As the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS) regulates almost every biological process, the dysregulation or aberrant expression of the UPS components causes many pathological disorders, including cancers. To find a novel target for anticancer therapy, the UPS has been an active area of research since the FDA's first approval of a proteasome inhibitor bortezomib in 2003 for treating multiple myeloma (MM). Here, we summarize newly described UPS components, including E3 ubiquitin ligases, deubiquitinases (DUBs), and immunoproteasome, whose malfunction leads to tumorigenesis and whose inhibitors have been investigated in clinical trials as anticancer therapy since 2020.

Traditional PDF document detection technology usually builds a rule or feature library for specific vulnerabilities and therefore is only fit for single detection targets and lacks anti-detection ability. To address these shortcomings, we build a double-layer detection model for malicious PDF documents based on an entropy method with multiple features. First, we address the single detection target problem with the fusion of 222 multiple features, including 130 basic features (such as objects, structure, content stream, metadata, etc.

Detection of trace tumor markers in blood/serum is essential for the early screening and prognosis of cancer diseases, which requires high sensitivity and specificity of the assays and biosensors. A variety of label-free optical fiber-based biosensors has been developed and yielded great opportunities for Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) of cancer biomarkers. The fiber biosensor, however, suffers from a compromise between the responsivity and stability of the sensing signal, which would deteriorate the sensing performance.

Article Synopsis
  • Conventional anticancer drugs often lead to resistance, making chemotherapy less effective, prompting researchers to explore new compounds from natural sources.
  • A study revealed that extracts from mycelial cultures of a specific fungus inhibited cancer cell growth by inducing apoptosis and causing S-phase arrest.
  • The extracts, referred to as pt-PDB, show potential as a novel anticancer drug that does not increase the proportion of chemoresistant stem cells, offering hope for treating resistant cancers.

Manifesting chemical differences in individual rare earth (RE) element complexes is challenging due to the similar sizes of the tripositive cations and the corelike 4f shell. We disclose a new strategy for differentiating between similarly sized Dy and Y ions through a tailored photochemical reaction of their isostructural complexes in which the f-electron states of Dy act as an energy sink. Complexes RE(hfac)(NMMO) (RE = Dy () and Y (), hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonate, and NMMO = -methylmorpholine--oxide) showed variable rates of oxygen atom transfer (OAT) to triphenylphosphine under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, as monitored by H and F NMR spectroscopies.

Background: Reactivation of cytomegalovirus (CMV) in CMV-seropositive patients after haploidentical T-cell receptor αβ /CD19 depleted hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) is common. Due to delayed CMV-specific immune reconstitution, patients may require prolonged antiviral therapy, including secondary prophylaxis (SP). We present our clinical experience with the off-label use of letermovir for SP in a severely immunocompromised 2-year-old toddler with refractory pre-B-cell ALL and bilateral retinitis caused by resistant CMV (A594V UL97 mutation) following a haploidentical TCRαβ /CD19 depleted HCT.

Although positive-pressure ventilation (PPV) has traditionally been performed using a face mask in neonatal resuscitation, face mask ventilation for delivering PPV has a high failure rate due to mask leaks, airway obstruction, or gastric inflation. Furthermore, face mask ventilation is compromised during chest compressions. Endotracheal intubation in neonates requires a high skill level, with a first-attempt success rate of <50%.

The E3 ligase MDM2 promotes tumor growth and progression by inducing ubiquitin-mediated degradation of P53 and other tumor-suppressing proteins. Here, we identified an MDM2-interacting lncRNA NRON, which promotes tumor formation by suppressing both P53-dependent and independent pathways. NRON binds to MDM2 and MDMX (MDM4) via two different stem-loops, respectively, and induces their heterogenous dimerization, thereby enhancing the E3 ligase activity of MDM2 toward its tumor-suppressing substrates, including P53, RB1, and NFAT1.

Unlabelled: Air pollutants allegedly originating from China have become a thorny issue in South Korea. Despite a neutral view of the topic on the part of the South Korean government, recent public polls show a high correlation between the air pollution issue and negative sentiment toward China. How has the media reported on China regarding air pollutants in South Korea? What is the effect of media reports on air pollution on anti-Chinese sentiment and foreign policy attitudes? By examining news headlines and Twitter data in 2015 and 2018, this work finds that media reports blaming China for air pollution doubled during the 2015-2018 period.
