Aim: To validate the East London Retinopathy of Prematurity algorithm (EL-ROP) in a cohort of infants at risk of developing retinopathy of prematurity (ROP).

Methods: The EL-ROP algorithm was applied retrospectively to routinely collected data from two tertiary neonatal units in England on infants eligible for ROP screening. The EL-ROP recommendation, to screen or not, was compared with the development of treatment-warranted ROP (TW-ROP) for each infant.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to assess how presenting features, tumor size, and treatment methods impact the risk of metastatic death in patients with advanced intraocular retinoblastoma (RB) based on a large international data set.
  • A total of 1,841 patients were evaluated, categorized according to AJCC standards for tumor size, with treatment options including enucleation and various chemotherapy approaches leading to different survival outcomes.
  • Results showed a significant correlation between tumor category and mortality risk, with higher risks linked to larger tumor stages (cT3) and specific complications, while primary enucleation yielded the best survival rates compared to other treatment modalities.

Purpose: To determine the value of clinical features for advanced intraocular retinoblastoma as defined by the eighth edition of the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) cT3 category and AJCC Ophthalmic Oncology Task Force (OOTF) Size Groups to predict the high-risk pathologic features.

Design: International, multicenter, registry-based retrospective case series.

Participants: Eighteen ophthalmic oncology centers from 13 countries over 6 continents shared evaluations of 942 eyes enucleated as primary treatment for AJCC cT3 and, for comparison, cT2 retinoblastoma.

Aim: To investigate whether the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) clinical category cT2b needs to be subclassified by the type and distribution of retinoblastoma (RB) seeding.

Methods: Multicentre, international registry-based data were collected from RB centres enrolled between January 2001 and December 2013. 1054 RB eyes with vitreous or subretinal seeds from 18 ophthalmic oncology centres, in 13 countries within six continents were analysed.

Purpose: To compare metastasis-related mortality, local treatment failure, and globe salvage after retinoblastoma in countries with different national income levels.

Design: International, multicenter, registry-based retrospective case series.

Participants: Two thousand one hundred ninety patients, 18 ophthalmic oncology centers, and 13 countries on 6 continents.

Design: International, multicenter, registry-based retrospective case series.

Participants: A total of 2854 eyes of 2097 patients from 18 ophthalmic oncology centers from 13 countries over 6 continents.

Purpose: To determine the impact of presence or absence of sutures in cases with post-penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) microbial keratitis.

Design: A 10-year retrospective chart review of post-PKP patients admitted with microbial keratitis at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, Melbourne, between January 1998 and December 2008 was undertaken.

Methods: Patients were categorized in 2 groups, "sutures present" and "sutures absent.

Purpose: To describe the relationship of lung disease and function with early age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in a population-based study.

Design: A population-based, cross-sectional study of 12,596 middle-aged participants from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study.

Methods: Lung function was assessed by spirometry.

Purpose: Evaluation of "tuck in" lamellar keratoplasty (TILK) for the surgical management of postkeratoplasty corneal ectasia with peripheral corneal involvement.

Methods: Four eyes of 3 patients with post-penetrating keratoplasty corneal ectasia and contact lens intolerance underwent TILK that included a central lamellar keratoplasty with intrastromal tucking of the peripheral flange, at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, Melbourne, Australia. The main outcome measures analyzed were uncorrected visual acuity, best-corrected visual acuity, keratometry, and endothelial cell density.

Purpose: To evaluate the success of cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive in the management of corneal perforations associated with herpetic keratitis.

Methods: Case records of 46 patients with microbiologically proven herpetic keratitis associated with corneal perforations that were treated with corneal gluing were analyzed retrospectively in a tertiary care hospital. N-Butyl cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive and bandage contact lens were applied in addition to antiviral therapy.

Purpose: To assess the visual outcome after unilateral penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) in a heterogenous group of patients with unilateral corneal disease.

Methods: A retrospective analysis of hospital records of patients who had undergone PKP at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, Melbourne, Australia, over a 10-year period, was performed. All cases with a history of corneal transplantation surgery in one eye and a best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) more than or equal to 0.

Purpose: To study the microbiological and clinical profile of cases of microbial keratitis in patients with Down syndrome.

Methods: A retrospective chart review of all patients with Down syndrome and microbial keratitis admitted to the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, Melbourne, Australia, between January 1997 and January 2007 was undertaken. Main parameters evaluated were clinical and microbiological profile and final outcome.
