Following mass vaccinations for the control of the COVID-19 epidemic, a spectrum of cardiac and neurological disorders was reported among vaccinated individuals. This study examined the range of complications documented and factors related to their occurrence. Three electronic databases were searched for case reports and case series with descriptions of cardiac and/or neurological complications in COVID-19 vaccine recipients.

COVID-19 Vaccine Booster Hesitancy among the Elderly in Malaysian Residential Care Homes: A Cross-Sectional Study in Klang Valley.

The elderly are considered a high-risk group for severe outcomes and death from COVID-19 infection. Anxiety and coping strategies during the COVID-19 pandemic: A cross-sectional study of staff and students from a tertiary education center in Malaysia.

Aim: We examined the anxiety levels and coping strategies among staff and students of a tertiary educational institution during the COVID-19 pandemic and determined the association between anxiety level and coping strategies.

Method: Through an online survey, we used Coronavirus Anxiety Scale (CAS) to measure the level of anxiety associated with the COVID-19 crisis and Brief Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced (COPE) to assess the coping responses adopted to handle stressful life events. Coping strategies were classified as adaptive and maladaptive, for which the aggregate sores were calculated.

Knowledge, Perceptions and Behaviors Related to COVID-19 in a University Setting in Malaysia.

Background: In Malaysia the COVID-19 disease (COVID-19) has continued to escalate since its first detection in late January 2020, despite widespread implementation of control measures. This study aims to determine the knowledge, perception and behaviors with respect to COVID-19 in the midst of the third wave of the infection.

Risk Factors Associated with Sarcopenia Among Independently Mobile, Institutionalised Older People in the Klang Valley of Malaysia: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background: Studies on sarcopenia among Malaysian older people (OP ≥ 60 years of age) living in the community but not in long-term care (LTC) homes have been reported previously. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of sarcopenia and its risk factors in OP in Malaysian LTC homes.

Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted with 202 independently mobile OP (males 32%) in seven LTC homes in the Klang Valley of Malaysia.

Tigecycline resistance may be associated with dysregulated response to stress in Mycobacterium abscessus.

Previously, we characterized 7C, a laboratory-derived tigecycline-resistant mutant of Mycobacterium abscessus ATCC 19977, and found that the resistance was conferred by a mutation in MAB_3542c, which encodes an RshA-like protein. In M. tuberculosis, RshA is an anti-sigma factor that negatively regulates the SigH-dependent heat/oxidative stress response.

A mutation in anti-sigma factor MAB_3542c may be responsible for tigecycline resistance in Mycobacterium abscessus.

In this study, we characterized 7C, a spontaneous mutant selected from tigecycline-susceptible Mycobacterium abscessus ATCC 19977. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) was used to identify possible resistance determinants in this mutant. Compared to the wild-type, 7C demonstrated resistance to tigecycline as well as cross-resistance to imipenem, and had a slightly retarded growth rate.

Risk factors associated with abdominal obesity in suburban adolescents from a Malaysian district.

Introduction: We aimed to determine the risk factors associated with abdominal obesity (AO) in suburban adolescents.

Methods: This cross-sectional study included adolescents aged 15-17 years from five randomly selected secondary schools in the Hulu Langat district of Selangor state, Malaysia. Waist circumference (WC) was measured at the midpoint between the lower margin of the last palpable rib and the top of the iliac crest.

Salinomycin, a polyether ionophoric antibiotic, inhibits adipogenesis.

The polyether ionophoric antibiotics including monensin, salinomycin, and narasin, are widely used in veterinary medicine and as food additives and growth promoters in animal husbandry including poultry farming. Their effects on human health, however, are not fully understood. Recent studies showed that salinomycin is a cancer stem cell inhibitor.

Combined use of wild-type HBV precore and high serum iron marker as a potential tool for the prediction of cirrhosis in chronic hepatitis B infection.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and high liver iron deposits have both been associated with the development of cirrhosis. Among HBV factors, genotype and mutations in the basal core promoter (BCP) and precore regions have been most frequently studied but the evidence for a positive association with cirrhosis has been inconsistent. In this study, sera from persons with chronic HBV infection with and without cirrhosis were used for whole HBV genome analysis and for the estimation of serum iron marker (serum iron or ferritin) levels.

Evaluation of PCR-RFLP analysis targeting hsp65 and rpoB genes for the typing of mycobacterial isolates in Malaysia.

In this study, PCR-RFLP analysis (PRA) targeting hsp65 and rpoB gene regions was evaluated for the identification of mycobacterial species isolated from Malaysian patients. Overall, the hsp65 PRA identified 92.2 % of 90 isolates compared to 85.

Comparing measured total carbon dioxide and calculated bicarbonate.

Introduction: The objective of the study is to determine the level of agreement between measured total carbon dioxide (TCO2) and calculated bicarbonate (HCO3-) in our laboratory.

Materials And Methods: TCO2 and HCO3- values of 1820 samples drawn at the same time from the patient were compared. TCO2 from venous samples was measured on Dimension RxL while HCO3- was obtained from arterial blood gas samples analyzed on Radiometer ABL 700.

Molecular characterisation and frequency of Ggamma Xmn I polymorphism in Chinese and Malay beta-thalassaemia patients in Malaysia.

The molecular basis of variable phenotypes in P-thalassaemia patients with identical genotypes has been associated with co-inheritance of alpha-thalassaemia and persistence of HbF production in adult life. The Xmn I restriction site at -158 position of the Ggamma-gene is associated with increased expression of the Ggamma-globin gene and higher production of HbF This study aims to determine the frequency of the digammaferent genotypes of the Ggamma Xmn I polymorphism in P-thalassaemia patients in two ethnic groups in Malaysia. Molecular characterisation and frequency of the Ggamma Xmn I polymorphism were studied in fifty-eight Chinese and forty-nine beta-thalassaemia Malay patients by Xmn I digestion after DNA amplification of a 650 bp sequence.

alpha1-Antitrypsin deficiency is not an important cause of childhood liver diseases in a multi-ethnic Southeast Asian population.

Aim: We conducted a prospective study to determine the role of alpha1-antitrypsin (alpha1AT) deficiency in the pathogenesis of neonatal cholestasis and other childhood liver diseases in a multi-ethnic Southeast Asian population.

Methods: Prospective patients with neonatal cholestasis (group 1), other liver diseases (group 2) and children with other medical conditions (group 3) referred to the Paediatric Unit, University of Malaya Medical Centre, Malaysia, from May 2002 to June 2005, were screened for alpha1AT level and phenotype. alpha1AT level below 80 mg/dL was considered as low.

Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis: a report of 3 Malaysian cases and a review of its pathology.

Unlabelled: Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis (TPP) is a medical emergency characterised by sudden onset of muscle weakness with hypokalemia that resolves with the treatment of hyperthyroidism. We report three cases of thyrotoxic periodic paralysis seen at the Accident and Emergency Care Department, University of Malaya Medical Centre in a period of four months. We also review the clinical presentation, pathophysiology, biochemical features and management of TPP.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex genetic diversity: mining the fourth international spoligotyping database (SpolDB4) for classification, population genetics and epidemiology.

Background: The Direct Repeat locus of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTC) is a member of the CRISPR (Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats) sequences family. Spoligotyping is the widely used PCR-based reverse-hybridization blotting technique that assays the genetic diversity of this locus and is useful both for clinical laboratory, molecular epidemiology, evolutionary and population genetics. It is easy, robust, cheap, and produces highly diverse portable numerical results, as the result of the combination of (1) Unique Events Polymorphism (UEP) (2) Insertion-Sequence-mediated genetic recombination.

Heterogeneity in alpha-thalassemia interactions in Malays, Chinese and Indians in Malaysia.

Aim: Interactions between different determinants of alpha-thalassemia raises considerable problems, particularly during pregnancies where antenatal diagnosis is necessary. This study aims to determine the different types of deletional alpha-thalassemia and Hemoglobin Constant Spring (HbCS), and their frequency in Malays, Chinese and Indians in Malaysia.

Methods: DNA from 650 pregnant women from the Antenatal Clinic of the University of Malaya Medical Center in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia who showed mean cell volume < or =89 fL and/or mean cell hemoglobin < or =28 pg were analyzed for the double alpha-globin gene South-East Asian deletion (--SEA), the -alpha3.

The diagnostic usefulness of tumour markers CEA and CA-125 in pleural effusion.

Pleural effusion is a common diagnostic problem. The analysis of serum and pleural fluid for tumour markers is widely used as a diagnostic aid in clinical practice. The aim of the present study was to determine the usefulness of simultaneous quantification of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and carbohydrate antigen (CA-125) in distinction of malignant from benign effusion.
