In the neurosurgical field, the evoked potential is employed for the monitoring of intraoperative nerve function. During evoked potential monitoring, surgical manipulation-related nerve dysfunction is detected, and functional localization/nerves in the cerebral cortex are identified to prevent postoperative neurological complications. It is important to reduce the contact resistance to 2 kOmega or less on the application of plate electrodes used for recording and prevent noise by bundling electrode leads, to ensure a stable evoked potential during surgery.

We carried out intraoperative monitoring of the pudental nerve while separating vertebral spinal tumors from the spinal cord in five patients, including four infants. Although monitoring using a manometer or needle electrodes has been reported, monitoring done with disk electrodes to ascertain the compound muscle action potential (CMAP) of the external sphincter muscle has not been yet attempted. Prior to the surgical procedure, we locate a point suitable for CAMP recording of the muscle.

Screening for unruptured cerebral aneurysms (UCAs) using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and angiography (MRA) is prevalent in Japan. To reveal the prevalence of UCAs found during screening, we collected data of the results in 1999, in Tochigi prefecture. In the prefecture, of which the population was about 2 million, 26 institutions had been established in 1999, and 5,222 persons had been screened.
