Objectives: The Berg Balance Scale (BBS) is a core measure of balance function in patients with stroke. Latent rank theory (LRT) is a statistical method that enables the degree of functional impairment to be ranked from the sub-items of a rating scale; each rank can then be characterized. Identification of the characteristics of balance function by rank would be beneficial for interventions to improve balance function in patients with stroke.

Objective: No reports on factors or Clinical prediction rules (CPRs) associated with walking independence among patients with vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) are available. Evidence regarding epidemiological walking independence rates is also sparse. Here, we sought to (i) obtain epidemiological data on the probability of inpatients with VCFs achieving walking independence, and (ii) develop and validate a CPR to determine walking independence in hospitalized patients with VCFs.

To identify a biomarker for the early diagnosis of enzootic bovine leukosis (EBL) caused by bovine leukemia virus (BLV), we investigated the expression of a microRNA, bta-miR-375, in cattle serum. Using quantitative reverse-transcriptase PCR analysis, we measured bta-miR-375 levels in 27 samples from cattle with EBL (EBL cattle), 45 samples from animals infected with BLV but showing no clinical signs (NS cattle), and 30 samples from cattle uninfected with BLV (BLV negative cattle). In this study, we also compared the kinetics of bta-miR-375 with those of the conventional biomarkers of proviral load (PVL), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and thymidine kinase (TK) from the no-clinical-sign phase until EBL onset in three BLV-infected Japanese black (JB) cattle.

[Purpose] To examine changes in physical activity levels between admission and discharge in patients hospitalized after stroke and fracture. [Participants and Methods] Patients with stroke (n=36) or fracture (n=41) wore an accelerometer during the daytime for three days after admission and before discharge. Physical activity was divided into sedentary behavior (SB), light-intensity (LIPA), and moderate-to-vigorous (MVPA), and then compared between hospital admission and discharge using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test.

Biosecurity enhancement contributes to the reduction of various microbial pathogens. Mammalian orthoreoviruses (MRVs) which are increasingly recognized as potentially serious problems on swine industry were used as indicators of biosecurity enhancement on two pig farms. Twelve MRVs were detected and isolated from fecal specimens of healthy pigs collected from one of the two farms in Japan.

The Goose/Guangdong-lineage (Gs/Gd) H5 high pathogenicity avian influenza viruses (HPAIVs) spread among poultry and wild birds worldwide; an association has been identified between the migration of wild birds and spread of HPAIVs. Every autumn-spring season, the mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) migrates to Japan in substantial numbers for overwintering; however, to the best of our knowledge, no virological studies have focused on mallards' susceptibility to the HPAIVs in Japan. To evaluate the susceptibility of mallards to infection with Gs/Gd H5 HPAIVs isolated during previous outbreaks in Japan, we experimentally infected the birds with various virus strains: A/chicken/Yamaguchi/7/2004 (H5N1) (clade 2.

Bovine leukemia virus (BLV) is an oncogenic virus belonging to the genus and is the causative agent of enzootic bovine leukosis. Proviral load (PVL) determined by real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) is now widely used as an indicator of not only BLV infection, but also BLV disease progression. To interpret PVLs determined by different qPCRs used in Japan, we compared a chimeric cycling probe-based qPCR, CY415, targeting the BLV tax region; a TaqMan probe-based qPCR, RC202, targeting the BLV pol region; and a TaqMan probe-based qPCR, CoCoMo, targeting the BLV long terminal repeat (LTR) region.
