Eating dark and milk chocolate: a randomized crossover study of effects on appetite and energy intake.

Objective: To compare the effect of dark and milk chocolate on appetite sensations and energy intake at an ad libitum test meal in healthy, normal-weight men.

Subjects/methods: A total of 16 young, healthy, normal-weight men participated in a randomized, crossover study. Test meals were 100 g of either milk (2285 kJ) or dark chocolate (2502 kJ).

Teacher reports of hypoactivity symptoms reflect slow cognitive processing speed in primary school children.

The mediating effect of cognitive processing speed on the ability of a primary school child to achieve his/her full potential of intellectual functioning emphasizes the importance of methods to detect "slow" children. Primary school teachers may be the first to have concerns about inattentive pupils who show symptoms of hypoactivity, but may find the symptoms difficult to interpret. In the present study we ask if a primary school teacher's report of hypoactivity symptoms can be explained by the child's performance on tests of processing speed.

PedsQL™ Cognitive Functioning Scale in pediatric liver transplant recipients: feasibility, reliability, and validity.

Objective: The PedsQL™ (Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory™) is a modular instrument designed to measure health-related quality of life and disease-specific symptoms. The PedsQL™ Cognitive Functioning Scale was developed as a brief generic symptom-specific instrument to measure cognitive functioning. The objective of the present study was to determine the feasibility, reliability, and validity of the PedsQL™ Cognitive Functioning Scale in pediatric liver transplant recipients.

Background: The aetiology and pathogenesis of abdominal wall hernia formation is complex. Optimal treatment of hernias depends on a full understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms involved in their formation. The aim of this study was to review the literature on specific collagen alterations in abdominal wall hernia formation.

Percutaneous coronary intervention without onsite cardiac surgery.

Introduction: Danish health authorities have major concerns with regard to the risk and the quality of care of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) without onsite cardiac surgery. We report the results of the first Danish PCI centre without onsite cardiac surgery.

Material And Methods: A total of 245 patients underwent 254 elective PCIs during a six-month study period.

Determination of sialic acids in infant formula by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry.

A liquid chromatographic/tandem mass spectrometric method using pneumatically assisted electrospray ionization (LC-ESI-MS/MS) was developed for determination of N-acetylneuramic acid and N-glycolylneuramic acid in infant formula. Reconstituted samples were hydrolysed in dilute sulfuric acid and deproteinized with acetonitrile. The extract was analysed directly without further clean-up by hydrophilic interaction chromatography.

MRI of the central nervous system in MS patients with and without pain.

Background: Central pain (CP) is a common symptom in MS. Multiple theories are present about the mechanism of CP. Previous studies suggested that lesion of the spinothalamic tract is a necessary condition for development of CP.

A texton-based approach for the classification of lung parenchyma in CT images.

In this paper, a texton-based classification system based on raw pixel representation along with a support vector machine with radial basis function kernel is proposed for the classification of emphysema in computed tomography images of the lung. The proposed approach is tested on 168 annotated regions of interest consisting of normal tissue, centrilobular emphysema, and paraseptal emphysema. The results show the superiority of the proposed approach to common techniques in the literature including moments of the histogram of filter responses based on Gaussian derivatives.

Image dissimilarity-based quantification of lung disease from CT.

In this paper, we propose to classify medical images using dissimilarities computed between collections of regions of interest. The images are mapped into a dissimilarity space using an image dissimilarity measure, and a standard vector space-based classifier is applied in this space. The classification output of this approach can be used in computer aided-diagnosis problems where the goal is to detect the presence of abnormal regions or to quantify the extent or severity of abnormalities in these regions.

Basal and insulin mediated VLDL-triglyceride kinetics in type 2 diabetic men.

Objective: Increased very-low-density lipoprotein triglycerides (VLDL-TG) concentration is a central feature of diabetic dyslipidemia. The objective was to compare basal and insulin mediated VLDL-TG kinetics, oxidation, and adipose tissue storage in type 2 diabetic and healthy (nondiabetic) men.

Research Design And Methods: Eleven type 2 diabetic and 11 healthy men, matched for BMI and age, were included.

Depression severity is correlated to the integrity of white matter fiber tracts in late-onset major depression.

Cerebral white matter lesions (WMLs) are believed to play an important role in a subset of major depression (MD). We aimed to describe the impact of WMLs on white matter pathways in MD using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and magnetization transfer imaging. As a novel approach, we used DTI tractography to assess pathways intersected by WMLs.

The expression of IL-6 by osteoblasts is increased in healthy elderly individuals: stimulated proliferation and differentiation are unaffected by age.

Increasing age is associated with reduced bone mineral content and increased risk of fractures. This is caused by a relative insufficiency of osteoblasts compared with osteoclasts. We therefore wanted to examine the potential differences in proliferation, differentiation, and expression of cytokines between human osteoblasts (hOBs) obtained from young and elderly individuals.

School outcomes in children registered in the studies for pediatric liver transplant (SPLIT) consortium.

School performance is an important aspect of functional outcomes for pediatric liver transplant (LT) recipients. This longitudinal analysis conducted through the Studies of Pediatric Liver Transplantation (SPLIT) research consortium examines several indicators of school function in these patients. A total of 39 centers participated in data collection using a semistructured questionnaire designed specifically for this study.

Novel approach for endothelializing vascular devices: understanding and exploiting elastin-endothelial interactions.

Elastin is an essential component of arteries which provides structural integrity and instructs smooth muscle cells to adopt a quiescent state. Despite interaction of endothelial cells with elastin in the internal elastic lamina, the potential for exploiting this interaction therapeutically has not been explored in detail. In this study, we show that tropoelastin (a precursor of elastin) stimulates endothelial cell migration and adhesion more than smooth muscle cells.

Determination of acidic and neutral therapeutic drugs in human blood by liquid chromatography-electrospray tandem mass spectrometry.

A liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method using pneumatically assisted electrospray ionisation (LC-ESI-MS/MS) was developed for the simultaneous determination of paracetamol, naproxen, ibuprofen, etodolac, diclofenac, salicylic acid, lamotrigine, carbamazepine, 10-OH-carbazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital, barbital, cyclobarbital, pentobarbital, amobarbital and caffeine in human live and post-mortem whole blood. The blood proteins were precipitated in a mixture of methanol and acetonitrile, and the extract was purified by ultrafiltration. The separation was performed on an ether-linked phenyl column with polar endcapping, and both negative and positive ESI were applied.

Simultaneous determination of ochratoxin A, mycophenolic acid and fumonisin B(2) in meat products.

Here we present a method for simultaneous determination of the fungal metabolites mycophenolic acid, ochratoxin A (OTA) and fumonisin B(2) (FB(2)) in meat products. Extraction was performed with water-acetonitrile, followed by acetone-induced precipitation of salts and proteins. Purification and identification of analytes was performed by mixed-mode reversed-phase anion-exchange chromatography in direct ion-exchange mode, followed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) detection.

Improving the stability of α-conotoxin AuIB through N-to-C cyclization: the effect of linker length on stability and activity at nicotinic acetylcholine receptors.

Modification of α-conotoxin frameworks through cyclization via an oligopeptide linker has previously been shown as an effective strategy for improving in vivo stability. We have extended this strategy by investigating cyclic analogs of α-conotoxin AuIB, a selective α(3)β(4) nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) antagonist, to examine a range of oligopeptide linker lengths on the oxidative formation of disulfide bonds, activity at nAChRs, and stability to degradation by chymotrypsin. Upon nondirected random oxidation, the ribbon isomer formed preferentially with the globular isomer occurring as a minor by-product.

Similarity of pharmacodynamic effects of a single injection of insulin glargine, insulin detemir and NPH insulin on glucose metabolism assessed by 24-h euglycaemic clamp studies in healthy humans.

Aims: Two long-acting insulin analogues, insulin glargine and insulin detemir, have been developed as alternatives to neutral protamine Hagedorn (NPH) insulin, which has been the preferred basal insulin preparation for decades. The aim was to directly compare the pharmacodynamic properties of the long-acting insulin analogues and NPH insulin after a single subcutaneous injection.

Methods: The study was conducted as a double-blind, controlled, three-arm, crossover study including 10 healthy lean male volunteers.

[Identification of non-compliant hypertensive patients].

Introduction: The purpose was to contribute to the development of a validated instrument for identification of patients with poor compliance in the use of hypertension medicine in primary health care.

Material And Methods: The analysis included questionnaire data from 1,421 hypertensive patients, data from the Danish register "Patient Medical Profile" (PEM, n = 182) and electronic medicine containers (MEMS, n = 33). The analysis included preliminary scale validation resulting in five scales.

Smoking and skin disease.

Tobacco smoking is a serious and preventable health hazard that can cause or exacerbate a number of diseases and shorten life expectancy, but the role of smoking as an etiologic factor in the development of skin disease is largely unknown. Although epidemiological evidence is sparse, findings suggest that tobacco smoking is a contributing factor in systemic lupus erythematosus, psoriasis, palmoplantar pustulosis, cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma, hidradenitis suppurativa, and genital warts. In contrast, smoking may confer some protective effects and mitigate other skin diseases, notably pemphigus vulgaris, pyoderma gangrenosum, aphthous ulcers, and Behçet's disease.

Vascular Robo4 restricts proangiogenic VEGF signaling in breast.

Formation of the vascular system within organs requires the balanced action of numerous positive and negative factors secreted by stromal and epithelial cells. Here, we used a genetic approach to determine the role of SLITs in regulating the growth and organization of blood vessels in the mammary gland. We demonstrate that vascularization of the gland is not affected by loss of Slit expression in the epithelial compartment.

Targeting Robo4-dependent Slit signaling to survive the cytokine storm in sepsis and influenza.

The innate immune system provides a first line of defense against invading pathogens by releasing multiple inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin-1beta and tumor necrosis factor-alpha, which directly combat the infectious agent and recruit additional immune responses. This exuberant cytokine release paradoxically injures the host by triggering leakage from capillaries, tissue edema, organ failure, and shock. Current medical therapies target individual pathogens with antimicrobial agents or directly either blunt or boost the host's immune system.

Effect of smoking, smoking cessation, and nicotine patch on wound dimension, vitamin C, and systemic markers of collagen metabolism.

Background: Postoperative wound disruption and tissue-destructive disorders are more frequent in smokers than in nonsmokers. Impaired wound healing and altered connective tissue turnover are suggested mechanisms, but exact details remain unknown.

Methods: Full-thickness, 5-mm punch biopsy wounds were made lateral to the sacrum in 48 smokers and were randomized double-blinded to continuous smoking, abstinence with transdermal nicotine patch (TNP), or abstinence with placebo patch and 30 never smokers.

Smoking attenuates wound inflammation and proliferation while smoking cessation restores inflammation but not proliferation.

Full-thickness 5 mm punch biopsy wounds were made lateral to the sacrum in 48 smokers and 30 never smokers. After 1 week, the wounds were excised and fixed. The smokers were then randomized to continuous smoking or abstinence with a transdermal nicotine patch or a placebo patch.

Quantitative analysis of pulmonary emphysema using local binary patterns.

We aim at improving quantitative measures of emphysema in computed tomography (CT) images of the lungs. Current standard measures, such as the relative area of emphysema (RA), rely on a single intensity threshold on individual pixels, thus ignoring any interrelations between pixels. Texture analysis allows for a much richer representation that also takes the local structure around pixels into account.
