Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to develop an Airway Quality Improvement Program (AQIP) to enhance care for patients with artificial airways like endotracheal tubes and tracheostomies.
  • After implementing AQIP, there was an 8.4% decrease in airway emergencies and a significant reduction in patient hospital stays, indicating improved care outcomes.
  • Staff education led to increased comfort levels and knowledge of airway management, with recognition of tracheostomy versus laryngectomy improving notably.

Laser thermal ablation (LTA) is an increasingly common procedure to treat benign and malignant thyroid nodules, allowing patients to avoid thyroidectomy. There are few reported postprocedural complications of LTA among patients with benign thyroid nodules. While vocal fold paralysis is a well-known potential complication after thyroidectomy, we present the first case report of vocal fold paralysis following LTA.

Importance: Oral and oropharyngeal cancer have low survival rates, and incidence continues to increase.

Objective: To determine whether soluble CD44 and total protein (TP) are useful for monitoring head and neck cancer recurrence, either used in a point-of-care (POC) test or as individual laboratory-based biomarkers.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This multi-institutional nonrandomized clinical trial testing a novel diagnostic/screening assay took place across the University of California, San Diego; Johns Hopkins University; the Greater Baltimore Medical Center; New York University; and the San Diego Veterans Affairs Hospital.

Background: There are 54,000 new cases of oral cavity and oropharyngeal cancer in the United States and more than 476,000 worldwide each year. Oral cavity and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma make up most tumors with five-year survival rates of 50% due to prevalence of late-stage diagnoses. Improved methods of early detection in high-risk individuals are urgently needed.

The authors examined risk factors among pediatric head and neck dog bite patients and which factors are associated with admission to inform prevention efforts. All patients who suffered head and neck dog bites from 2013-2022 in the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) database were reviewed.

Background: The radial forearm free flap (RFFF) is considered a workhorse for head and neck cancer reconstructive surgery due to its generally consistent anatomy, pliability, long pedicle, and accessible harvest location.

Methods: A 63-year-old male with trisomy 21 and recurrent midface basal cell carcinoma presented for surgical management. The patient underwent tumor resection including left infrastructure maxillectomy with ipsilateral rhinectomy.
