Aviation is among the social sectors most impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and at the same time has contributed to the rapid global spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. SARS-CoV-2 is one of the coronaviruses that have led to outbreaks such as MERS-CoV in the past. This group of pathogens, as well as others that may be unknown at this time, will continue to challenge our society in the future.

We present a novel approach to x-ray microscopy based on a multilayer zone plate which is positioned behind a sample similar to an objective lens. However, unlike transmission x-ray microscopy, we do not content ourselves with a sharp intensity image; instead, we incorporate the multilayer zone plate transfer function directly in an iterative phase retrieval scheme to exploit the large diffraction angles of the small layers. The presence of multiple diffraction orders, which is conventionally a nuisance, now comes as an advantage for the reconstruction and photon efficiency.

Using multilayer zone plates (MZPs) as two-dimensional optics, focal spot sizes of less than 10 nm can be achieved, as we show here with a focus of 8.4 nm × 9.6 nm, but the need for order-sorting apertures prohibits practical working distances.

X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is a powerful element-specific technique that allows the study of structural and chemical properties of matter. Often an indirect method is used to access the X-ray absorption (XA). This work demonstrates a new XAS implementation that is based on off-axis transmission Fresnel zone plates to obtain the XA spectrum of LaSrMnO by analysis of three emission lines simultaneously at the detector, namely the O 2p-1s, Mn 3s-2p and Mn 3d-2p transitions.

The focusing and coherence properties of the NanoMAX Kirkpatrick-Baez mirror system at the fourth-generation MAX IV synchrotron in Lund have been characterized. The direct measurement of nano-focused X-ray beams is possible by scanning of an X-ray waveguide, serving basically as an ultra-thin slit. In quasi-coherent operation, beam sizes of down to 56 nm (FWHM, horizontal direction) can be achieved.

The objective of the study was to assess the value of quantitative multiplex real-time PCR examination of bulk tank milk samples for bovine mastitis pathogens as a tool for herd level diagnosis. Using a logistic regression model, this study is aimed at calculating the threshold level of the apparent within-herd prevalence as determined by quarter milk sample cultivation of all lactating cows, thus allowing the detection of a herd positive for a specific pathogen within certain probability levels. A total of 6,335 quarter milk samples were collected and cultured from 1,615 cows on 51 farms in Germany.

The established role of VEGF signaling in promoting tumor angiogenesis has led to the development and clinical validation of several agents that selectively target this pathway in patients with advanced-stage malignancies. These include neutralizing anti-VEGF monoclonal antibodies, soluble VEGF receptors and small-molecule inhibitors of VEGF receptor function, administered either as monotherapy or in combination with chemotherapy. Several modes of action have been identified, such as inhibition of new vessel growth, regression of newly formed vasculature, alteration of tumor vessel function and direct effects on tumor cells.

This review will provide physicians and oncologists with an overview of side effects related to targeted agents that inhibit vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), epidermal growth factor (EGF) and mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling in the treatment of solid tumors. Such targeted agents can be divided into monoclonal antibodies, tyrosine kinase inhibitors, multitargeted tyrosine kinase inhibitors and serine/threonine kinase inhibitors. Molecular targeted therapies are generally well tolerated, but inhibitory effects on the biological function of the targets in healthy tissue can result in specific treatment-related side effects, particularly with multitargeted agents.

Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a serine protease that is overexpressed in prostate carcinoma and represents a molecular target for selectively releasing an anticancer agent from a prodrug formulation. In this work, we developed albumin-binding prodrugs with the structures MT-Ser-Ser-Tyr-Tyr- Ser-Gly-DOXO, MT-Asn-Ser-Ser-Tyr-Phe-Gln-DOXO (MT = maleimidotriethyleneglycol acid; DOXO = Doxorubicin) or EMC-Arg-Arg-Ser-Ser-Tyr-Tyr-Ser-Gly-DOXO (EMC = epsilon-maleimidocaproic acid; X = amino acid). The maleimide Doxorubicin derivatives bound rapidly to the cysteine-34 position of endogenous and exogenous albumin and were efficiently cleaved by PSA at the P(1)-P'(1) scissile bond, releasing a respective Doxorubicin dipeptide (Ser-Gly-DOXO or Phe-Gln-DOXO).

Purpose Of Review: To present a review of the current literature regarding the management of glaucoma-filtering bleb infections.

Recent Findings: With the increased use of intraoperative antifibrotic (eg, mitomycin and fluorouracil) as an adjunct to standard trabeculectomy, an increased incidence is seen of late-onset filtering bleb-related infections. These infections range from infections localized to the bleb (blebitis) to endophthalmitis.

During x-ray based navigation a number of errors causes distortions in the output image. These errors lead to a fail position of the surgical instrument relative to the patients anatomy. To minimize these influences and to develop dewarping techniques an exact error source identification is necessary.

Glaucoma is defined by a typical optic neuropathy accompanied by characteristic visual field loss and eventual blindness. The major risk factor for glaucoma is elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). Lowering IOP is currently the only proven method for reducing the risk of glaucomatous visual field loss and remains the primary goal of therapy.
