Introduction: Sequential compression devices (SCDs) are the mainstay of mechanical prophylaxis for venous thromboembolism in perioperative neurosurgical patients and are especially crucial when chemical prophylaxis is contraindicated.

Objective: The objective of this study was to determine risk factors predictive of external ventricular drain (EVD)-related hemorrhage and the association of such hemorrhages with mortality, discharge disposition, length of stay (LOS), and total cost.

Methods: After Institutional Review Board approval, data was collected retrospectively for adult patients requiring EVD placement from 2015 to 2018 at the authors' institution. Collected data included demographic patient information, peri-procedural factors, and relevant post-procedural measures.

Background: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have shown growing promise in the treatment of brain metastases, especially combined with stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). The combination of ICIs with SRS has been studied for efficacy as well as increasing radiation necrosis risks. In this review, we compare clinical outcomes of radiation necrosis, intracranial control, and overall survival between patients with brain metastases treated with either SRS alone or SRS-ICI combination therapy.

Observations: A 67-year-old male suffering occipital headache, nausea, and gait disturbance was found to have a large, avidly contrast-enhancing cerebellopontine angle mass extending into the cervical spinal canal with associated mass effect on medulla, cerebellum, fourth ventricle, and cervical spinal cord. This mass was not present on the imaging from 8 years prior.

Slow-release delivery enhances the pharmacological properties of oral 5-hydroxytryptophan: mouse proof-of-concept.

But native 5-HTP immediate release (IR) is poorly druggable, as rapid absorption causes rapid onset of adverse events, and rapid elimination causes fluctuating exposure. Recently, we reported that 5-HTP delivered as slow-release (SR) in mice augmented the brain pro-serotonergic effect of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), without the usual adverse events associated with 5-HTP IR.
