Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is leading cause of blindness among diabetic patients. Recognition of severity level is required by ophthalmologists to early detect and diagnose the DR. However, it is a challenging task for both medical experts and computer-aided diagnosis systems due to requiring extensive domain expert knowledge.

Although human-to-human transmission of Mycobacterium bovis strains and other members of the animal lineage of the tubercle bacilli is a rare event, an extensively drug resistant (XDR) strain, named M. bovis B strain, caused a lethal outbreak in the nineties in Spain. The genome of M.

Despite being one of the first antitubercular agents identified, isoniazid (INH) is still the most prescribed drug for prophylaxis and tuberculosis (TB) treatment and, together with rifampicin, the pillars of current chemotherapy. A high percentage of isoniazid resistance is linked to mutations in the pro-drug activating enzyme KatG, so the discovery of direct inhibitors (DI) of the enoyl-ACP reductase (InhA) has been pursued by many groups leading to the identification of different enzyme inhibitors, active against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), but with poor physicochemical properties to be considered as preclinical candidates. Here, we present a series of InhA DI active against multidrug (MDR) and extensively (XDR) drug-resistant clinical isolates as well as in TB murine models when orally dosed that can be a promising foundation for a future treatment.

The study of touch has recently grown, due mainly to the extensive use of several types of actuators that stimulate several subsystems of touch. There is a widespread interest in applying these mechanisms to the study of the neurophysiological correlates of tactual perception. In this article, we present a new device (the tactile spinning wheel [TSW]) for delivering textured surfaces to the finger pad.

Two xanthophyll cycles have been described in higher plants: the violaxanthin xanthophyll (V or VAZ) cycle, which is present in all species, and the taxonomically restricted lutein epoxide xanthophyll (Lx) cycle, which involves the light-induced de-epoxidation of Lx to lutein (L) and its epoxidation back to Lx in low light. Laboratory experiments indicate that the first reaction occurs quickly, but the second reaction is much slower. We investigated the Lx cycle under field conditions in several tree species of the Lauraceae family to determine its relationship with the ubiquitous V cycle.

Between 1980 and 2003, 13 patients (0.95% of all cases of tuberculosis) at a 600-bed university hospital in Madrid, Spain, were diagnosed with Mycobacterium bovis infection. All 13 cases occurred between 1994 and 1999; the mean age of the patients was 50 years (range 23-83 years), and 77% were males.

A novel rapidly growing, non-pigmented mycobacterium was isolated from blood samples obtained from 17 patients with febrile syndrome. Bacterial growth occurred at 30 and 37 degrees C on Löwenstein-Jensen medium and also on MacConkey agar without crystal violet. Strains contained alpha- and alpha'-mycolates in their cell wall.

The prevalence of mutations in the katG, inhA and oxyR-ahpC genes of isoniazid (INH)-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates in the Philippines were determined. Of 306 M. tuberculosis isolates studied, 81 (26.

Mutations of the 81-bp-core region of rpoB gene associated with rifampicin resistance were studied in 169 clinical strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolated from Spain between 1996 and 2001. The analysis identified 16 single base changes, one deletion, two insertions and five multiple mutations (with two or three codons implicated). Eight strains had no mutations, although they were resistant by the proportion method.

We performed a study to determine the usefulness of SDS-PAGE of whole cell proteins for the characterization of species of rapidly growing mycobacteria belonging to the Mycobacterium fortuitum complex. Strains included 37 M. fortuitum, 32 M.

We report a case of lung infection due to Mycobacterium simiae in an immunocompromised patient without acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. The patient had multiple pulmonary nodules similar to those seen in cases of lung disease caused by Mycobacterium avium in elderly women. Appropriate therapy for M.
