Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the significance of tumor size in T3b differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) by analyzing data from 6,282 patients who had thyroid surgery between 2000 and 2017.
  • T3b tumors were categorized into three groups based on size—T3b-1 (≤2 cm), T3b-2 (2-4 cm), and T3b-3 (>4 cm)—to evaluate their impact on survival outcomes.
  • Findings suggest that T3b-1 tumors show survival rates similar to T1 tumors, indicating a potential need to reclassify T3b-1 as T1 for better prognostic accuracy in cancer staging.

The incidence of concomitant thyroid cancer in Graves' disease varies and Graves' disease can make the diagnosis and management of thyroid nodules more challenging. Since the majority of Graves' disease patients primarily received non-surgical treatment, identifying biomarkers for concomitant thyroid cancer in patients with Graves' disease may facilitate planning the surgery. The aim of this study is to identify the biomarkers for concurrent thyroid cancer in Graves' disease patients and evaluate the impact of being overweight on cancer risk.

Article Synopsis
  • Metastasis to cervical lymph nodes is common in differentiated thyroid cancer, and this study explored the effectiveness of measuring washout CYFRA 21-1 levels alongside thyroglobulin (Tg) for diagnosing such metastases.
  • The study included 53 patients undergoing thyroid surgery, where specific lymph nodes were sampled and the levels of Tg and CYFRA 21-1 were compared between metastatic and benign nodes.
  • Combined analysis of washout Tg and CYFRA 21-1 led to a diagnostic accuracy of 92.5%, outperforming each marker individually, and providing valuable information when cytology results are inconclusive.

Article Synopsis
  • - A study evaluated the safety and effectiveness of single-port trans-axillary robot-assisted thyroidectomy (SP-TART) across 300 patients at St. Mary's Hospital in Seoul from October 2021 to May 2023.
  • - The majority of patients underwent less than total thyroidectomy (LTT), with mean operative times for LTT, total thyroidectomy (TT), and TT with modified radical neck dissection (TT c mRND) recorded as 69.8, 104.2, and 223.7 minutes, respectively.
  • - Complications such as postoperative bleeding and transient hypoparathyroidism were reported, but overall, SP-TART proved to be a safe and effective surgical option with minimal sc

BRAF positivity is associated with increased aggressiveness of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC), and age is an important prognostic factor. However, the association between age and BRAF positivity and the recurrence risk has not been investigated. This study aimed to investigate the impact of age on recurrence between patients with BRAF-positive and -negative PTC.

Article Synopsis
  • Papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) often presents as multifocal, impacting prognosis, and this study compares outcomes between unilateral and bilateral multifocal PTC in 1745 patients.* -
  • Initially, no major differences in recurrence rates were found between unilateral and bilateral PTC, but after adjusting for other factors, unilateral multifocality showed a higher risk of recurrence and poorer disease-free survival (DFS).* -
  • Researchers emphasize the need for thorough preoperative evaluations for multifocality and recommend short-term follow-ups post-surgery for patients with unilateral multifocal PTC to monitor for recurrences.*
