The power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of polycrystalline perovskite solar cells (PC-PSCs) have now reached a plateau after a decade of rapid development, leaving a distinct gap from their Shockley-Queisser limit. To continuously mitigate the PCE deficit, nonradiative carrier losses resulting from defects should be further optimized. Single-crystal perovskites are considered an ideal platform to study the efficiency limit of perovskite solar cells due to their intrinsically low defect density, as demonstrated in bulk single crystals.

We demonstrate that chiral response can be achieved in resonant metasurfaces with a monoclinic lattice symmetry (the so-called Bravais oblique lattices) where the mirror symmetry is broken by the lattice asymmetry and also by a substrate, whereas each individual meta-atom remains fully achiral. We describe the underlying physics by introducing a mode chirality parameter as a quantitative measure of the lattice chiral eigenmodes. We confirm experimentally selective linear and nonlinear chiral interaction of resonant silicon metasurfaces with circularly polarized light.

Perovskite thin-film transistors (TFTs) simultaneously possessing exceptional carrier transport capabilities, nonvolatile memory effects, and photosensitivity have recently attracted attention in fields of both complementary circuits and neuromorphic computing. Despite continuous performance improvements through additive and composition engineering of the channel materials, the equally crucial dielectric/channel interfaces of perovskite TFTs have remained underexplored. Here, it is demonstrated that engineering the dielectric/channel interface in 2D tin perovskite TFTs not only enhances the performance and operational stability for their utilization in complementary circuits but also enables efficient synaptic behaviors (optical information sensing and storage) under an extremely low operating voltage of -1 mV at the same time.

As emerging gain materials, lead halide perovskites have drawn considerable attention in coherent light sources. With the development of patterning and integration techniques, a perovskite laser array has been realized by distributing perovskite microcrystals periodically. Nevertheless, the packing density is limited by the crystal size and the channel gap distance.

The orexin system regulates a variety of physiological functions, including the sleep-wake cycle, addiction, foraging behavior, stress and cognitive functioning. Orexin levels in central and peripheral are related to the pathogenesis of many diseases, most notably the narcolepsy, eating disorders, stress-related psychiatric disorders, and neurodegenerative diseases. Recently, it has been reported that the orexin system is distinctly sexually dimorphic, and is strongly associated with neuropsychiatric disorders.

Exploring the development and impacts of drought across different ecosystems can offer new insights for mitigating the adverse effects of drought events. Using the pantropical Lancang-Mekong River Basin as the study region, we investigated the agricultural, ecological, and hydrological drought characteristics and explored their drought progression and recession rates across four vegetation ecosystem types: tropical forests, subtropical forests, shrubs, and crops. We utilized newly developed drought indices based on the ERA5-Land reanalysis dataset, GOSIF chlorophyll fluorescence data, and modified Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) land cover data.

The weak free carrier dispersion effect significantly hinders the adoption of silicon modulators in low-power applications. While various structures have been demonstrated to reduce the half-wave voltage, it is always challenging to balance the trade-off between modulation efficiency and the bandwidth. Here, we demonstrated a slow-wave Michelson structure with 1-mm-long active length.

Dynamic control of circular dichroism in photonic structures is critically important for compact spectrometers, stereoscopic displays, and information processing exploiting multiple degrees of freedom. Metasurfaces can help miniaturize chiral devices but only produce static and limited chiral responses. While external stimuli can tune resonances, their modulations are often weak, and reversing continuously the sign of circular dichroism is extremely challenging.

Significantly increased interests have been witnessed for the 2 µm waveband which is considered to be a promising alternative window for fiber and free-space optical communications. However, the less mature device technology at this wavelength range is one of the primary obstacles toward practical applications. In this work, we demonstrate an efficient and high-speed silicon modulator based on carrier depletion in a coupling tunable resonator.

The orthogonality among the OAM modes provides a new degree of freedom for optical multiplexing communications. So far, traditional Dammann gratings and spatial light modulators (SLMs) have been widely used to generate OAM beams by modulating electromagnetic waves at each pixel. However, such architectures suffer from limitations in terms of having a resolution of only a few microns and the bulkiness of the entire optical system.

Recently, the 2-µm wave band has gained increased interest due to its potential application for the next-generation optical communication. As a proven integration platform, silicon photonics also benefit from the lower nonlinear absorption and larger electro-optic coefficient. However, this spectral range is far beyond the photodetection range of germanium, which places an ultimate limit for on-chip applications.

We introduce a new paradigm for generating high-purity vortex beams with metasurfaces. By applying optical neural networks to a system of cascaded phase-only metasurfaces, we demonstrate the efficient generation of high-quality Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) vortex modes. Our approach is based on two metasurfaces where one metasurface redistributes the intensity profile of light in accord with Rayleigh-Sommerfeld diffraction rules, and then the second metasurface matches the required phases for the vortex beams.

Compared to conventional semiconductors integrated by heteroepitaxy, solution-processable semiconductors provide a much-flexible integration platform due to their solution-processability, and, therefore, more suitable for the multi-material integrated system. However, solution-processable semiconductors are usually incompatible with the micro-fabrication processes.
