Article Synopsis
  • Changing temperatures can disrupt food webs, and understanding these effects requires examining how temperature impacts specific interactions between species.
  • A study focused on two resource species and one consumer species measured energy gain and loss to determine thermal mismatches that affect species interactions.
  • Findings showed that while warming enhanced energy balance for resources, it decreased it for consumers; different patterns of interaction strength and thermal responses were observed in the consumer-resource pairs.

The 21st century has seen an acceleration of anthropogenic climate change and biodiversity loss, with both stressors deemed to affect ecosystem functioning. However, we know little about the interactive effects of both stressors and in particular about the interaction of increased climatic variability and biodiversity loss on ecosystem functioning. This should be remedied because larger climatic variability is one of the main features of climate change.
