The study investigated the osteogenic capacity of a prefabricated periosteal flap created using only skeletonized pedicle transfer without fascia or muscle for vascular induction in rabbit calvarium. A critical-sized bone defect was made in the parietal bone centered on the sagittal suture, and the demineralized bone matrix was implanted. The periosteofascia over the defect was used as a form of prefabricated periosteofascial flap (PPF group, N=10), conventional periosteofascial flap (CPF group, N=10), and nonvascularized free periosteofascial graft (FPG group, N=6).

The protective effects of freeze-dried privet (Ligustrum obtusifolium) fruits (PFs) were observed in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats on a high fat diet by measuring levels of blood glucose, serum insulin, fructosamine, and hepatic reactive oxygen species generating and scavenging enzyme activities. A PF-supplemented diet was prepared by mixing an AIN-76 diet with powdered PF (final concentration, 1% or 2%). It was fed to STZ-induced diabetic rats on a high fat diet for 6 weeks.

The antihyperglycemic effect of a water extract (WE) and an alkali extract (AE) of the Fomitopsis pinicola fruit body was studied in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. The STZ-induced diabetes mellitus (DM) control group lost a significant amount of body weight, whereas the normal control group (NC) gained weight; however, the DM-AE group gained a significant amount of weight, with weight gain approaching normal. Feed intake by the DM-AE group was also similar to the NC group.

In this study, a 40% ethanol extract of Chinese yam flour (Dioscoreae rhizoma), containing 177 +/- 58 microg/mL of dioscin, was tested in order to evaluate its pharmacological effects on the gastrointestinal tracts of Sprague-Dawley rats. Via the ingestion of the Chinese yam extract, the secretion of gastric acid was suppressed in the rats, and gastrointestinal motility increased by as much as 10%. The fecal quantity of rats fed on the Chinese yam extract also increased, by more than 40% as compared with that of the controls.
