Quality of Life Survey Using NEI VFQ-25 in Japanese Patients With Fuchs Endothelial Corneal Dystrophy.

Objectives: To assess the quality of life in Japanese patients with Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD) using The National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire.

Methods: Here, 34 patients with FECD (FECD group) and 13 healthy individuals (control group) completed the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire Japanese version by interview format. The association between dominant eye corrected distance visual acuity and composite score (component 11) or subscales in the FECD group was evaluated using Spearman rank correlation coefficient.

Induced pluripotent stem-cell-derived corneal epithelium for transplant surgery: a single-arm, open-label, first-in-human interventional study in Japan.

Background: The loss of corneal epithelial stem cells from the limbus at the edge of the cornea has severe consequences for vision, with the pathological manifestations of a limbal stem-cell deficiency (LSCD) difficult to treat. Here, to the best of our knowledge, we report the world's first use of corneal epithelial cell sheets derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) to treat LSCD.

Methods: This non-randomised, single-arm, clinical study involved four eyes of four patients with LSCD at the Department of Ophthalmology, Osaka University Hospital.

Introduction: Nociplastic pain (NP), a third category of chronic pain, offers a framework for elucidating its pathophysiology and treatment strategies. One of the characteristics of NP is comorbidity of symptoms other than pain, such as psychological and cognitive problems; therefore, these can be clues to understanding NP. Recently, we reported several cases with comorbid symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Changes in rotator movement during early gait acquisition in after total hip arthroplasty.

Background: In walking in healthy adults, rotation of the hip joint affects stride length and shifts the center of gravity, but these are not seen in hip osteoarthritis which affects gait. In gait of total hip arthroplasty, there are few reports on changes in the horizontal plane. This study clarified the preoperative and early postoperative gait characteristics of patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty.

A Citizen Science and Photovoice Approach to Food Asset Mapping and Food System Planning.

Food asset mapping conducted by planners and policymakers usually consists of an online map identifying the locations of food-related sites in cities. However, food asset mapping may be limited in its consideration for ecological and cultural assets critical for community food security. Furthermore, what are considered "assets" may not reflect the everyday lived experiences of marginalized communities.

Rethinking food loss and waste to promote sustainable resource use and climate change mitigation in agri-food systems: A review.

The sustainable agri-food system is an important sector recognized for promoting the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals on food security, resource conservation and climate change mitigation. However, the increasing food loss and waste (FLW) along the supply chains has continued to hinder these goals. This study evaluates the trend of FLW research from 1975 to 2022 and how it promotes the achievement of resource and environmental sustainability in agri-food systems.

Structural mechanism of bridge RNA-guided recombination.

Insertion sequence (IS) elements are the simplest autonomous transposable elements found in prokaryotic genomes. We recently discovered that IS110 family elements encode a recombinase and a non-coding bridge RNA (bRNA) that confers modular specificity for target DNA and donor DNA through two programmable loops. Here we report the cryo-electron microscopy structures of the IS110 recombinase in complex with its bRNA, target DNA and donor DNA in three different stages of the recombination reaction cycle.

Complete remission of giant cell myocarditis by prednisolone monotherapy: A case with mild inflammation demonstrated by mismatch between T2-high intensity areas and late gadolinium enhancement.

Unlabelled: Giant cell myocarditis (GCM) is a potentially lethal subtype of myocarditis. Herein, we report a case of a 22-year-old woman with GCM who was successfully treated with prednisolone monotherapy. The patient had a fever and shortness of breath and was referred to our hospital.

Factors affecting the quality of life of patients with medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw during treatment: A quality-of-life survey and causal analysis.

This prospective cohort study aimed to investigate the impact of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) on health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and oral health-related QOL (OHRQOL) and the association between the downstaging of MRONJ and OHRQOL. The HRQOL and OHRQOL of 44 patients with MRONJ were assessed using the SF-36v2 and the General Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI), respectively. Treatment was performed in accordance with the AAOMS position paper (2014).

Clinical Benefits of Oral Anticoagulants for Elderly Patients With Cardioembolic Stroke at High Bleeding Risk.

Background/aim: The relationship between the severity of cardioembolic stroke (CES) and oral anticoagulant (OAC) treatment before stroke onset in very elderly (≥80 years) patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) at high bleeding risk remains unknown.

Patients And Methods: A total of 364 consecutive patients (≥80 years) with CES and NVAF within 48 h following stroke onset were investigated. High bleeding risk was defined as follows: Bleeding history, renal dysfunction (creatinine clearance <30 ml/min), low body weight (≤45 kg), and antiplatelet or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug use.

The present study introduces a methodology that employs laser-based strategies for the development of antimicrobial interfaces on tricalcium phosphate-hydroxyapatite (TCP-HA) scaffolds.

Medical Record Survey after Comprehensive Health Checkup Referral and Its Contribution to the Early Detection of Cancer.

Comprehensive health checkups in Japan are a preventive method to detect cancer and metabolic diseases. Unlike group medical examinations, individual examinations in health checkups are possible, with additional tests possible for disease detection. However, it is difficult to accurately ascertain the results from only the report after referral to a medical institution in individuals suspected of having cancer who need to be examined.

Successful Treatment of Eosinophilic Granulomatosis With Polyangiitis: A Case of Refractory Peripheral Neuropathy and Comorbid Chronic Progressive Pulmonary Aspergillosis Treated With Mepolizumab.

Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA) is a systemic necrotizing vasculitis accompanied by granulomas and eosinophilic inflammation, exhibiting marked peripheral blood eosinophiliaandasthma. Neuropathy is a difficult-to-treat common manifestation that frequently remains after achieving clinical remission with current therapy in a subpopulation of patients with EGPA with or without life-threatening organ involvement. Refractory neuropathy regularly reduces the quality of life and requires glucocorticoids (GCs) and/or immunosuppressants for a long time.

Serial longitudinal changes of coronary calcified plaques with clear outer borders under intensive lipid management: insights from optical coherence tomography.

Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for calcified lesions is one of the most challenging procedures related to worse clinical outcomes. To stabilize vulnerable plaques, intensive lipid management is recommended; however, the serial changes of calcified plaques under intensive lipid management are unknown. A total of 31 patients (mean age, 63 ± 10 years; men, 29 patients) who underwent PCI with intensive lipid management were retrospectively studied.

Comparison of Cefazolin and Ceftriaxone as Antimicrobial Prophylaxis in Pancreatoduodenectomy with Preoperative Drainage: Incidence of Surgical Site Infection and Susceptibility of Bacteria in Bile.

Background: The optimal perioperative antimicrobial agent for preventing surgical site infection (SSI) in pancreatoduodenectomy (PD) with preoperative biliary drainage (PBD) remains unclear.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 288 patients who underwent PD after PBD between 2010 and 2020 at our institution. Patients were classified into two groups according to the perioperative antimicrobial agent used (cefazoline [CEZ] group [n = 108] and ceftriaxone [CTRX] group [n = 180]).

A case of repeat oligoprogressive castration-resistant prostate cancer treated with pulmonary metastasectomy.

Introduction: Several retrospective studies have demonstrated the efficacy of progressive site-directed therapy for oligoprogressive castration-resistant prostate cancer. However, eligible patients for progressive site-directed therapy in these studies were limited to oligoprogressive castration-resistant prostate cancer with bone or lymph node metastases without visceral metastases, and little is known about the efficacy of progressive site-directed therapy for oligoprogressive castration-resistant prostate cancer with visceral metastases.

Case Presentation: We report a case with castration-resistant prostate cancer previously treated with enzalutamide and docetaxel, in which only a solitary lung metastasis was identified throughout the course of treatment.

Background And Purpose: Quantitative measures have been proposed to aid the visual interpretation of amyloid PET. Our objective was to develop and validate quantitative software that enables calculation of the Centiloid (CL) scale and Z-score for amyloid PET with F-florbetapir.

Methods: This software was developed as a toolbox in statistical parametric mapping 12 running on MATLAB Runtime.

Long-Term Corneal Refractive Power Changes Two Decades After Radial Keratotomy With Microperforations.

We retrospectively examined corneal refractive power in three patients who had been followed up for more than 20 years after radial keratotomy (RK) with microperforations (MPs). All patients underwent RK in both eyes and were referred to our clinic because of postoperative decreased vision. MP was observed in five of the six eyes at the initial visit.

Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome with primary thymic marginal zone B-cell lymphoma: A case report.

Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome (LEMS) is an autoimmune paraneoplastic syndrome with proximal muscle weakness, that often complicates small cell lung cancer. It is known that neurological symptoms do not improve with malignancy treatment alone in many LEMS patients, therefore treatment is often difficult. Since Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome is a rare disease with a frequency of about 1/100 that of myasthenia gravis, there are only a few case reports on malignancy complications other than small cell lung cancer.
