The efforts to signify the relevance of tRNA modifications were always within the limits of prokaryotes, humans, and some fewer model plant systems. The story of tRNA modifications in higher plants is still overlooked, especially in non-model spice crops. Stress causes alterations in tRNA modifications to facilitate the downstream functions of tRNAs.

Background: The central tenet of 'genome content' has been that the 'non-coding' parts are highly enriched with 'microsatellites' or 'Simple Sequence Repeats' (SSRs). We presume that the presence and change in number of repeat unit (n) of SSRs in different genomic locations may or may not become beneficial, depending on the position of SSRs in a gene. Very few studies have looked into the existence of SSRs in the hair-pin precursors of miRNAs (pre-miRNAs).

Quinolone synthase from Aegle marmelos (AmQNS) is a Rutacean-specific plant type III polyketide synthase that synthesizes quinolone, acridone, and benzalacetone with therapeutic potential. Simple architecture and broad substrate affinity of AmQNS make it as one of the target enzymes to produce novel structural scaffolds. Another unique feature of AmQNS despite its high similarity to acridone forming type III polyketide synthase from Citrus microcarpa is the variation in the product formation.

Calcium-dependent protein kinases (CDPKs) are important sensors of Ca elevations in plant cells regulating the gene expression linked with various cellular processes like stress response, growth and development, metabolism, and cytoskeleton dynamics. Ginger is an extensively used spice due to its unique flavor and immense medicinal value. The two major threats that interfere with the large scale production of ginger are the salinity and drought stress.

Functional characterization and ectopic expression studies of chalcone synthase mutants implicate the role of phenylalanine in tailoring the substrate specificity of type III polyketide synthase. Chalcone synthase (CHS) is a plant-specific type III polyketide synthase that catalyzes the synthesis of flavonoids. Native CHS enzyme does not possess any functional activity on N-methylanthraniloyl-CoA, which is the substrate for acridione/quinolone alkaloid biosynthesis.

Small RNAs derived from transfer RNAs were recently assigned as potential gene regulatory candidates for various stress responses in eukaryotes. In this study, we report on the cloning and identification of tRNA derived small RNAs from black pepper plants in response to the infection of the quick wilt pathogen, Phytophthora capsici. 5'tRFs cloned from black pepper were validated as highly expressed during P.

Zingiberaceae or 'ginger family' is the largest family in the order 'Zingiberales' with more than 1300 species in 52 genera, which are mostly distributed throughout Asia, tropical Africa and the native regions of America with their maximum diversity in Southeast Asia. Many of the members are important spice, medicinal or ornamental plants including ginger, turmeric, cardamom and kaempferia. These plants are distinguished for the highly valuable metabolic products, which are synthesised through phenylpropanoid pathway, where type III polyketide synthase is the key enzyme.

Type III polyketide synthases (PKSs) catalyze the biosynthesis of various medicinally important secondary metabolites in plants, but their role in growth and stress response is unclear. Here, we overexpressed quinolone synthase (QNS) from bael in tobacco. QNS-overexpressing plants showed an overall increase in growth, photosynthetic efficiency and chlorophyll content compared to wild type plants.

We report mechanism-based evidence for the anticancer and chemopreventive efficacy of [6]-gingerol, the major active principle of the medicinal plant, Ginger (Zingiber officinale), in colon cancer cells. The compound was evaluated in two human colon cancer cell lines for its cytotoxic effect and the most sensitive cell line, SW-480, was selected for the mechanistic evaluation of its anticancer and chemopreventive efficacy. The non-toxic nature of [6]-gingerol was confirmed by viability assays on rapidly dividing normal mouse colon cells.

Plant miRNAs (18-24nt) are generated by the RNase III-type Dicer endonuclease from the endogenous hairpin precursors ('pre-miRNAs') with significant regulatory functions. The transcribed regions display a higher frequency of microsatellites, when compared to other regions of the genomic DNA. Simple sequence repeats (SSRs) resulting from replication slippage occurring in transcripts affect the expression of genes.
