Assisted reproduction technology (ART) procedures are often impacted by post-ovulatory aging (POA), which can lead to reduced fertilization rates and impaired embryo development. This study used RNA sequencing analysis and experimental validation to study the similarities and differences between in vivo- and vitro-matured porcine oocytes before and after POA. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between fresh in vivo-matured oocyte (F_vivo) and aged in vivo-matured oocyte (A_vivo) and DEGs between fresh in vitro-matured oocyte (F_vitro) and aged in vitro-matured oocyte (A_vitro) were intersected to explore the co-effects of POA.

Background: The study evaluated the effects of bacteriophage cocktail (BP) and ZnO administered during weaning time for piglets exposed to a non-sanitary environment. The bacteriophages were designed to eliminate Escherichia coli (K88, K99 and F41), Salmonella (typhimurium and enteritidis), and Clostridium perfreingens (types A and C). Forty 21-day-old crossbreed piglets were assigned to four treatments, including the PC (sanitary environment), NC (non-sanitary environment), BP (NC plus 10 pfu/kg BP), and ZO (NC plus 2,500 mg/kg ZnO).

Pig breeding management directly contributes to the profitability of pig farms, and pregnancy diagnosis is an important factor in breeding management. Therefore, the need to diagnose pregnancy in sows is emphasized, and various studies have been conducted in this area. We propose a computer-aided diagnosis system to assist livestock farmers to diagnose sow pregnancy through ultrasound.

Average daily gain (ADG) is an important growth trait in the pig industry. The direct genetic effect (DGE) has been studied mainly to assess the association between genetic information and economic traits. The social genetic effect (SGE) has been shown to affect ADG simultaneously with the DGE because of group housing systems.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of multiple cooling systems and different drinking water temperatures (DWT) on the performance of sows and their hair cortisol levels during heat stress. In this study, the effect of four different cooling systems: air conditioner (AC), cooling pad (CP), snout cooling (SC), and mist spray (MS), and two DWT, namely low water temperature (LWT) and high water temperature (HWT) on 48 multiparous sows (Landrace × Yorkshire; 242.84 ± 2.

Mycotoxin contamination in pig feeds has a negative impact on growth performance, the immune system, and major body organs. Arginine (Arg) plays an important role in animals' body biochemistry and physiology. This study aimed to determine the effect of dietary Arg supplementation on mitigating the negative effects of mycotoxins in growing pigs.

Article Synopsis
  • A new synthetic pig breed called Woori-Heukdon (WRH) was created by crossing Korean native pigs and Korean Durocs over multiple generations, leading to the analysis of 2,074 pigs using a genome-wide approach.
  • Genetic studies revealed that the WRH population has distinct characteristics influenced by its parental breeds, and principal component analysis indicated the introduction of a new breeding group.
  • The analysis showed varying levels of genetic diversity and inbreeding among the different populations, with WRH displaying moderate inbreeding levels and revealing potential genes linked to important traits like adaptation and meat quality.

Feeding is the most important behavior that represents the health and welfare of weanling pigs. The early detection of feed refusal is crucial for the control of disease in the initial stages and the detection of empty feeders for adding feed in a timely manner. This paper proposes a real-time technique for the detection and recognition of small pigs using a deep-leaning-based method.

Closely correlated expression patterns between ubiquitin specific peptidase 9X-linked (USP9X) and adherens junction formation factor (Afadin) in mouse testis development suggests that Usp9x regulates the deubiquitination of Af-6 (also known as Afadin, AFDN), and subsequently, the cell adhesion dynamics during gametogenesis. However, this relationship has not yet been tested in other domestic animals. The study was examined the temporal and spatial expression patterns of porcine USP9X and AFDN from the pre-pubertal to adult stages using real time-PCR and immunohistochemistry.

Background: Woori-Heukdon (KWH) is a Korean synthetic pig breed generated using Chookjin-Duroc (KCD), Chookjin-Chamdon (KCC), and their crossbreds. Currently, there is a severe lack of studies investigating the Korean breed populations including wild boars (KWB) throughout the genome.

Objective: This study was performed to investigate the genetic characteristics of Korean pig populations at the genome-wide level.

Typhoid is a distinct gastrointestinal disease that largely affects the public by consumption of inadequately or partially cooked eggs from contaminated laying hen farms. This has led the research on laying hens to focus on controlling the contamination by an effective anti-Salmonella spp. agent in the intestine.

Genomic evaluation has been widely applied to several species using commercial single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyping platforms. This study investigated the informative genomic regions and the efficiency of genomic prediction by using two Bayesian approaches (BayesB and BayesC) under two moderate-density SNP genotyping panels in Korean Duroc pigs. Growth and production records of 1026 individuals were genotyped using two medium-density, SNP genotyping platforms: Illumina60K and GeneSeek80K.

A synthetic progestin altrenogest (ALT) is used to synchronize the estrus cycle of swine for fixed-time artificial insemination (AI) and has been shown to improve follicular development and reproductive performances in post-weaning sows. However, the effects of ALT treatment on reproductive tracts, including the ovaries, oviducts and uterus have not been yet clarified. In this study, we examined the expression of genes involved in endometrial responses in ALT-treated sows.

It has been well established that interleukin 6 (IL6), a pleiotropic cytokine with multiple functional roles, is widely expressed in the female reproductive tract and mediates blastocyst implantation and placental development in many species. Uterine expression of IL6 during early pregnancy has been studied in pigs, but expression and function of IL6 at the maternal-placental interface throughout pregnancy have not been determined. Thus, we examined expression of IL6 and its receptors, IL6 receptor (IL6R) and GP130, in the uterine endometrium on Days 12 and 15 of the estrous cycle, and Days 12, 15, 30, 60, 90, and 114 of pregnancy, conceptus on Days 12 and 15, and chorioallantoic tissues on Days 30, 60, 90, and 114 of pregnancy in pigs.

This study aimed to verify genetic relationships between fatty acid composition (FAC) and genotypes of several genes (FABP3, HMGA1, MC4R, IGF2, and FABP4) using pig breeds. The effects of genetic variations on FAC of the longissimus muscle were statistically significant with additive and dominance effects. The polymorphisms of FABP3 and IGF2 had the largest effects on stearic (C18:0, P=0.
