Dinucleases of the DEDD superfamily, such as oligoribonuclease, Rexo2 and nanoRNase C, catalyze the essential final step of RNA degradation, the conversion of di- to mononucleotides. The active sites of these enzymes are optimized for substrates that are two nucleotides long, and do not discriminate between RNA and DNA. Here, we identified a novel DEDD subfamily, members of which function as dedicated deoxydinucleases (diDNases) that specifically hydrolyze single-stranded DNA dinucleotides in a sequence-independent manner.

Background: Baraitser-Winter syndrome (BWS) is rare, and no previous reports have described the visual course of patients with this condition. Herein, we report the long-term visual outcomes and ocular features of a 6-year-old patient diagnosed with BWS.

Case Presentation: A 6-year-old female patient visited our clinic complaining of low vision.

RNA degradation is a central process required for transcriptional regulation. Eventually, this process degrades diribonucleotides into mononucleotides by specific diribonucleases. In Escherichia coli, oligoribonuclease (Orn) serves this function and is unique as the only essential exoribonuclease.

Background And Purpose: Giant-cell arteritis (GCA) is the most common type of vasculitis in the elderly and is associated with high risks of visual loss and recurrence. Owing to its rarity in Asian populations, the current clinical interventions for these patients are not well known. Here we aimed to characterize the current management status of patients with GCA using Korean multicenter data.

Purpose: To determine subjective symptoms and medical history of patients with intermittent exotropia in a large study population.

Methods: The Korean Intermittent Exotropia Multicenter Study (KIEMS) is a nationwide, observational, cross-sectional, multicenter study conducted by the Korean Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus including 5,385 patients with intermittent exotropia. Subjective symptoms and medical history of patients with intermittent exotropia were extracted by a comprehensive survey based on a self-administered questionnaire according to the study protocol of the KIEMS.

Background And Purpose: Patients with cluster headache (CH) exhibit impaired health-related quality of life (HRQoL). However, there have been few studies related to the HRQoL of patients with CH from Asian backgrounds. This study aimed to determine the impact of CH on HRQoL and to identify the factors affecting HRQoL in patients with CH during cluster periods.

Background: Only limited data are available regarding the treatment status and response to cluster headache in an Asian population. Therefore, this study aimed to provide a real-world treatment pattern of cluster headache and the response rate of each treatment in an Asian population.

Methods: Patients with cluster headache were recruited between September 2016 and January 2019 from 16 hospitals in Korea.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study evaluated real-world data from 389 DLBCL patients across Europe, focusing on clinical effectiveness and safety outcomes over 30 months.
  • * Key findings revealed high survival rates (86% at 12 months) and a significant proportion of patients (82%) achieving a complete response to CT-P10, with adverse events aligning with typical chemotherapy effects, indicating its potential as a viable treatment option for DLBCL.

The risk of chromosomal abnormalities in the child increases with increasing maternal age. Although non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) is a safe and effective prenatal screening method, the accuracy of the test results needs to be improved owing to various testing conditions. We attempted to achieve a more accurate and robust prediction of chromosomal abnormalities by combining multiple methods.

In this study, furan analysis was conducted on dried red pepper powder treated by three cooking methods (boiling, roasting, and frying). A total of 144 samples were prepared and their furan levels were analysed using automated solid-phase micro-extraction gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The furan concentration in boiled soup ranged from 1.

In rod-shaped bacteria, morphological plasticity occurs in response to stress, which blocks cell division to promote filamentation. We demonstrate here that overexpression of the patatin-like phospholipase variant CapV, but not CapV, causes pronounced sulA-independent pyridoxine-inhibited cell filamentation in the Escherichia coli K-12-derivative MG1655 associated with restriction of flagella production and swimming motility. Conserved amino acids in canonical patatin-like phospholipase A motifs, but not the nucleophilic serine, are required to mediate CapV phenotypes.

Binding of ligands to macromolecules changes their physicochemical and enzymatic characteristics. Cyclic di-GMP is a second messenger involved in motility/sessility and acute/chronic infection life style transition. Although the GGDEF domain, predominantly a diguanylate cyclase, represents one of the most abundant bacterial domain superfamilies, the number of cyclic di-GMP receptors falls short.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the delay in diagnosing cluster headaches (CH), a severe one-sided headache disorder, analyzing data from 445 patients over four years.
  • Results show an average diagnostic delay of 5.7 years, with younger patients more likely to experience longer delays and those diagnosed before certain headache classification publications facing greater delays.
  • Factors such as age of onset and psychiatric evaluation scores are associated with diagnostic delays, and patients with longer delays report higher rates of suicidal thoughts.

Rapid infusion (RI) of the rituximab biosimilar CT-P10 is currently only an approved treatment regimen for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Although both CT-P10 and reference rituximab are known to be frequently administered using a RI regimen (≤90 min) in clinical practice, published data on the safety of RI of CT-P10 in patients with NHL and CLL are limited. Hence, this study collected real-world safety and effectiveness data on RI-CT-P10 from the medical records of 196 patients with NHL or CLL in 10 European centers, 6 months after the date of the first RI (index date); the infusion-related reaction (IRR) rate was compared to previously published data.

Anthranilate is a diffusible molecule produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and accumulates as P. aeruginosa grows. Anthranilate is an important intermediate for the synthesis of tryptophan and the Pseudomonas quinolone signal (PQS), as well as metabolized by the anthranilate dioxygenase complex ( operon products).

CT-P13 is an infliximab biosimilar approved for indications including ankylosing spondylitis (AS); the approved maintenance regimen is 5 mg/kg infused every 6-8 weeks. In clinical practice, modifications to infliximab dose and/or infusion interval can be beneficial to the patient. For CT-P13, real-world data on dose and/or interval adjustment are lacking.

RNA degradation is fundamental for cellular homeostasis. The process is carried out by various classes of endolytic and exolytic enzymes that together degrade an RNA polymer to mono-ribonucleotides. Within the exoribonucleases, nano-RNases play a unique role as they act on the smallest breakdown products and hence catalyze the final steps in the process.

is a Gram-negative opportunistic pathogen that is frequently found in the airways of cystic fibrosis (CF) patients due to the dehydrated mucus that collapses the underlying cilia and prevents mucociliary clearance. During this life-long chronic infection, cell accumulates mutations that lead to inactivation of the gene that results in the constitutive expression of operon and the production of alginate exopolysaccharide. The viscous alginate polysaccharide further occludes the airways of CF patients and serves as a protective matrix to shield from host immune cells and antibiotic therapy.
