Global circular economy drives the development of sustainable alkali activated materials (AAM) for use as construction material from industrial by-products and wastes. The assessment of the potentially hazardous substances release of these new material combinations into the soil and groundwater over time is essential. In this study, the aim is the environmental assessment of three AAMs based on blast furnace slag (BFS), activated with almond shell biomass ash (ABA) as potassium source and three solid sources of silica from the agricultural industry, rice husk ash (RHA), spent diatomaceous earth (SDE) and bamboo leaf ash (BLA), using European horizontal leaching tests proposed for construction materials, for monolithic form, Dynamic Surface Leaching Test (DSLT) and for granular form, Up-flow Percolation Test and the Compliance leaching test, by simulating different scenarios of their entire life cycle.

Understanding the interactions in hybrid systems based on graphene and functional oxides is crucial to the applicability of graphene in real devices. Here, we present a study of the structural defects occurring on graphene during the early stages of the growth of CoO, tailored by the electronic coupling between graphene and the substrate in which it is supported: as received pristine graphene on polycrystalline copper (coupled), cleaned in ultra-high vacuum conditions to remove oxygen contamination, and graphene transferred to SiO/Si substrates (decoupled). The CoO growth was performed at room temperature by thermal evaporation of metallic Co under a molecular oxygen atmosphere, and the early stages of the growth were investigated.

We report the case of a term neonate who was somnolent at birth with ventilatory distress and experienced 2 seizures shortly after delivery. Laboratory tests revealed the neonate had a serum sodium of 113 mmol/L. The seizures stopped after treatment with midazolam, and the sodium was corrected slowly with 3% hypertonic saline without further sequelae.

Despite disease-modifying effects of hydroxyurea on sickle cell disease (SCD), poor adherence among affected youth commonly impedes treatment impact. Following our prior feasibility trial, the "Hydroxyurea Adherence for Personal Best in Sickle Cell Treatment (HABIT)" multi-site randomized controlled efficacy trial aimed to increase hydroxyurea adherence for youth with SCD ages 10-18 years. Impaired adherence was identified primarily through flagging hydroxyurea-induced fetal hemoglobin (HbF) levels compared to prior highest treatment-related HbF.

The aims of this work were to evaluate the reactivity of sugarcane straw ashes (SCSA) burned under controlled conditions and to analyze their reactivity in blended cement and hydrated lime pastes by thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and calorimetry. Four different ashes were produced, and burned at 600 °C, 700 °C, 800 °C and 900 °C (SCSA600, SCSA700, SCSA800 and SCSA900, respectively). These ashes were characterized by X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, particle size distribution by laser diffraction and specific area surfaces to assess their potential interest in the partial replacement of inorganic binders (Portland cement (OPC) and hydrated lime).

Apart from the anti-GD2 antibody, immunotherapy for neuroblastoma has had limited success due to immune evasion mechanisms, coupled with an incomplete understanding of predictors of response. Here, from bulk and single-cell transcriptomic analyses, we identify a subset of neuroblastomas enriched for transcripts associated with immune activation and inhibition and show that these are predominantly characterized by gene expression signatures of the mesenchymal lineage state. By contrast, tumors expressing adrenergic lineage signatures are less immunogenic.
