Tapeworm Infection Diagnosed after Campylobacter jejuni-induced Enteritis.

A 35-year-old man with fever and diarrhea visited our hospital because of white string-like fecal excretion. Based on a morphological examination of the excreted object, a Diphyllobothrium infection was suspected. Additionally, Gram staining of a fecal sample revealed Campylobacter infection.

Diencephalic Syndrome: Misleading Clinical Onset of Low-Grade Glioma.

Background: Diencephalic Syndrome is an atypical early manifestation of low-grade gliomas; so, it is important to detect it in patients that experience a failure to thrive despite adequate length growth and food intake. The purpose of this article is to focus attention on this rare but potentially dangerous cause of poor weight gain or stunting in childhood.

Materials And Methods: We describe four patients with Diencephalic Syndrome and low-grade gliomas who were evaluated in our institution from January 2017 to December 2021.

Neuroblastic tumors and neurofibromatosis type 1: A retrospective multicenter study in Italy and systematic review of the literature.

Background: Neuroblastic tumors (NBTs) are the most common extra-cranial solid tumors of childhood. Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is the most common neurocutaneous disorder with a predisposition to tumors. The co-occurrence of NBTs in the setting of NF1 has been occasionally reported, suggesting a non-casual association and likely configuring a spectrum of neural crest-derived disorders.

Report of Two Cases of Pediatric IgG4-Related Lymphadenopathy (IgG4-LAD): IgG4-Related Disease (IgG4-RD) or a Distinct Clinical Pathological Entity?

IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a recently discovered immune-mediated fibroinflammatory condition, uncommon in the pediatric population, that could involve multiple organs and induce cancer-like lesions and organ damage. Its main features are multiple injuries in different sites, a dense lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate rich in IgG4 plasma cells, storiform fibrosis, and often high serological concentrations of IgG4. Autoimmune pancreatitis is the most common manifestation, mainly in adults.

Efficacy and immunogenicity of R21/Matrix-M vaccine against clinical malaria after 2 years' follow-up in children in Burkina Faso: a phase 1/2b randomised controlled trial.

Background: Malaria is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. We previously reported the efficacy of the R21/Matrix-M malaria vaccine, which reached the WHO-specified goal of 75% or greater efficacy over 12 months in the target population of African children. Here, we report the safety, immunogenicity, and efficacy results at 12 months following administration of a booster vaccination.

Efficacy of a low-dose candidate malaria vaccine, R21 in adjuvant Matrix-M, with seasonal administration to children in Burkina Faso: a randomised controlled trial.

Background: Stalled progress in controlling Plasmodium falciparum malaria highlights the need for an effective and deployable vaccine. RTS,S/AS01, the most effective malaria vaccine candidate to date, demonstrated 56% efficacy over 12 months in African children. We therefore assessed a new candidate vaccine for safety and efficacy.

Rapid Assembly of Colloidal Crystals under Laser Illumination on a GeSbTe Substrate.

Optical techniques have been actively studied for manipulating nano- to microsized objects. However, long-range attraction and rapid transport of particles within thin quasi-two-dimensional systems are difficult because of the weak thermophoretic forces. Here, we introduce an experimental system that can rapidly generate quasi-two-dimensional colloidal crystals in deionized water, sandwiched between two hard plates.

Swept-source optical coherence tomographic findings in eyes with metastatic choroidal tumor.

Purpose: To report the swept-source optical coherence tomographic (OCT) findings in two eyes with choroidal metastases.

Observations: Two patients with choroidal metastasis were studied. The metastasis was from a breast cancer in Case 1 and from a lung cancer in Case 2.

Ribavirin inhibits Zika virus (ZIKV) replication in vitro and suppresses viremia in ZIKV-infected STAT1-deficient mice.

Zika fever, a mosquito-borne infectious disease caused by Zika virus (ZIKV), is an epidemic disease for which no effective therapy has been established. The recent outbreaks of ZIKV in Brazil and French Polynesia have been linked to a considerable increase in the incidence of fetal microcephaly and other diseases such as Guillain-Barre syndrome. Because there is currently no specific therapy or vaccine, the early exploitation of a method to prevent expansion of ZIKV is a high priority.

Hemodynamics of focal choroidal excavations.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the hemodynamics of focal choroidal excavations (FCEs). Four eyes of four patients with a FCE were studied. Indocyanine green angiography (ICGA), laser speckle flowgraphy (LSFG), optical coherence tomography (OCT), and multi-focal electroretinography (mfERG) were performed to investigate the choroidal hemodynamics and the morphological and functional changes.

[Descriptive study of cancer incidence in the area around the Ispra Joint Research Centre (JCR)].

Objective: to assess the effects of radioactive emissions from the EU Joint Research Centre (JRC) (nuclear) at Ispra, the Local Health Authority (ASL) of Varese carried out an ecological study to measure any excess incidence of cancer in the surrounding population.

Design And Setting: after estimation of historical exposure levels in the surrounding population, the incidence rates of leukaemia and other exposure-related tumours were calculated from data in the population based Lombardy Cancer Registry (Varese Province). By indirect standardization, the expected cases (based on incidence rate in the Province) were compared with observed cases in the close-by municipality of Ispra, in municipalities within a 5 km radius of the JRC (5kmArea) and in the area covered by the District of Sesto Calende (DistrictArea).

[Unilateral total pulmonary lavage for pulmonary alveolar proteinosis and an algorithm to select lavage procedures].

In 8 patients with pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (7 with autoimmune pulmonary alveolar proteinosis and 1 with secondary pulmonary alveolar proteinosis related to Behcet disease), we performed unilateral total pulmonary lavage 41 times (including 2 sessions in which lavage was discontinued) between March 1991 and January 2008. Reasons for discontinuation consisted of severe hypoxemia and leakage of lavage fluid into the non-washed lung. In this study, we describe changes in arterial blood gas and limitations in 41 sessions of unilateral total pulmonary lavage, and report an algorithm for lavage procedures prepared based on our experience and previous studies regarding unilateral total pulmonary lavage.

Improvement of motor functions by noisy vestibular stimulation in central neurodegenerative disorders.

Through the cerebellar vermis, the vestibular nerves are known to influence the basal ganglia and the limbic system. By means of noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS), it may be possible to ameliorate movement disorders, particularly akinesic symptoms, in patients with central neurodegenerative disorders. We evaluated the effect of 24-hour noisy GVS on a power-law temporal autocorrelation exponent of daytime wrist activity, separately for higher (local maxima) and lower (local minima) levels of activity, in 14 hospitalized patients.

Paolo Minonzio was a physician working in a little country town near Varese in XIX century. He wrote a diary illustrating his medical experience which represents an interesting document of the spreading of bacteriological theories in a provincial context.

[Use of healthcare services by elderly people in a local health authority in Varese (Italy)].

Older people use more healthcare than younger people and aging of the population is considered to be one of the main factors leading to consumption of healthcare resources. The aim of this study was to evaluate rates of hospitalization, use of out-patient services and medicine confections among the elderly population (>65 years) in the local health authority of Varese (Italy), in the three-year period from 2003-2005, and to calculate the trend for the years 2006 and 2007. Rates of hospitalization and drug use remained stable while use of out-patient services showed an increasing trend.

Generation of pyridyl coordinated organosilicon cation pool by oxidative Si-Si bond dissociation.

An organosilicon cation stabilized by intramolecular pyridyl coordination was effectively generated and accumulated by oxidative Si-Si bond dissociation of the corresponding disilane using low temperature electrolysis, and was characterized by NMR and CSI-MS.

Increased circulating platelet-derived microparticles are associated with stent-induced vascular inflammation.

Inflammation as well as platelet activation at the site of local vessel-wall injury plays an essential role in the mechanism of restenosis after Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Platelet-derived microparticles (PDMPs) released from activated platelets are thought to play a role in the inflammatory process, possibly interacting with leukocyte integrin Mac-1. We serially measured circulating PDMPs, high-sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and activated Mac-1 on the surface of neutrophils in 61 patients undergoing coronary stenting.

Aging of complex heart rate dynamics.

We reveal unexpected origins of age induced departure from 1/f-type temporal scaling in healthy human heart rate. Contrary to the widely established view, we provide evidence that age induced dynamical imbalance in the autonomic control is not due to the emergent functional dominance of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS), but due to emerging (age dependent) relative dynamic dominance of the parasympathetic nervous system function. In particular, we demonstrate that the age induced alterations of healthy heart rate dynamics asymptotically resemble those in so-called primary autonomic failure with neurogenic SNS dysfunction and in other neurodegenerative disorders, including Parkinson's disease even without known autonomic abnormalities.

Papillary thyroid carcinoma with anaplastic transformation showing a rhabdoid phenotype solely in the cervical lymph node metastasis.

We describe a rare case of anaplastically transformed papillary thyroid carcinoma with a rhabdoid phenotype appearing solely in a metastatic focus. A 77-year-old man presented with a rapidly enlarging, painful right lateral cervical mass. CT scan revealed a tumor in the right upper pole of the thyroid gland and a right lateral cervical mass.

Noisy vestibular stimulation improves autonomic and motor responsiveness in central neurodegenerative disorders.

The vestibular nerves are known to influence neuronal circuits in the medullary cardiovascular areas and, through the cerebellar vermis, the basal ganglia and the limbic system. By means of noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS), it might be possible to ameliorate blunted responsiveness of degenerated neuronal circuits of patients with multi system atrophy or Parkinson's disease, or both. We evaluated the effect of 24-hour noisy GVS on long-term heart rate dynamics in 7 patients with multi system atrophy and on daytime trunk activity dynamics in 12 patients with either levodopa-responsive Parkinson's disease or levodopa-unresponsive parkinsonism.

Electrical and mechanical alternans during percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty in a patient with acute myocardial infarction--a case report.

The authors report a rare type of cardiac alternans during percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) in a patient with acute myocardial infarction. Not only ST segment but also QRS alternans were observed on electrocardiogram and were accompanied by mechanical alternans. The mechanism of these unusual findings is briefly discussed.

Remarkable improvement of myocardial metaiodobenzylguanidine uptake after surgery in a patient with pheochromocytoma-a case report.

A patient with pheochromocytoma showed remarkable improvement of myocardial metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) uptake within a short time after surgical resection of the tumor. Myocardial MIBG findings in this case may contribute to an interpretation of the kinetics of MIBG in the human heart.
