Strategies for academic nursing to advance global and planetary health: A call to action.

Nurses play a crucial role in addressing human health influenced by global forces such as pandemics, and political conflicts that displace millions; in leading efforts to promote planetary health; and in achieving the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Agenda. Academic nursing programs have a significant role in actualizing nursing's impact on global health (GH) and planetary health (PH). This paper describes how nursing programs can actualize their GH and PH nursing perspectives to benefit students and society, thereby increasing nursing's effectiveness and improving health outcomes in local and global settings.

How Do Persons Who Inject Drugs Experience Care From Nurses in Hospital Settings? A Qualitative Study.

People who inject drugs (PWID) are at increased risk of acute and chronic health outcomes and in need of in-hospital healthcare services. This study aims to give insight into how PWID experience care from nurses in hospital settings. We used a qualitative descriptive design and applied reflexive thematic analysis to 11 individual semi-structured interviews with PWID.

Sustaining a Concept-Based Curriculum: Beyond the Launch.

Background: Many schools of nursing are transitioning to a concept-based curriculum (CBC) to better prepare students to practice across complex practice settings.

Problem: Current literature focused on transitioning to a CBC lacks discussion on how to sustain a CBC once it is implemented.

Approach: In this article, the authors emphasize the importance of intentionally sustaining a dynamic CBC and provide strategies to accomplish this aspect of the curriculum trajectory.

Nano-sized emission from commercially available paints used for indoor surfaces during drying.

Consumers worry about the presence of nano-particles in paints and the risk of exposure. As a result, the paint industry now omits marketing paints as containing nanoparticles. The industry claims that no nanoparticles are released into the indoor environment; this, however, has yet to be documented.

The effect of cesarean delivery rates on the future incidence of placenta previa, placenta accreta, and maternal mortality.

Objective: The overall annual incidence rate of caesarean delivery in the United States has been steadily rising since 1996, reaching 32.9% in 2009. Primary cesareans often lead to repeat cesareans, which may lead to placenta previa and placenta accreta.

Quality of life in adults with brain tumors: current knowledge and future directions.

Quality of life is an important area of clinical neurooncology that is increasingly relevant as survivorship increases and as patients experience potential morbidities associated with new therapies. This review of quality-of-life studies in the brain tumor population aims to summarize what is currently known about quality of life in patients with both low-grade and high-grade tumors and suggest how we may use this knowledge to direct future research. To date, reports on quality of life have been primarily qualitative and focused on specific symptoms such as fatigue, sleep disorders, and cognitive dysfunction, as well as some symptom clusters.

Quality of life in low-grade glioma patients receiving temozolomide.

The purpose of this study was to describe the quality of life (QOL) of low-grade glioma (LGG) patients at baseline prior to chemotherapy and through 12 cycles of temozolomide (TMZ) chemotherapy. Patients with histologically confirmed LGG with only prior surgery were given TMZ for 12 cycles. QOL assessments by the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Brain (FACT-Br) were obtained at baseline prior to chemotherapy and at 2-month intervals while receiving TMZ.

Multidisciplinary teamwork in US primary health care.

Primary health care (PHC) is a systems perspective for examining the provision of essential health care for all. A multidisciplinary collaborative approach to health care delivery is associated with effective delivery and care providers' enrichment. Yet data regarding multidisciplinary practice within PHC are limited.

Ethical concerns in nurse migration.

International nurse migration is natural and to be expected. Recently, however, those who have fostered nurse migration believe that it will solve nursing shortages in developed countries and offer nurse migrants better working conditions and an improved quality of life. Whether natural or manipulated, migration flow patterns largely occur from developing to developed countries.

Patterns of community relationship: nurses, non-governmental organizations and internally displaced persons.

Background: Internally displaced persons (IDPs) are one of the largest at-risk populations in the world. Nurses provide health services to IDPs as staff of non-governmental organizations (NGO). IDPs are also employed to deliver NGO services.

Faculty and student cross-cultural learning through teaching health promotion in the community.

Cross-cultural learning for nursing students and faculty increased through a collaborative venture of teaching health promotion classes in a Hmong community. Through the learning process, nursing students and faculty learned about Hmong culture, and Hmong participants learned about health. The purpose of this article is to describe the process and evaluation of health promotion classes in a Hmong community.

[When children fall].

Second only to traffic accidents, accidental falling is the most significant cause of death in children. Included in this category is a special group of accidents--falling from a height--where preventative measures would give good results. Cases of child abuse have also been found in this group.

Routine ultrasonography in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis: a valuable tool in daily practice?

Initial clinical examination, laboratory inflammation parameters, and routine ultrasonography (US) were evaluated prospectively in 205 patients admitted for suspected acute appendicitis. The purpose of the study was to compare initial clinical examination and laboratory tests with the accuracy of US obtained in daily practice. All ultrasonographic examinations were performed by residents in radiology and radiologists qualified for routine abdominal US but not specifically trained in the diagnostics of appendicitis.

Diaphragmatic injuries.

A 6-year series of 26 patients with diaphragmatic injury is presented, 15 with rupture from blunt injuries and 11 after penetrating injuries. All had associated injuries and seven died because of these. The diagnosis may be difficult and was consequently delayed in two patients.
