Background: Psychometric validation of the Multidimensional Chronic Asthenia Scale (MCAS) was conducted in order to provide an effective tool for assessing the health-related quality of life of French-speaking patients with chronic asthenia (CA).

Methods: Items resulting from the initial formulation of the self-reported MCAS (along with other materials) were completed by French-speaking volunteers with inactive or active inflammatory bowel disease (IBD-I vs. IBD-A) or chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS).

The wheat aleurone layer is, according to millers, the main bran fraction. It is a source of nutritionally valuable compounds, such as dietary fibres, proteins, minerals and vitamins, that may exhibit health benefits. Despite these advantages, the aleurone layer is scarce on the market, probably due to issues related to its extraction.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are released to the indoor air of retail stores from numerous products and activities, but available literature lacks a systematic understanding of the variability of VOC concentrations. In this study, we measured concentrations of total VOCs (TVOC) in 32 retail stores using a high-sensitivity photoionization detector (PID). Indoor thermal comfort parameters, including temperature, relative humidity, and air velocity, were simultaneously measured using an anemometer.

Background: Various types of dementia and Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) are manifested as irregularities in human speech and language, which have proven to be strong predictors for the disease presence and progress ion. Therefore, automatic speech analytics provided by a mobile application may be a useful tool in providing additional indicators for assessment and detection of early stage dementia and MCI.

Method: 165 participants (subjects with subjective cognitive impairment (SCI), MCI patients, Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mixed dementia (MD) patients) were recorded with a mobile application while performing several short vocal cognitive tasks during a regular consultation.

Background: To evaluate the interest of using automatic speech analyses for the assessment of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and early-stage Alzheimer's disease (AD).

Methods: Healthy elderly control (HC) subjects and patients with MCI or AD were recorded while performing several short cognitive vocal tasks. The voice recordings were processed, and the first vocal markers were extracted using speech signal processing techniques.

The critical indices α', β, γ', and δ of the Quark Gluon Bags with Surface Tension Model that has a critical endpoint are calculated and compared with the exponents of other models. These indices are expressed in terms of the most general parameters of the model. Despite the usual expectations the found critical indices do not depend on the Fisher exponent τ and on the parameter [symbol: see text] which relates the mean bag surface to its volume.

Objective: To compare the extent of exposure and surgical maneuverability provided by facial translocation and transtemporal approaches for access to the infratemporal fossa and anterolateral skull base.

Materials And Methods: Surgical procedures were performed on five fresh frozen adult cadavers (ten sides) with no known pathology. Facial transfacial approaches with and without a mandibulotomy and transtemporal approaches were evaluated.

The anterolateral approach is a popular and safe method of exposing the lower cervical spine (levels C3 to T1) for management of cervical spine disease. We present a description of the technique we use in conducting the procedure, a review of the literature, and a retrospective chart review of 30 consecutive patients who underwent cervical spine exposure via a left anterolateral approach. All patients had an uneventful perioperative course, and the two patients who experienced postprocedure symptoms recovered completely within 1 month without treatment.

Objectives: (1) To assess the safety and efficacy of outpatient intracapsular tonsillectomy, which has been recently described as a less invasive means of treating obstructive tonsillar hypertrophy, in children younger than 3 years; and (2) to challenge the standard dictum that children younger than 3 years should be admitted to the hospital after tonsil and adenoid surgery.

Design: Retrospective cohort study via medical chart review and telephone interview.

Setting: Pediatric otolaryngology group practice with academic affiliation.

Objectives: To characterize the airway anatomy by upper endoscopy in children with syndromal mandibular hypoplasia and to determine whether predistraction endoscopy is predictive of the likelihood of successful outcomes after mandibular distraction.

Study Design: Retrospective chart review.

Methods: Assessment of the upper airway by subsites was qualitatively extrapolated into a devised 4-point scale.

Objectives: Standard procedures for hearing aid fitting performed in accordance with established guidelines are well tolerated, safe, and effective. In this article, we present unusual complications after hearing aid fitting that required surgical management.

Methods: Four otologists at a major university center with a combined 65 years of experience performed a retrospective analysis of their surgical practice.

Objectives: To study complications of powered intracapsular tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy (PITA) in pediatric patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

Study Design: Retrospective chart review and long-term follow-up in office or by telephone interview.

Methods: We studied 278 patients who underwent PITA between September 2000 and October 2002.

Gastric volvulus can be a medical emergency with life-threatening complications. Early surgical intervention is important to avoid potential ischemic complication that may lead to infarction of the stomach. The condition has been reported in children and in the elderly, but the majority of cases are reported in the fifth decade of life.

Endoscopic surgical approaches for chronic frontal sinusitis require the reestablishment of adequate frontal sinus ventilation and drainage for relief of symptoms. After the resection of anterior ethmoid mucosal disease and cellular structure, the anterior to posterior depth of the nasofrontal beak to the base of skull at the insertion of the ethmoidal bulla (frontal sinus ostium) often represents a critical margin for functional success. However, little information concerning this dimension is available.

We have analyzed Ca2+ transport activity in defined subcellular fractions of an isogenic set of wild-type and mutant yeast. The results, together with measurements of polypeptide expression levels and promoter::reporter gene activity, show that the Golgi Ca2+-ATPase, Pmr1, is the major Ca2+ pump under normal growth conditions. In the absence of Pmr1, we show a massive, calcineurin-dependent compensatory induction of the vacuolar Ca2+-ATPase, Pmc1.

We tested the intraoral microwaves under applied electrotherapy in cephalic neuralgia. The tests have been undertaken on 40 patients divided in 4 groups, according to the nature of the metallic components of the prosthetic appliances. There have been withdrawn practical conclusions regarding fixed prosthesis and the use of electrotherapy in the cephalic neuralgia.
