Background: The colonization of (SA) acquired in nosocomial infections may develop acute and chronic infections such as Methicillin-Resistant (MRSA) in the nose. As a commensal microorganism with the ability to form a biofilm, SA can dwell on the skin, nostrils, throat, perineum, and axillae of healthy humans. Nitric oxide (NO) is an unstable gas with various molecular functions and has antimicrobial properties which are converted into many potential treatments.

Introduction: Wounds are colonized frequently by heterogeneous microflora. Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) and Staphylococcus aureus (SA) are two of the most isolated bacterial species from wounds, and both typically form highly organized biofilms. Nitric oxide (NO) is a short-lived, diatomic, lipophilic gas with antimicrobial activity.

Between 2022 and 2023, over a thousand larvae and pupae of sugarcane borers in the genus Diatraea Guilding, 1828, were collected in the state of Nayarit, Mexico, and reared to adults to identify them based on the morphology of genitalia. Although two species, Diatraea considerata Heinrich, 1931, and D. magnifactella Dyar, 1911, had been reported to occur in western Mexico, we discovered a new species of sugarcane borer, Diatraea nayaritella Robles & Solis, sp.

Importance: Recent evolutions in clinical care and remote monitoring suggest that some acute illnesses no longer require intravenous therapy and inpatient hospitalization.

Objective: To describe outcomes of patients receiving care in a new, outpatient, virtual, home-based acute care model called Safer@Home.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This retrospective cohort analysis, conducted from September 1, 2022, through August 31, 2023, included 2466 patients treated at a safety net hospital in Los Angeles County for 10 core illnesses and 24 other acute illnesses for which patients are commonly hospitalized.

In medicine, virological diagnosis is mainly based on the detection of the viral genome and antigens, or on the identification of specific antibodies produced in response to infection. These strategies are suitable for characterizing an active infection or past contact with an already known virus. The recent development of tests for evaluating the host's cellular immune response opens new perspectives for personalized patient care based on immunomonitoring.

The MTOR inhibitors have demonstrated antiviral properties, and prior non-randomized studies have suggested they may have a suppressive effect on BKPyV replication. Here, in this randomized, multicenter, controlled trial (BKEVER study), we sought to evaluate the impact of everolimus (EVR) in facilitating the clearance of BKPyV compared to simply reducing immunosuppression among kidney transplant recipients (KTRs). All together, 130 KTRs presenting with BKPyV DNAemia were randomized 1:1 into two groups.

Chronic non-healing wounds pose significant challenges due to an elevated inflammatory response caused in part by bacterial contamination (Physiol Rev. 2019;99:665). These wounds lead to billions being spent in the health care system worldwide (N Engl J Med.

The celiacomesenteric trunk (CMT) is a rare anatomical variant where the celiac axis and superior mesenteric artery share a common origin. Despite its rarity, CMT has significant implications across various medical fields, particularly in surgical planning and interventional procedures. We report a case of chronic mesenteric ischemia owing to atherosclerotic stenosis at the CMT bifurcation, necessitating a complex interventional approach.

With increasing textile consumption and limited sorting and recycling capacities, the EU faces major challenges in terms of managing its textile waste. This study investigates the environmental and socio-economic impacts of explorative policy scenarios for a more sustainable textile waste management system in Europe. These scenarios differ substantially in the amounts of textile waste generated and separately collected, closed-loop recycling capacities and textile waste exports.

Introduction: Nitric oxide (NO) is a lipophilic gas with potent antimicrobial activity. Several in vitro and in vivo studies have demonstrated the broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity of NO-releasing compounds against bacteria, viruses, and parasites. The objective of this study was to assess the efficacy of topical NO formations with sustained release on microbial reduction in wounds.

Leaf epicuticular waxes provide important anatomical and chemical defences against fungi that infect leaves. In this study we analysed the leaf wax composition of Eucalyptus grandis × Eucalyptus urophylla hybrids with contrasting susceptibilities to Teratosphaeria leaf blight (TLB) caused by Teratosphaeria destructans, one of the most important foliar diseases of Eucalyptus. The Eucalyptus cuticular wax was extracted from non-inoculated and inoculated genotypes with different levels of susceptibility to TLB and analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.

Objective: to identify the perception of professional empowerment among midwives in selected Latin American countries (LA). Specifically, this study aimed to compare i) the global level of empowerment among midwives in different LA countries, ii) the scores according to the different dimensions of the scale, and iii) scores according to area the of expertise.

Design: A quantitative, observational, analytical, cross-sectional and multisite study using an adaptation of the Perceptions Midwifery Empowerment Scale (PEMS).

Introduction: Debridement plays a critical role in wound management. In addition to removing necrotic tissue, debridement can eliminate bacteria frequently harbored within the tissue. This study evaluated a novel debridement method that uses plasma-based radiofrequency technology to remove tissue and bacteria.

Various genetic elements, including integrons, are known to contribute to the development of antimicrobial resistance. Class 1 integrons have been identified in isolates and are associated with multidrug resistance in countries of the Andean Community. However, detailed information on the gene cassettes located on the variable regions of integrons is lacking.

Brain-lung-thyroid syndrome (BLTS) is caused by haploinsufficiency, resulting in chorea/choreoathetosis, respiratory problems, and hypothyroidism. Genes interacting with NKX2-1 mutants influence its phenotypic variability. We report a novel missense variant and the modifier function of TAZ/WWTR1 in BLTS.

Background: Microorganisms tend to rely on close relationships with other species to survive. Consequently, biofilms formed by interactions of different species have been shown to delay the wound healing process. Studies suggest these mixed-population infections contribute to the development of drug resistance and inhibition of host immune response.

The ontogeny of feeding is characterized by shifting functional demands concurrent with changes in craniofacial anatomy; relationships between these factors will look different in primates with disparate feeding behaviors during development. This study examines the ontogeny of skull morphology and jaw leverage in tufted (Sapajus) and untufted (Cebus) capuchin monkeys. Unlike Cebus, Sapajus have a mechanically challenging diet and behavioral observations of juvenile Sapajus suggest these foods are exploited early in development.

Background: Intrauterine fetal demise is a recognized complication of coronavirus disease 2019 in pregnant women and is associated with histopathological placental lesions. The pathological mechanism and virus-induced immune response in the placenta are not fully understood. A detailed description of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)-induced inflammation in the placenta during fetal demise is crucial for improved clinical management.
