Through the use of molecular dynamics techniques, we analyze equilibrium and dynamical aspects of the solvation of Coumarin 314 adsorbed at water/air interfaces in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate surfactant molecules. Three different coverages in the submonolayer regime were considered, 500, 250, and 100 A(2)/SDS molecule. The surfactant promotes two well-differentiated solvation environments, which can be clearly distinguished in terms of their structures for the largest surfactant coverage considered.

This study investigated the joint effect of WBC count and PG on predicting in-hospital outcomes in patients with AMI. WBC count and PG were measured at the time of hospital admission in 3,665 patients with AMI.

Although the essential role of SUZ12 in regulating the activity of the PRC2/3 complexes has been demonstrated, additional function of this protein was suggested. Here, we show that SUZ12 interacts with WD-repeat protein MEP50 in vitro and in vivo.

To investigate the characteristics of these activated microglia, we isolated the cells with high purity from axotomized FN (axFN) 3 days after transection according to the previously reported procedure for explant culture. The isolated microglia exhibited immunocytochemical properties similar to those in vivo, and their numbers increased approximately five- to sevenfold over a period of 10 days without the addition of any mitogens, suggesting that self-reproduction was occurring.

This system provides a clear example of how, by design, molecular geometry can be expressed at the level of the 2D crystal lattice, leading to the formation of open networks. Key elements to control molecular network formation are core symmetry, location and orientation of interacting and connecting substituents, as well as symmetry matching between the networks and the surface.

Pd-catalyzed as well as photoinduced Z/E isomerization of the products were also investigated.

Methods And Results: A total of 2,981 patients (790 women and 2,191 men) participated in the study who were admitted within 24 h after symptom onset and underwent emergency primary stenting for AMI. Compared with men, women were significantly older; had higher incidences of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, Killip class > or =2, and cardiogenic shock; had a higher blood glucose level and a lower serum creatinine level on admission.
The abundant Rap1 in platelets becomes activated when these cells are stimulated by various agonists, but its function has remained unknown. In view of this, we developed an assay to quantitatively measure activated Rap1 and used it to determine relationships between Rap1 activation and several platelet functions: integrin alpha2beta1 activation, tyrosine phosphorylation, and the release reaction. We looked at how these processes are affected by the protein kinase C inhibitor BIMI, tyrosine kinase inhibitor PP2, PI 3-kinase inhibitor wortmannin, and ADP scavenger apyrase.

We also assessed outcome of patients with a history of diabetes mellitus in the PCI era.
Methods: Between January 2001 and December 2001, 1253 patients were admitted to the hospitals within 48 hours after the onset of AMI.
Nuclear receptor (NR) ligands occupy a pocket that lies within the core of the NR ligand-binding domain (LBD), and most NR LBDs lack obvious entry/exit routes upon the protein surface. Thus, significant NR conformational rearrangements must accompany ligand binding and release. The precise nature of these processes, however, remains poorly understood.

However, it remains unclear whether preinfarction angina has a beneficial effect on clinical outcome in elderly patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).
Methods And Results: The study group comprised 484 anterior AMI patients who were admitted within 24 h of onset and underwent emergency PCI.
We present molecular dynamics simulations of the optical Kerr effect in liquid and supercooled water and compare with recent time-resolved Kerr spectroscopy measurements [R. Torre, Nature (London) 428, 296 (2004)]. The short time features of the Kerr response, characterized by peaks near 15, 60, and 160 fs, are weakly temperature dependent.

We examined the association between glucose abnormalities and in-hospital outcome in patients undergoing PCI for acute myocardial infarction (AMI).
Methods And Results: A total of 849 patients with AMI who were admitted within 12 h after symptom onset and underwent emergency PCI were classified according to the presence or absence of admission hyperglycemia, defined as a blood glucose level on admission of >11 mmol/L and whether they had a history of diabetes mellitus: group 1 (n = 504), non-diabetic patients without admission hyperglycemia; group 2 (n = 111), diabetic patients without admission hyperglycemia; group 3 (n = 87), non-diabetic patients with admission hyperglycemia; and group 4 (n = 147), diabetic patients with admission hyperglycemia.
A molecular dynamics simulation study is presented for the dynamics of the polarizability anisotropy of liquid water using the SPC/E model and a dipolar induction scheme that involves the intrinsic polarizability and first hyperpolarizability tensors obtained from ab initio quantum chemical calculations at the MP2/6-311++G(d,p) level. The time-correlation functions for the collective polarizability anisotropy, the optical Kerr effect response, and the frequency spectra are analyzed in terms of the intrinsic and induced polarizability contributions. At short times, the simulated Kerr nuclear response exhibits maxima near 15, 50 and 180 fs, followed by a diffusive tail which has been fitted by a bi-exponential with time constants ca.

We quantified NO emission from tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) wild-type leaves, from nitrate reductase (NR)- or nitrite reductase (NiR)-deficient leaves, from WT- or from NR-deficient cell suspensions and from mitochondria purified from leaves or cells, by following NO emission through chemiluminescence detection. In all systems, NO emission was exclusively due to the reduction of nitrite to NO, and the nitrite concentration was an important rate limiting factor.

Laser irradiation of 2a and 2b induced expulsion of the aromatic fragment, indane, to give the three-dimensional polyyne anions C78H18- and C78H12Cl6-, respectively. Whereas the former anion lost only four hydrogen atoms to form C78H14-, complete loss of all hydrogen and chlorine atoms was observed from the latter anion, to yield a C78- ion that has a fullerene structure which was proven by its characteristic fragmentation pattern.

In this study, the potential mechanisms by which pseudo-asynergy of LV inferior wall (PLI) is observed in normal subjects were investigated. PLI was defined as the outward movement of LV inferior wall observed during more than 50% of systole.

Whereas the activity of NO in erythrocytes, microorganisms, and invertebrates has been shown to be regulated by several hemoglobins, the function of plant hemoglobins in NO detoxification has not yet been elucidated. Here, we show that Arabidopsis thaliana nonsymbiotic hemoglobin AHb1 scavenges NO through production of S-nitrosohemoglobin and reduces NO emission under hypoxic stress, indicating its role in NO detoxification.
