l-Carnitine affects preimplantation embryo development toward infertility in mice.

l-Carnitine (l-Cn), despite the beneficial role as energy-generating substance delivering long-chain fatty acids to the β-oxidation pathway in mitochondria, has been accused to cause an endometriosis-like state to BALB/c mice manifested by increased inflammatory cytokines in serum and peritoneal fluid, accumulation of immune cells in the peritoneal cavity and uterine walls and most importantly, correlating to infertility. Exploring this type of infertility, the effect of l-Cn on preimplantation embryo development, ovarian integrity and systemic maternal immunity was studied. Using nonlinear microscopy analysis, which was shown to be a powerful tool for determining embryo quality by quantitatively estimating the lipid body (LB) content of the cells, it was shown that in vitro and in vivo administration of l-Cn significantly decreased LB mean area in zygotes.

Supervision of thrombolysis of acute myocardial infarction using telemedicine.

The treatment of acute myocardial infarction (MI) constitutes a significant problem in remote geographical areas of Greece. Furthermore, thrombolysis, the treatment of choice in the early phase of acute MI, requires the supervision of an expert. We have used thrombolytic treatment, using telemedicine, in remote medical centres.

Telecardiology services in the Aegean islands.

Telecardiology services established between the Onassion Cardiac Surgery Centre in Athens and the Primary Health Care Centre (HCC) of Naxos in the Aegean provide 24 h support. During the testing period more than 50 cases were analysed, diagnosed and treated in Naxos HCC, under the supervision of the on-call cardiologists of the Onassion Cardiac Surgery Centre. One patient with an acute myocardial infarction was evacuated to a tertiary hospital in Athens.

Health care in remote areas.

Migration from space medicine toward telemedicine services is described by potential application areas in highly populated and remote areas of Europe. Special emphasis is laid upon links between mobile patient monitoring and health care in remote areas. Pilot projects are described for home (mobile) monitoring of newborn infants endangered by sudden infant death (SID) and adults suffering from sleep apnoea.
