Sex disparities in mortality among patients with kidney failure receiving dialysis.

Females are known to have a better survival rate than males in the general population, but previous studies have shown that this superior survival is diminished in patients on dialysis. This study aimed to investigate the risk of mortality in relation to sex among Korean patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD) or peritoneal dialysis (PD). A total of 4994 patients with kidney failure who were receiving dialysis were included for a prospective nationwide cohort study.

Treatment of rituximab in patients with idiopathic membranous nephropathy: a case series and literature review.

Background/aims: Membranous nephropathy (MN) is a major cause of nephrotic syndrome in adults. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of rituximab (RTX) in patients with idiopathic MN (iMN) who have a high risk of progression.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed data of 13 patients with iMN, who received RTX treatments from January 2014 to July 2020.

Superiority of Simplified Acute Physiologic Score II Compared with Acute Physiologic and Chronic Health Evaluation II and Sequential Organ Failure Assessment Scores for Predicting 48-Hour Mortality in Patients Receiving Continuous Kidney Replacement Therapy.

Background: Predicting early mortality is important in patients undergoing continuous kidney replacement therapy (CKRT), especially in the first 48 h. This study aimed to determine the predictive performance of the Simplified Acute Physiologic Score (SAPS) II, the Acute Physiologic and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) II, and the Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) scores for early mortality in patients receiving CKRT.

Methods: Data from patients with acute kidney injury receiving CKRT were consecutively and retrospectively obtained at a tertiary medical center between August 2017 and March 2021.

Higher Serum Total Cholesterol to High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol Ratio Is Associated with Increased Mortality among Incident Peritoneal Dialysis Patients.

This study evaluated the association of the serum total cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (TC/HDL-C) with mortality in incident peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. We performed a multi-center, prospective cohort study of 630 incident PD patients from 2008 to 2015 in Korea. Participants were stratified into quintiles according to baseline TC, HDL-C, LDL-C and TC/HDL-C.

Paricalcitol Improves Hypoxia-Induced and TGF-β1-Induced Injury in Kidney Pericytes.

Recently, the role of kidney pericytes in kidney fibrosis has been investigated. This study aims to evaluate the effect of paricalcitol on hypoxia-induced and TGF-β1-induced injury in kidney pericytes. The primary cultured pericytes were pretreated with paricalcitol (20 ng/mL) for 90 min before inducing injury, and then they were exposed to TGF-β1 (5 ng/mL) or hypoxia (1% O and 5% CO).

Adverse impact of renin-angiotensin system blockade on the clinical course in hospitalized patients with severe COVID-19: a retrospective cohort study.

The association between angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACE-I) or angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) and the risk of mortality in hospitalized patients with severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was investigated. This retrospective cohort study was performed in all hospitalized patients with COVID-19 in tertiary hospitals in Daegu, Korea. Patients were classified based on whether they received ACE-I or ARB before COVID-19 diagnosis.
