Smoking impairs molecular response, and reduces overall survival in patients with chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms: A retrospective cohort study.

The effects of smoking on the molecular response (MR) and overall survival (OS) in patients with chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) have not been investigated before. We analysed a historical cohort of 498 consecutive patients diagnosed with MPNs. Moreover, we analysed a subgroup of 270 consecutive patients with MPNs with > 1 measurement of the JAK2V617F variant allele frequency.

Use of tramadol and other analgesics following media attention and risk minimization actions from regulators: a Danish nationwide drug utilization study.

Purpose: To describe the use of tramadol and other analgesics in Denmark focusing on the impact of media attention (June and December 2017) and regulatory actions (September 2017 and January 2018) on the use of tramadol.

Methods: Using nationwide registries, we identified all adults who filled a prescription for tramadol and other analgesics from 2014 to 2019. We described incidence rates, prevalence proportions, and total use of tramadol and other analgesics over time.

Metformin decreases miR-122, miR-223 and miR-29a in women with polycystic ovary syndrome.

Metformin is associated with increased insulin sensitivity, whereas oral contraceptive pills (OCP) could increase the risk for type 2 diabetes (T2D) in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Certain miRNAs might serve as biomarkers for the risk of T2D. The aim of this study was to investigate changes in circulating miRNA levels during treatment with metformin and OCP in women with PCOS.

Background: The limb occlusion pressure (LOP) is determined to calculate the relative LOP. The different levels of relative LOP (percentage of LOP) influence the treatment effect and perceived discomfort during low-load blood flow restriction (BFR) strength training. Thus, determining the LOP is of the utmost importance when using BFR in clinical practice.

Principal-Component Analysis-Based Measures of PET Data Closely Reflect Neuropathologic Staging Schemes.

Voxel-based principal-component analysis allows for an identification of patterns of glucose metabolism and amyloid deposition related to the conversion from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to Alzheimer disease (AD). The present study aimed to validate these AD conversion-related patterns (ADCRPs) against neuropathologic findings. We included patients from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative who underwent autopsy and for whom F-FDG PET (30 AD, 6 MCI, 2 cognitively normal) and amyloid-β (Aβ) PET (17 AD, 3 MCI, 2 cognitively normal) were available.

Phenotypically Selective Genotyping Realizes More Genetic Gains in a Rainbow Trout Breeding Program in the Presence of Genotype-by-Environment Interactions.

Selective genotyping of phenotypically superior animals may lead to bias and less accurate genomic breeding values (GEBV). Performing selective genotyping based on phenotypes measured in the breeding environment (B) is not necessarily a good strategy when the aim of a breeding program is to improve animals' performance in the commercial environment (C). Our simulation study compared different genotyping strategies for selection candidates and for fish in C in a breeding program for rainbow trout in the presence of genotype-by-environment interactions when the program had limited genotyping resources and unregistered pedigrees of individuals.

Ruxolitinib and interferon-α2 combination therapy for patients with polycythemia vera or myelofibrosis: a phase II study.

We report the final 2-year end-of-study results from the first clinical trial investigating combination treatment with ruxolitinib and low-dose pegylated interferon-α2 (PEG-IFNα2). The study included 32 patients with polycythemia vera and 18 with primary or secondary myelofibrosis; 46 patients were previously intolerant of or refractory to PEGIFNα2. The primary outcome was efficacy, based on hematologic parameters, quality of life measurements, and JAK2 V617F allele burden.

[Osteoarthritis of the shoulder, the elbow and the acromioclavicular joint].

Osteoarthritis of the shoulder is common in elderly, and arthroplasty surgery is increasing in Denmark. This review summarises the current knowledge. Results are good, and revision rates are low at ten years.

Enrichment of mayonnaise with a high fat fish oil-in-water emulsion stabilized with modified DATEM C14 enhances oxidative stability.

Enrichment of mayonnaise using delivery emulsions (DEs) containing 70% fish oil versus neat fish oil was investigated. DEs were produced with combined use of sodium caseinate, diacetyl tartaric acid esters of mono- and diglycerides (DATEM), and/or modified DATEMs with different length (C12 or C14) and covalently attached caffeic acid. Physical and oxidative stability of the mayonnaises were analyzed based on parameters including droplet size, viscosity, peroxide value, volatile compounds, and sensory properties.

A Collaboration Among Primary Care-Based Clinical Pharmacists and Community-Based Health Coaches.

Background/objectives: Medication discrepancies and adverse drug events are common following hospital discharge. This study evaluates whether a collaboration between community-based health coaches and primary care-based pharmacists was associated with a reduction in inpatient utilization following hospitalization.

Wound healing is a complex biological process that is impaired under diabetes conditions. Chronic non-healing wounds in diabetes are some of the most expensive healthcare expenditures worldwide. Early diagnosis and efficacious treatment strategies are needed.

Background: The patient-centered medical home (PCMH) model aims to improve primary health care using a patient-centered approach. Little qualitative research has investigated how the PCMH model affects patient experience with care.

Objective: To understand Medicaid and Medicare patient and caregiver experiences with PCMHs participating in the Multi-Payer Advanced Primary Care Practice (MAPCP) Demonstration.

Chronic rhinosinusitis in COPD: A prevalent but unrecognized comorbidity impacting health related quality of life.

Introduction: Unified airway disease where upper respiratory tract inflammation including chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) affects lower airway disease is known from asthma, bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis and primary ciliary dyskinesia but little is known about CRS and health related quality of life in COPD. We investigate firstly, the prevalence of CRS in COPD. Secondly the impact of CRS on HRQoL.

Sex and age differences among tramadol users in three Nordic countries.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence and characteristics of tramadol users in Denmark, Norway and Sweden.

Methods: Data from the national prescription databases comprising the entire population of Denmark, Norway and Sweden between 2007 and 2015 were used to assess prescription medicine use and sold amount (in defined daily doses (DDDs)) of tramadol, other opioids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Results: From 2007 to 2015 the prevalence of tramadol users increased in Denmark from 45 to 52 per 1,000 residents, and in Norway from 20 to 41 per 1,000 residents.

A dynamic model for spread of livestock-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus on a pig farm, incorporating bacterial load and human exposure through air.

Livestock-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (LA-MRSA) is widely distributed in the pig population in many countries, where its presence is undesirable, because as an opportunistic human pathogen, it poses a threat to human health. At present, there is a lack of knowledge regarding successful methods for eradication of LA-MRSA on a pig farm, which does not involve emptying the farm and culling all pigs. Some studies have reported an association between levels of LA-MRSA in the barn air and LA-MRSA carriage among humans entering or working in the pig barns.

Attitude and Barriers in Palliative Care and Advance Care Planning in Nonmalignant Chronic Lung Disease: Results From a Danish National Survey.

Introduction: Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and interstitial lung disease have a significant burden of symptoms. Many are not offered palliative care (PC). Our aim was to investigate the attitudes to and barriers for PC among physicians.

Depression among men in ART treatment: a register-based national cohort study.

Study Question: Are male factor infertility or remaining childless risk factors for unipolar depression among men in assisted reproductive technology (ART) treatment?

Summary Answer: Male factor infertility was not associated with a significantly increased risk of unipolar depression and men remaining childless did not have a significantly increased risk of developing unipolar depression compared to men in ART treatment who became fathers.

What Is Known Already: Men in medically assisted reproduction due to male factor infertility are more distressed and have more negative emotions such as feelings of loss, stigma and low self-esteem compared to men in fertility treatment due to other infertility diagnosis. Stress is in general a risk factor for depression.

Effect of genomic selection and genotyping strategy on estimation of variance components in animal models using different relationship matrices.

Background: The traditional way to estimate variance components (VC) is based on the animal model using a pedigree-based relationship matrix (A) (A-AM). After genomic selection was introduced into breeding programs, it was anticipated that VC estimates from A-AM would be biased because the effect of selection based on genomic information is not captured. The single-step method (H-AM), which uses an H matrix as (co)variance matrix, can be used as an alternative to estimate VC.

The effects of B cell depletion on immune related adverse events associated with immune checkpoint inhibition.

This letter describes the potential effect of B cell depletion on immune related adverse events associated with immune checkpoint inhibition. B cell depleting agents such as rituximab reduce B cell to plasma cell differentiation and antibody production. This treatment strategy is used in several immune mediated inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and small vessel vasculitis.

Distinct expression patterns of TLR transcripts in human oocytes and granulosa cells from primordial and primary follicles.

Ovulation has long been regarded as a process resembling an inflammatory response. Previously, luteinizing hormone (LH) was shown to induce Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) and TLR4 in granulosa cells from preovulatory hormone-dependent follicles. However, whether this could already initiate before the hormone-dependent phase is currently unknown.

Controlling Coancestry and Thereby Future Inbreeding by Optimum-Contribution Selection Using Alternative Genomic-Relationship Matrices.

We tested the consequences of using alternative genomic relationship matrices to predict genomic breeding values (GEBVs) and control of coancestry in optimum contribution selection, where the relationship matrix used to calculate GEBVs was not necessarily the same as that used to control coancestry. A stochastic simulation study was carried out to investigate genetic gain and true genomic inbreeding in breeding schemes that applied genomic optimum contribution selection (GOCS) with different genomic relationship matrices. Three genomic-relationship matrices were used to predict the GEBVs based on three information sources: markers ( ), QTL ( ), and markers and QTL ( ).
