We compared the effects of milk-feeding in 288 Holstein calves (72 per group) which were fed twice (2F) or thrice (3F) daily, with or without the addition of hydrogenated fat-embedded calcium gluconate (G) supplemented in the starter food and in the daily diet up to the age of 9 months, on the calves' metabolism, growth, health, and reproductive efficiency up to first pregnancy. The calves received 6 L of milk replacer (130 g/L) and had ad libitum access to water and textured calf starter with or without gluconate. Gluconate supplementation promoted a "catch-up" in growth in supplemented calves compared to their counterparts that did not receive gluconate.

However, the effect of handling such semen samples from commercial farms and placing them in very short-term storage has not been elucidated. Therefore, ejaculate from 25 bulls from 1 dairy and 14 beef cattle farms were collected under farm conditions and evaluated for semen quality during the first two hours after collection.

Our objective was to compare beef from WY, WY-by-Angus, or Wangus (WN) steers with European, Angus-by-Charolais-Limousine crossbred steers (ACL), considering metabolic biomarkers pre-slaughtering and nutritional characteristics, including health-related indexes of the lipid fraction. The fattening system with olein-rich diets and no exercise restriction included 82 steers, 24 WY, 29 WN, and 29 ACL.

However, whether Wagyu steers can be profitably raised under conditions different than the traditional Japanese ones remains unclear. From 2018 to 2020, we raised 262 Wagyu purebred steers, 103 Wagyu-by-Angus (Wangus) crossbred steers, and 43 Angus-by-European (ACL) crossbred steers on a Spanish farm with high welfare standards and a locally sourced, high-olein diet.

Forty-two hyperprolific sows were treated with buserelin and inseminated once at a single fixed time. The fertility rate, embryonic vesicles viability and the early embryonic mortality (arrested conceptuses) evaluated post-mortem at 24th day of pregnancy, were analysed in order to assess the effectiveness of each proposed technique.

For that purpose, pictures of vulvas from 60 hyperprolific females (30 gilts and 30 sows) during proestrus and oestrus were taken once a day. Vulva measurements (area, perimeter, length and width) on these pictures were performed using the image processing ImageJ software.

Environmental conditions influence MOET efficiency. Thus, we describe results of 137 in vivo, non-surgical embryo flushings performed between 2016-2020, in a full-blood Japanese Black herd kept in Spain and the possible effects of heat, year, bull, donor genetic value, and metabolic condition.

Animal welfare is of outmost relevance in all animal production systems and it is strongly associated to stress. Stress responses involve endocrine, paracrine and neural systems and the consequences of this stress on the reproductive efficiency of specifically, beef cattle and bulls, need to be highlighted.

The total number of animals studied was 849, and the founded frequency of carrier pigs with chromosomal alterations was 3.8%.

In case of pregnancy, ovarian features (ovulatory efficiency and luteal steroidogenesis) of sows fed with HSF are not affected but embryo features are affected at so early stages like 28 days of pregnancy (first quarter), although embryo viability was still not affected. In this way, offspring from HSF sows showed a higher incidence of alterations in their developmental trajectory, mainly due to a higher incidence of growth retardation, in their steroidogenic activity and in their availability of triglycerides and cholesterol.

The aim of the present study was to establish an easy noninvasive method to monitor reproductive status in wild ungulate females. Feces were collected daily, weekly, or three or four times a week directly from the soil for a period ranging from 1 to 9.

Frozen-thawed semen from five bulls (six ejaculates per bull, three straws per ejaculate), that showed a non-return rate between 60 and 80%, were analyzed to assess sperm chromatin condensation and stability. The chromatin condensation was determined by flow cytometry using propidium iodide as fluorochrome, and the chromatin stability was evaluated by inducing its decondensation with SDS and EDTA.

In this study we analysed modifications of the percentages of spermatozoa bearing Y and X chromosomes when semen samples are submitted to a double swim-up technique as a possible method for producing embryos of known sex with in vitro fertilisation protocols. As an initial experiment to provide accurate evaluation of the method we determined the possible incidence of natural deviations in the primary sex ratio between bulls or ejaculates, analysing the percentage of Y-chromosome DNA bearing spermatozoa (%Y-CDBS) with a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of X- and Y-specific fragments.

Oocytes were matured, inseminated, and cultured in vitro in mSOF medium with 10% FCS with or without glucose supplementation. Exposure to high concentrations of glucose (10, 20, and 30 mM) during bovine embryo development in vitro from zygote to blastocyst resulted in a decrease in the number of cells per embryo and an increase in the frequency of apoptotic cells.
