Introduction: Given the risks of cardiovascular disease among pediatric kidney transplant recipients, we evaluated whether there was an association between rapid weight gain (RWG) following kidney transplantation and the development of obesity and hypertension among children enrolled in the North American Pediatric Renal Trials and Collaborative Studies (NAPRTCS) registry.

Methods: This retrospective analysis of the NAPRTCS transplant cohort assessed for RWG in the first year post-transplant and evaluated for obesity and hypertension in children with and without RWG up to 5 years post-transplant. We evaluated three separate eras (1986-1999, 2000-2009, and 2010-2021).

The NLRP3 inflammasome plays a pivotal role in host defense and drives inflammation against microbial threats, crystals, and danger-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs). Dysregulation of NLRP3 activity is associated with various human diseases, making it an attractive therapeutic target. Patients with NLRP3 mutations suffer from Cryopyrin-Associated Periodic Syndrome (CAPS) emphasizing the clinical significance of modulating NLRP3.

Article Synopsis
  • Animal activity patterns vary by season and species, helping with coexistence, but factors affecting small carnivores in Africa are not well understood, especially for competing species.
  • The study focused on two similar genet species, the small-spotted and Cape genets, using radio tracking to analyze their activity over a year, finding both species were primarily nocturnal, with reduced activity during cold-dry seasons.
  • Female genets were generally less active than males, particularly during cold-dry conditions, with Cape genets showing behavioral shifts in activity timings to avoid competition and manage offspring care.

Reliable predictors for electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) effectiveness would allow a more precise and personalized approach for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD). Prediction models were created using a priori selected clinical variables based on previous meta-analyses. Multivariable linear regression analysis was used, applying backwards selection to determine predictor variables while allowing non-linear relations, to develop a prediction model for depression outcome post-ECT (and logistic regression for remission and response as secondary outcome measures).

We present new quantum dynamical results for the reactive scattering of hydrogen molecules from a Cu(111) surface at a surface temperature of 925 K. Reaction, scattering, and diffraction probabilities are compared for results obtained using both an effective Hartree potential (EfHP) and a sudden approximation approach, implemented through the static corrugation model (SCM), to include surface temperature effects. Toward this goal, we show how the SRP48 DFT-functional and an embedded atom potential perform when used to calculate copper lattice constants and thermal expansion coefficients based on lattice dynamics calculations within the quasi-harmonic approximation.

Background And Aims: Mucosal healing is considered as a key therapeutic endpoint in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) and comprises endoscopic improvement of inflammation without taking barrier healing into account. Mucins are critical components of the mucosal barrier function that give rise to structurally diverse isoforms. Unraveling disease-associated mucin isoforms that could act as an indication for barrier function would greatly enhance IBD management.

Introduction: Machine learning models have shown promising potential in individual-level outcome prediction for patients with psychosis, but also have several limitations. To address some of these limitations, we present a model that predicts multiple outcomes, based on longitudinal patient data, while integrating prediction uncertainty to facilitate more reliable clinical decision-making.

Material And Methods: We devised a recurrent neural network architecture incorporating long short-term memory (LSTM) units to facilitate outcome prediction by leveraging multimodal baseline variables and clinical data collected at multiple time points.

Background: Recurrence of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) or steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome (SRNS) after kidney transplant leads to significant morbidity and potentially earlier allograft loss. To date however, reported rates, risk factors and treatment outcomes have varied widely.

Methods: We applied computational phenotypes to a multicenter aggregation of electronic health records data from 7 large pediatric health systems in the USA, to identify recurrence rates, risk factors, and treatment outcomes.

The primary hyperoxalurias (PH 1, 2, and 3) are rare autosomal recessive disorders of glyoxylate metabolism resulting in hepatic overproduction of oxalate. Clinical presentations that should prompt consideration of PH include kidney stones, nephrocalcinosis, and kidney failure of unknown etiology, especially with echogenic kidneys on ultrasound. PH1 is the most common and severe of the primary hyperoxalurias with a high incidence of kidney failure as early as infancy.

Purpose Of Review: Traditional cystic fibrosis (CF) care had been focused on early intervention and symptom mitigation. With the advent of highly effective cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) modulator therapy (HEMT), in particular, the approval of elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor in 2019, there has been a dramatic improvement in outcomes in CF. The purpose of this article is to review the benefits, limitations, and impact of HEMT as well as discuss the new implications, challenges, and hope that modulators bring to people with CF (pwCF).

Interspecific interactions can influence species' activity and movement patterns. In particular, species may avoid or attract each other through reactive responses in space and/or time. However, data and methods to study such reactive interactions have remained scarce and were generally limited to two interacting species.

Sub-Saharan Africa is under-represented in global biodiversity datasets, particularly regarding the impact of land use on species' population abundances. Drawing on recent advances in expert elicitation to ensure data consistency, 200 experts were convened using a modified-Delphi process to estimate 'intactness scores': the remaining proportion of an 'intact' reference population of a species group in a particular land use, on a scale from 0 (no remaining individuals) to 1 (same abundance as the reference) and, in rare cases, to 2 (populations that thrive in human-modified landscapes). The resulting bii4africa dataset contains intactness scores representing terrestrial vertebrates (tetrapods: ±5,400 amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals) and vascular plants (±45,000 forbs, graminoids, trees, shrubs) in sub-Saharan Africa across the region's major land uses (urban, cropland, rangeland, plantation, protected, etc.

Predictive capability, accuracy, and affordability are essential features of a theory that is capable of describing dissociative chemisorption on a metal surface. This type of reaction is important for heterogeneous catalysis. Here we present an approach in which we use diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) to pin the minimum barrier height and construct a density functional that reproduces this value.
