Four sesquiterpene glucosides were isolated from Ixeris sonchifolia Hance. The structure of a new compound (1) was assigned as 9beta-monohydroxy-2,12-dioxo-guaia-3,11(13)-dien-1alpha,5alpha,6beta,7alpha,9beta,10alphaH-12,6-olide-9-O-beta-D- glucopyranoside (ixerinoside). In addition, unambiguous and complete assignments of (1)H NMR chemical shifts for crepidiaside A (2), ixerin Z (3), and 11,13alpha-dihydroixerin Z (4) are presented.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAmyloid beta protein (Abeta)-induced free radical-mediated neurotoxicity is known as a leading hypothesis for a cause of Alzheimer's disease. Abeta increased free radical production and lipid peroxidation in PC12 nerve cells, resulting in apoptosis and cell death. The protective effect of naringenin, a major flavanone constituent isolated from Citrus junos, against Abeta-induced neurotoxicity was investigated using PC12 cells.

Purpose: To evaluate the forward shift of the posterior corneal surface after myopic laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) relative to the residual stromal bed thickness and the ablation percentage of the total corneal thickness.
Setting: Department of Ophthalmology, Ilsan Paik Hospital, Inje University, Ilsan, Korea.
Methods: Three hundred sixty-three eyes of 182 consecutive patients who had LASIK were examined retrospectively.

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of a capsular tension ring (CTR) on the tilting and decentration of intraocular lenses (IOLs) after cataract surgery.
Setting: Department of Ophthalmology, Ilsan Paik Hospital, Inje University, Kyunggyi-do, Korea.
Methods: Cataract surgery was performed in both eyes of 20 patients ranging in age from 57 to 75 years.
Purpose: To evaluate the usefulness of the compensatory function of Orbscan II (Orbtek, Bausch & Lomb) for measuring postoperative intraoperative pressure (IOP) in laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) patients.
Setting: Department of Ophthalmology, Ilsan Paik Hospital, Inje University, Ilsan, Korea.
Methods: Two hundred ten patients had LASIK using the Hansatome microkeratome (Bausch & Lomb) and the MEL 70 G-scan laser (Aesclepion-Meditec) and were examined retrospectively.

A 26-year-old woman with irregular astigmatism caused by ocular perforation became aphakic in the injured left eye 2 years after the initial trauma. The initial corneoscleral wound repair was performed without intraocular lens implantation. The patient's uncorrected visual acuity in the right eye was 20/20 and in the left eye, counting fingers at 50 cm.
