Gingival Recession (GR) is the movement of gum tissue away from the tooth, exposing the root, which can cause sensitivity and is increasingly addressed for cosmetic reasons; various treatment techniques, including Free Gingival Graft (FGG) and a newer approach called Gingival Unit Graft (GUG), are discussed.
FGG involves grafting procedures that can result in aesthetic issues, while GUG, introduced by Allen in 2004, utilizes a palatal graft that includes marginal gingiva and interdental tissue for improved coverage.
A systematic review of three randomized clinical trials found that GUG significantly outperformed FGG in achieving complete root coverage and reducing vertical recession depth, highlighting its effectiveness in managing GR.
