Combining near-infrared (NIR) and mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy to cover both the fundamental and overtone combination molecular vibrational resonances allows more robust analytical methods to be used, such as two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy. However, due to the strong differences in molar absorption coefficients and transparency of the optical material, it is inherently difficult to perform NIR and MIR spectroscopy on aqueous samples using a single instrument. Combining spectra from different instruments and sample presentations can result in unwanted spectral variations, which can influence the prediction models and mitigate the advantages of the combination approaches.

Aim: Previous studies have demonstrated that contact lenses coated with the antimicrobial cationic peptide Mel4, a derivative of melimine, can reduce the occurrence of keratitis. However, the antimicrobial activity of Mel4 weakened over time due to its susceptibility to proteolytic degradation. Oligo-N-substituted glycine peptoids such as TM5 and TM18 possess antimicrobial properties and are resistant to proteolytic breakdown.

Herein, we describe the design and synthesis of 16 neo-glycolipids that are potential permeation enhancers for oral drug delivery of peptide therapeutics. These amphiphilic neo-glycolipids are composed of fatty acids and various carbohydrates (d-glucose, lactose, cellobiose, maltose) via an oxime linker. The ability of the synthesized neo-glycolipids to enhance permeation of fluorescein-labelled dextran (4 kDa) or H-mannitol across intestinal epithelium was investigated in vitro using monolayers of human epithelial Caco-2 cells.

Article Synopsis
  • DLK1, a protein linked to body weight, shows a decline in levels during infancy and through puberty in girls, with significant reductions noted in healthy infants.
  • The study examined three groups: healthy infant girls, girls going through puberty, and those with central precocious puberty (CPP) undergoing treatment.
  • Results indicate that DLK1 levels are not effective for diagnosing pubertal onset due to variability among individuals, but it does correlate negatively with birth weight and body fat percentage.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study analyzed treatment differences for eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) between patients at specialized centers (EoE-Cph cohort) and a broader population (DanEoE cohort), focusing on pre-treatment practices, follow-up, and remission rates during budesonide treatment.
  • - Results showed that while a higher percentage of DanEoE patients were on proton pump inhibitors before starting treatment, follow-up rates post-treatment were also more consistent in this group; however, histologic follow-up rates after treatment were similar between both cohorts.
  • - The authors concluded that there wasn't enough evidence to recommend treating EoE exclusively at specialized centers, pointing out issues with conflicting responses to treatment and the impact

We explored the dietary intake and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in 85 survivors of pediatric stem cell transplantation (median age 30 years, median follow-up time 20 years). Overall, the distribution of fatty acid deviated from the recommendations with a higher intake of saturated fat and a lower intake of unsaturated fat but was comparable to that of the background population. The prevalence of MetS was 27%, corresponding to that of the elderly background population.

We developed a synthesis strategy involving a diazo transfer reaction and subsequent click reaction to conjugate a murine cathelicidin-related antimicrobial peptide (CRAMP) to chitosan and hydroxypropyl chitosan (HPC), confirmed the structure, and investigated the antimicrobial activity. Chitosan azide and HPC-azide were prepared with a low degree of azidation by reacting the parent chitosan and HPC with imidazole sulfonyl azide hydrochloride. CRAMP carrying an N-terminal pentynoyl group was successfully grafted onto chitosan and HPC via copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) reaction.
