Background: In our metabolomics studies we have noticed that repeated NMR acquisition on the same sample can result in altered metabolite signal intensities.
Aims: To investigate the reproducibility of repeated NMR acquisition on selected metabolites in serum and plasma from two large human metabolomics studies.
Methods: Two peak regions for each metabolite were integrated and changes occurring after reacquisition were correlated.
Brachycephalic syndrome (BS) is a pathophysiological disorder caused by excessive soft tissue within the upper airways of short-nosed dog breeds, causing obstruction of the nasal, pharyngeal and laryngeal lumen, resulting in severe respiratory distress. As the prevalence of BS appears to be high among some of the affected breeds, there is an urgent need for breeding efforts to improve the health status of those dogs. In the present study, we evaluated correlations between morphometric and other phenotypic characteristics and BS in a population of 69 French bulldogs from Denmark to identify parameters that could serve as a basis for breeding against BS.

We performed high-sensitivity mass-spectrometry-based proteomics on the cell media of human adipocytes derived from the supraclavicular brown adipose and from the subcutaneous white adipose depots of adult humans. During the period, there was a low and decreasing intake of dogs, while the annual proportion of euthanised dogs increased from 6% to 10%. The number of cats entering shelters increased by about 250%, while the annual proportion of euthanised cats increased from 15% to about 29%.

We used a range of published estimates of the duration of the hosts' infectious period and equations for the relationship between temperature and four key transmission parameters: extrinsic incubation period, daily vector survival rate, daily vector biting rate and host-to-vector transmission rate resulting in 147,456 combinations of daily IBs. More than 82% combinations of the parameter values predicted > 1 IBs per host.

Ki67 is a nuclear protein expressed during the active phases of the cell cycle, which makes it a biomarker of cell proliferation. In clinical pathology settings, immunohistochemical (IHC) detection of Ki67 is used to calculate Ki67 proliferation indices (PIs), which have prognostic information and are used to subdivide breast carcinomas and neuroendocrine neoplasias. Calculation of Ki67 PIs is notoriously hard and prone to intraobserver and interobserver variance.

Single-cell sequencing technologies have revealed an unexpectedly broad repertoire of cells required to mediate complex functions in multicellular organisms. Despite the multiple roles of adipose tissue in maintaining systemic metabolic homeostasis, adipocytes are thought to be largely homogenous with only 2 major subtypes recognized in humans so far. A cross-sectional study was carried out to estimate the animal- and herd-level prevalence of bovine herpesvirus 1 (BoHV-1) infection in cattle in the State of Paraíba, and to identify risk factors associated with herd-level infection. The state was divided into three sampling strata, and for each stratum, the prevalence of herds infected with BoHV-1 was estimated through a two-stage sampling survey carried out from September 2012 to January 2013. SLBs provide a widely accepted and versatile model system which mimics the natural cell membrane separating the extracellular and intracellular fluids of the living cell.
