- Monkeypox (MPX) is a rare viral disease similar to smallpox, with sporadic outbreaks in Nigeria since 2017, worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic impacting disease monitoring.
- This study aimed to enhance the surveillance of MPX in three priority states (Rivers, Delta, and Bayelsa) by training community volunteers to actively search for cases over a three-month period.
- The enhanced surveillance led to the identification of 25 suspected MPX cases, with 3 confirmed positives, demonstrating that better monitoring can significantly improve reporting and response to the disease in affected areas.
