Introduction: Individual preparedness for large-scale earthquakes is essential for safety and security in Japan, where earthquakes frequently occur. Foreign residents in Japan face barriers to gathering disaster information, and international students are likely to be more vulnerable to the effects of earthquakes due to the shorter duration of their stay in Japan. However, no studies have been conducted on international students' individual preparedness for large-scale earthquakes in Japan.

A survey of the whole-genome sequence revealed 49 putative genes encoding polypeptides that are thought to be related to chitin degradation. Based on an analysis of the relative quantity of each transcript and an assay for chitin-degrading activity of recombinant proteins, a chitin degradation system driven by 19 chitinolytic enzymes was proposed.

We included patients with COVID-19 diagnosed by polymerase chain reaction tests during Japan's alpha and delta variant epidemics. COVID-19 symptoms at approximately 4 weeks were compared based on COVID-19 vaccination status.

Background: Promoting evidence-based practice (EBP) among nurses may be a valuable component of improving health care. However, a comprehensive analysis of the factors associated with the knowledge and skill EBP in nurses has not been performed to date. This is essential for facilitating the acquisition of relevant knowledge and skills to effectively implement EBP.

The objective of this study is to assess the association of basal bilirubin levels with progressive renal decline (PRD) and end-stage kidney disease (ESKD).
Methods: A total of 298 patients with diabetes who visited Kyushu University Hospital (Japan) were recruited and followed up for 10 years.
We assessed the relationship between health literacy and participation in health checkups among middle-aged Japanese community residents. Additionally, we explored the health information sources related to participation in health checkups among those with low, medium, and high health literacy. This mail survey using a self-administered questionnaire was conducted in 2020 and included 33,902 community residents with National Health Insurance (NHI), aged 40-64 years from five cities in Osaka Prefecture, Japan.

This study explored associations between recommendations from public health nurses, medical professionals, and family members and participation in specific health checkups among middle-aged Japanese community residents with NHI.
Methods: This mail survey was conducted in 2020, and it included 33,902 community residents with NHI aged 40-64 years from five cities in Osaka Prefecture, Japan.
Aim: This study aimed to explore the work-related factors related to forgetting to take oral diabetes medication during the working day among Japanese employees with diabetes.
Methods: This worksite-based study was designed to clarify the important work-related factors for preventing the aggravation of diabetes among working-age people and support for coexisting diabetes treatment and work (Ryoritsu Shien). This cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2018.
Aims/introduction: Diabetes mellitus is a major risk factor for the development of cardiovascular diseases. Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction is characterized by left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD). It has been reported that excess cortisol found in patients with Cushing's syndrome was associated with the development of LVDD.

Although abdominal obesity is an important driver of early microvascular damage, its association with an increase in the percentage of crossing capillaries remains uncertain. We investigated the association between abdominal obesity and an increase in the percentage of crossing capillaries in the finger nailfold in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Bilirubin protects against vascular complications by reducing oxidative stress in diabetes, but is not fully tested for DPN. This study aimed to evaluate sural nerve conduction impairments (SNCI) as an objective DPN marker and the contribution of bilirubin to SNCI.

Methods: During the first stage, June 2018 to March 2019, an education program using DVD video teaching materials was carried out at three high schools and four universities with research consent from the director of the facility. From 1337 high school students and first- and second-year university students, subjects in their teen years were targeted for analysis.
Background: During pregnancy, physiological, psychological, and social changes affect pregnant women's childcare anxiety and childrearing behavior. However, there are scarce reports on hormonal evaluation related to such anxiety and behavior. Herein, we evaluated changes in salivary cortisol (primary outcome) and oxytocin (secondary outcome) levels of first-time pregnant women when interacting with an infant and discussed the relation of these changes to the women's stress level.

However, the detailed mechanism is not fully understood. In this study, we evaluated the relationship between the severity of diabetic retinopathy and various factors including bilirubin levels and factors influencing bilirubin metabolism.

We randomly assigned 146 patients to 24 weeks of treatment with intensive exercise, including resistance training, plus 5 mg (up to 10 mg) of DAPA daily (IT group) or DAPA alone (CT group). The primary endpoint was the difference in the change in fat-free mass from baseline to 24 weeks between the groups.

However, the association between crossing capillaries and DR is controversial. This study aimed to investigate the association between the percentage of crossing capillaries in the finger nailfold and DR in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

It is important to identify factors associated with dropout from outpatient visits for diabetes treatment among employees with diabetes to determine appropriate support to prevent dropout. Therefore, we explored work-related, personal, and diabetes-related factors relevant for dropout from outpatient diabetes treatment visits among Japanese employees with diabetes.

This study aimed to assess the associations among work-related stress and mental fatigue, and regular exercise in Japanese employees with or without diabetes.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2018, and included 2916 full-time employees aged older than 40 years without cardiovascular disease, cancer, respiratory disease, kidney disease, disc herniation, and depression.
Accumulating evidence indicates that diabetes and obesity are associated with chronic low-grade inflammation and multiple organ failure. Tissue-infiltrated inflammatory M1 macrophages are aberrantly activated in these conditions and contribute to hyperglycemia and insulin resistance. However, it is unclear at which stage these cells become aberrantly activated: as precursor monocytes in the bone marrow or as differentiated macrophages in tissues.

This study was designed to determine the relationships between bilirubin, body fat distribution, and adipose tissue inflammation in patients with type 2 DM and the effect of bilirubin in an obese animal model.
Method: Body fat distribution was measured using an abdominal dual bioelectrical impedance analyzer in patients with type 2 DM.

This study aimed to investigate the association between indices of diabetes and the incidence of hypertension and compare the predictive powers of these indices in middle-aged Japanese.
Methods: This 5-year cohort study included 2,210 Japanese aged 30-64 years without hypertension.
Renal hypoxia may play an important role in the progression of diabetic nephropathy. However, tools that noninvasively and quantitatively measure oxygen tension in the kidney are lacking. Here, we evaluated the feasibility of a noninvasive and quantitative imaging technique using dynamic nuclear polarization magnetic resonance imaging (DNP-MRI) in combination with the oxygen-sensitive paramagnetic agent OX63 for measuring oxygen tension in the kidney.
