Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates bone health in adult patients with dermatomyositis/polymyositis (DM/PM), building on previous research that focused only on children.
  • Results show that adult DM/PM patients have lower bone mineral density (BMD) and higher rates of osteoporosis and fractures compared to healthy controls.
  • Notably, factors like age, weight, and post-menopausal status contributed to the risk of osteoporosis and fractures in these patients, indicating a significant concern for their overall bone health.

Glucocorticoids are widely used in the treatment of lupus patients, and adverse effects, which include osteoporosis and associated fractures, are frequent. Treatment of osteoporosis of young patients should be effective and not harmful to bone growth and remodeling. Bisphosphonates are drugs that decrease the incidence of bone fractures, but their use in juvenile patients is still controversial because of their possible side effects on the growing skeleton.
