An innovative tool for mandibular reconstruction in oral malignancies: A pictorial essay.

Mandibular reconstruction is challenging for most head and neck surgeons. Technological advances have led to the development of a new innovative procedure based on the concepts of computer-assisted design (CAD) and virtual surgical planning (VSP). The main disadvantage of this technique is the lack of flexibility, especially in oncology.

Evaluation of factors influencing accuracy of virtual surgical planning in orthognatic surgery.

Three-dimensional virtual surgical planning has become routine practice in orthognatic and reconstructive surgery for the possibility to realize presurgical evaluation of intraoperative bones movements, the prediction of postoperative results and the high level of accuracy. Thanks to surface superimposition between 3D planned and 3D postoperative model of maxillo-facial skeleton, a medium discrepancy less than 1 mm was found in scientific literature, considering 15 different points of maxillofacial skeleton. In our study we decided to evaluate different factors that could invalidate that result in the same cohort of patients, such as sex, kind of dentofacial deformity, asymmetry, type of surgical approach and entity of maxillo-mandibular movements (more or less than 1 mm).

The presence of mold in food, although necessary for production, can involve the presence of secondary metabolites, which are sometimes toxic. is a common saprophytic fungus but it is also the essential fungus used in the production of Roquefort cheese and other varieties of blue cheese containing internal mold. The study was conducted on industrial batches of starters used in the production of the Gorgonzola cheese, with the aim to verify the production of secondary metabolites.

Determination of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from wrapping films and wrapped PDO Italian cheeses by using HS-SPME and GC/MS.

Nowadays food wrapping assures attractive presentation and simplifies self-service shopping. Polyvinylchloride (PVC)- and polyethylene (PE)-based cling-films are widely used worldwide for wrapping cheeses. For this purpose, films used in retail possess suitable technical properties such as clinginess and unrolling capacity, that are achieved by using specific plasticizers during their manufacturing process.

Mid-term results of complex distal humeral fractures.

The aim of this study was to assess outcomes following open reduction and internal fixation in complex fractures of the distal humerus. Between 2000 and 2006, 34 patients were operated for complex fractures of the distal humerus. Bone fixation was obtained with a reverse Y-shaped reconstruction plate in 13 cases and with double plating in 21 cases.

Cerebellar atrophy in a child with hereditary methemoglobinemia type II.

We report the first case of a child with recessive hereditary methemoglobinemia type II with demonstrated cerebellar atrophy. This very rare blood disorder results in mild cyanosis, profound mental and motor impairment, and movement disorders in infancy and childhood. We suggest that children with unexplained severe encephalopathy and cerebellar atrophy should also be tested for hereditary methemoglobinemia type II.

Transient basal ganglia and thalamic involvement following Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection associated with antiganglioside antibodies.

A case of acute and reversible bilateral basal ganglia with thalami involvement associated with serological evidence of Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection is reported. Increased titers of immunoglobulin M antibodies against GM1 ganglioside components were found during an acute phase of neurological illness. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed bilateral involvement of the basal ganglia and thalamus, which disappeared 1 month later.

Tibial plateau fractures in elderly patients.

Tibial plateau fractures are complex injuries which, if not adequately treated, can lead to invalidating sequelae. They constitute on average about 1% of all fractures, and up to 8% in patients over 65 years, and can be caused by both high- and low-energy trauma. Unlike in younger subjects, treatment of tibial plateau fractures in the elderly is not univocal and depends on the patient's functional needs, bone quality and systemic comorbidities.

In this retrospective study, young adults engaged in nonprofessional sportive activities undergoing ACL reconstruction by the Kenneth-Jones technique were assessed clinically and with gait analysis, to detect any deficits persisting even after rehabilitation at a follow- up of approximately 6 months. Eight patients who had undergone elective ligament reconstruction by Kenneth-Jones were assessed between the 5th and 7th month postsurgery with clinical-anamnestic investigation, including the Hughston Clinic subjective knee questionnaire and by gait analysis with the EL.

Complex fractures of the distal radius treated with angular stability plates.

Effect of the vibration board on the strength of ankle dorsal and plantar flexor muscles: a preliminary randomized controlled study.

Aim of this preliminary work is to study the effects of the vibration board on the strength of dorsal and plantar flexor muscles of the ankle through a randomized and controlled observation. Sixteen sedentary right-handed females, ranged from 20 to 30 years of age, were selected; they were not affected by previous ankle sprains and were divided into two randomized groups. The study group followed a vibration board training in the orthostatic position with a 60 degrees flexion of the knee in order to direct its mechanical impulses to the inferior limbs.

Combined arthroscopic and radioscopic management of tibial plateau fractures: report of 18 clinical cases.

Identification of a population with homogeneous characteristics is the fundamental introduction to elaborate a rehabilitation plan after operation of total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The main objectives of our rehabilitative protocol are: improvement of the preoperative clinical state, prevention and management of the common postoperative problems and complications. The first objective requires the improvement of the function of the operated knee (good articular excursion, muscular strengthening and recovery of ambulation and of gait pattern), as well as the reduction of pain.

The chondroepitrochlearis muscle: case report.

An extremely rare muscle disorder in the pectoral region is described. It involves a musculotendinous unit which originates from the pectoralis major and inserts onto the medial epicondyle of the humerus. The authors report a case of an 11-year-old boy, affected bilaterally, who underwent surgical treatment to lengthen the chondroepitrochlearis muscle.

Critical review of infantile fibrous dysplasia: surgical treatment.

A critical review of the surgical treatment of 65 patients with infantile fibrous dysplasia demonstrated that "circumscribed" types of the disease generally do not require surgical treatment, while "extended" types, as well as Albright's syndrome, require early surgical treatment aimed at preventing development of skeletal deformities which are difficult to correct later. Prophylactic intramedullary nailing with nails of suitable caliber is most effective.

Smoked tuna, sliced and vacuum packed, a relatively new product.

The possibility of storing vacuum packed, smoked and sliced tuna fish was studied. The microbiological and chemical analyses demonstrated that hygienic conditions and organoleptic properties remain unaltered after storage at 5 degrees C for 60 days.
