Background: Placental abruption is a critical obstetric condition characterized by the premature separation of the placenta from the uterus, leading to severe maternal and fetal complications. In Ethiopia, the maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality rates are alarmingly high, and placental abruption significantly contributes to these adverse outcomes. Despite its severity, there is a lack of comprehensive data on the burden, risk factors, and outcomes associated with placental abruption in the Ethiopian context.

Background: American College of Surgeons (ACS) trauma center verification has demonstrated improved outcomes at individual centers, but its impact on statewide Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP) Collaboratives is unknown. A statewide TQIP Collaborative, founded in 2011, noted underperformance in six of eight patient cohorts identified in the TQIP Collaborative report. We hypothesized that requiring ACS verification for level I and II trauma centers would result in improved outcomes for the state collaborative.

Experimental observations have revealed both direct and indirect manifestations of DQI, although a comprehensive understanding of the underlying causes of these distinct outcomes remains elusive. In both cases, DQI lowers the conductance, but only the direct case exhibits a characteristic V-shaped dip in differential conductance.

To circumvent the typical exponential conductance decay for increasing length in molecule-based wires, topological states, which describe the occurrence of discontinuities of a bulk material's electronic structure confined to its surface, can be realized for molecules by the introduction of unpaired spins at the molecular termini. The resulting high conductance and reversed conductance decay are typically only observed for shorter molecules, as the terminal spins must be within the electronic coupling range to produce the desired effects.

Methods: PROMISE is a multicenter prospective, observational study of ETI in pwCF ≥12 years and at least one F508del allele. The PROMISE Endocrine sub-study (PROMISE-ENDO) enrolled participants at 10 CF Centers where hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) was collected and 3-hour oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTT) conducted to examine glucose tolerance, glucose excursions, insulin secretory rates (deconvolution of C-peptide) and sensitivity (oral minimal model) prior to ETI and 12-18 months (mos) and 24-30 mos following ETI initiation.
One key aspect for the development of functional molecular electronic devices is the ability to precisely tune and reversibly switch the conductance of individual molecules in electrode-molecule-electrode junctions in response to external stimuli. In this work, we present a new approach to access molecular switches by deliberately controlling the flexibility in the molecular backbone. We here describe two new conductance switches based on bis(triarylamines) that rely on the reversible toggling between two conformers, each associated with vastly different conductances.

The epithelial lining of luminal organs provides an immune barrier against external factors and regulates transport of nutrients, ions, and water into the body. Several conditions are associated with a breakdown or dysfunction of the epithelial lining. Short circuit current (I) measurement using a bulky, expensive, and hard to deploy system known as the Ussing chamber is the gold standard for evaluation of epithelial transport function but requires tissue excision.

We followed a phase 1 pilot investigation of the feasibility of prospective ISS estimation (eISS) by trauma surgeons within 1 day of admission with an investigation of the impact of a simple educational aid on the accuracy of these estimations. Eleven surgeons evaluated 178 patients in phase 2.

Of 3142 players who signed a contract with at least one NFL Club during the 2021 season, there were 14,903 prescriptions for pain medications issued to 2207 players. During the 2022 season, there were 14,880 prescription pain medications issued to 2189 players (out of a population of 3152).

Background: Endogenous and exogenous hormones may be present in beef. Human consumption of hormones has been linked to adverse health effects.
Objective: To estimate daily intake of hormonal growth promotants (HGP) from beef consumed by the US population.
The kinetics of many chemical reactions can be readily explained with a statistical approach, for example, using a form of transition state theory and comparing calculated Gibbs energies along the reaction coordinate(s). However, there are cases where this approach fails, notably when the vibrational relaxation of the molecule to its statistical equilibrium occurs on the same time scale as the reaction dynamics, whether it is caused by slow relaxation, a fast reaction, or both. These nonstatistical phenomena are then often explored computationally using (quasi)classical ab initio molecular dynamics by calculating a large number of trajectories while being prone to issues such as zero-point energy leakage.

CFTR modulators may improve outcomes in patients with COPD, although recent data regarding magnitude of benefit have been inconclusive and effects on mucociliary clearance are unknown. We conducted a phase 2, randomized, double blind placebo control trial to determine safety and tolerability, and explore the potential mechanism of ivacaftor for the treatment of COPD.

PFAS contamination in water systems has been linked to a variety of sources including hydrocarbon fire suppression activities, industrial and military land uses, agricultural applications of biosolids, and consumer products. To assess PFAS in California tap water, we collected 60 water samples from inside homes in four different geographic regions, both urban and rural.

N1303K (Asn1303Lys), one of the most common class 2 CFTR defects, has not been approved for these therapies by any regulatory agency. Preclinical investigation by our laboratories showed N1303K CFTR activation with elexacaftor-tezacaftor-ivacaftor (ETI).

Single-molecule experiments offer a unique means to probe molecular properties of individual molecules-yet they rest upon the successful control of background noise and irrelevant signals. In single-molecule transport studies, large amounts of data that probe a wide range of physical and chemical behaviors are often generated. However, due to the stochasticity of these experiments, a substantial fraction of the data may consist of blank traces where no molecular signal is evident.

There are gaps in knowledge surrounding bronchiectasis, for which there are no published US-based treatment guidelines or FDA-approved therapies. Given the current challenges and gaps in care, the authors of this article convened for an AJMC® roundtable in March 2024.
