk for respiratory illnesses and affected performance of pulmonary function tests in a cross-sectional study in a metropolitan city of Gujarat, western state of India. We conducted a cross-sectional study among public transit drivers (those who were smoking and not smoking).

Purpose: To analyze the clinical, hormonal, and radiological characteristics of Pituitary stalk interruption syndrome (PSIS) in children with growth hormone deficiency (GHD).

Methods: This is a prospective cross-sectional study, conducted over a period of three years in a short stature clinic of tertiary care referral hospital. 57 severe short stature children with proven GHD were included in the study.

Purpose: To compare features of endogenous endophthalmitis associated with injection drug use (IDU) to endogenous endophthalmitis from other etiologies.

Methods: The authors retrospectively collected data on patients with endogenous endophthalmitis due to IDU or other causes from three academic tertiary care centers over a six-year period. Differences in presenting characteristics, culture results, treatment, and visual acuity were compared between groups.

Introduction: This study aimed to assess the effects of supplementing chicken feed with leaf powder, a phytobiotic, on the gastrointestinal microbiota. The objective was to examine the microbial changes induced by the supplementation.

Methods: A total of 40, one-day-old chickens were fed their basal diet for 42 days and then divided into two groups: SG1 (basal diet) and SG2 (basal diet + 10 g/kg leaf powder).

Background: Craving, an integral aspect of addictive processes, underlies heavy alcohol consumption and alcohol use disorder (AUD). Western studies point out that craving is associated with relapse risks in AUD treatment. The feasibility of assessing and following up with craving dynamicity is not studied in the Indian context.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the repeatability of macular OCT angiography (OCTA) parameters among patients with Alzheimer's disease, mild cognitive impairment, Parkinson's disease, and individuals with normal cognition.
  • Using high-resolution imaging equipment, researchers measured metrics like perfusion density and vessel density from both 3 mm and 6 mm scans centered on the fovea.
  • Results indicated that OCTA metrics showed moderate to good repeatability across all groups, with no significant differences in repeatability between normal cognition and neurodegenerative disease participants.

Background: Roughly half of patients with alcohol use disorder prefer non-abstinence based approaches to treatment. However, only individuals who can limit their alcohol use after low-risk consumption are most likely to benefit from these approaches. This pilot study developed a laboratory-based intravenous alcohol self-administration paradigm to determine the characteristics of individuals who could successfully resist consuming alcohol after an initial exposure.

Non-compliance to intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) therapy can result in increased disease activity in neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD). Our study aims to determine effects of unplanned delay in anti-VEGF injection treatment for nAMD. This retrospective observational study included patients with delays in receiving intravitreal injections for nAMD treatment from March to May 2020 by at least 21 days.

Objective: The relationship between maternal health and health outcome of offspring has been studied extensively. However, measures such as family resilience in the context of maternal health are not well understood. The objective of this study was to determine if overall maternal health status is associated with family resilience.

The Progressive Ratio (PR) self-administration paradigm is a common pre-clinical method used to examine the motivation for a drug attributed to a craving, reward, or the relief of negative affect. The Computer-assisted Alcohol Infusion System (CAIS) enables intravenous alcohol self-administration behavior in humans. This system provides the investigator with control over the trajectory of each incremental breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) reward and the maximum BrAC allowed in a session.

Chronic binge drinking induces hepatic lipid accumulation, but only certain individuals develop alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD). Specific patterns of lipid accumulation are thought to be associated with ALD, but this has not been comprehensively investigated to date. We analyzed plasma fatty acid levels, quantified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, in a sample of patients with alcohol use disorder (AUD).
