Purpose: In recent times, "ringing the bell" at the end of cancer treatment has attracted the attention of health care providers with regard to how this experience impacts patients' mental and emotional health. In this context, a study was conducted at a radiation oncology center in Santiago, Chile, to assess the perceived valorization of patients toward "ringing the bell" at the end of their treatment. It was further determined whether this experience had a positive or negative impact on their mental health.

Background: Consultation-liaison psychiatrists frequently address dyspnea in intensive care unit (ICU) patients. Dyspnea is common in this patient population, but is frequently misunderstood and underappreciated in noncommunicative ICU patients.

Objective: This paper provides an updated review on dyspnea specifically in the ICU population, including its pathophysiology and management, pharmacological and nonpharmacological, aimed at consultation-liaison psychiatrists consulting in ICU.

Background: The optimal duration of androgen deprivation combined with high-dose radiotherapy in prostate cancer remains controversial. The DART 01/05 trial was designed to determine whether long-term androgen deprivation is superior to short-term androgen deprivation when combined with high-dose radiotherapy. The 5-year results showed that 2 years of adjuvant androgen deprivation combined with high-dose radiotherapy significantly improved biochemical control, metastasis, and overall survival, especially in patients with high-risk disease.

The need for alternative energy systems like offshore wind power to move towards the Green Deal objectives is undeniable. However, it is also increasingly clear that biodiversity loss and climate change are interconnected issues that must be tackled in unison. In this paper we highlight that offshore wind farms (OWF) in the Mediterranean Sea (MS) pose serious environmental risks to the seabed and the biodiversity of many areas due to the particular ecological and socioeconomic characteristics and vulnerability of this semi-enclosed sea.

Antibiotic resistance is a major public health challenge, and Gram-negative multidrug-resistant bacteria are particularly dangerous. The threat of running out of active molecules is accelerated by the extensive use of antibiotics in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, and new antibiotics are urgently needed. Colistin and polymyxin B are natural antibiotics considered as last resort drugs for multi-resistant infections, but their use is limited because of neuro- and nephrotoxicity.

The aim of this study was to compare the immediate effects of cold-water immersion (CWI) and hot-water immersion (HWI) versus passive resting after a fatigue-induced bout of exercise on the muscle contractile properties of the Vastus Medialis (VM). We conducted a randomised cross-over study involving 28 healthy active men where muscle contractile properties of the VM wer recorded using Tensiomyography (TMG) before and after CWI, HWI or passive resting and up to one-hour post-application. The main outcomes obtained were muscle displacement and velocity of deformation according to limb size (Dmr and Vdr).

Background: The purpose of this study was to analyze whether the level of IgA is related to right ventricular function and systemic congestion in patients with decompensated heart failure (HF) and reduced ejection fraction (EF).

Methods: This was a consecutive prospective and observational study of hospitalized patients diagnosed with decompensated HF with reduced EF. The recruitment period lasted 2 months.

Article Synopsis
  • Dermatological emergencies account for 15% of emergency department consultations, with variations in prevalence between public (10.6%) and private (22.5%) health segments.
  • The main reasons for these consultations include infectious diseases (35.5%), allergies (29.6%), and neoplastic conditions (8.6%), with a very small percentage leading to hospitalization (0.7%).
  • A significant discrepancy in diagnosis accuracy was noted; 80.7% of patients evaluated by dermatologists had consistent diagnoses, compared to only 52.6% when seen by non-dermatologist physicians, highlighting the need for specialized dermatology care in emergencies.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the impact of serum testosterone levels on the outcomes of localized prostate cancer in patients undergoing androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) and high-dose radiotherapy (HRT).
  • Analysis of testosterone levels in patients treated with long-term ADT showed no significant survival differences for those with lower testosterone (<20 ng/dL) compared to medium levels (20-49 ng/dL).
  • Higher testosterone levels (≥50 ng/dL) were linked to worse biochemical disease-free survival, while the timing of testosterone recovery post-treatment did not influence clinical outcomes.

Measuring the quality of digital videos viewed by human observers has become a common practice in numerous multimedia applications, such as adaptive video streaming, quality monitoring, and other digital TV applications. Here we explore a significant, yet relatively unexplored problem: measuring perceptual quality on videos arising from both luma and chroma distortions from compression. Toward investigating this problem, it is important to understand the kinds of chroma distortions that arise, how they relate to luma compression distortions, and how they can affect perceived quality.

The present study examines a group of secondary teachers' and parents' appraisals of gender gaps in secondary students' self-assessment of competence in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and non-STEM domains. Eight focus groups with 39 parents and 34 secondary teachers were conducted for this purpose. In light of the observed gender gaps in students' performance and self-perception of ability in the different subject areas, the participants were particularly surprised by girls' underestimation of their abilities in STEM subjects, compared with boys' tendency to overestimate their abilities in STEM.

Background: This study aims to assess the effects of non-adherence to external beam radiation therapy in cancer patients receiving treatment with a curative.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study collected health records data for all cancer patients treated with external beam radiotherapy with curative intent in 2016 in Catalonia, Spain. Adherence was defined as having received at least 90% of the total dose prescribed.

Although the motion of a single nanoparticle suspended in a fluid can be easily modeled, things get complicated for non-infinitely diluted systems. Coincidentally, these are the systems of interest in relevant fields such as, nanomedicine, microfluidics and miniaturized energy storage devices. Hence, a better understanding of the dynamics of colloidal nanoparticles is utterly needed.

Information on the buoyancy of eggs and larvae from deep-sea species is rare but necessary for explaining the position of non-swimming larvae in the water column. Due to embryonic morphology and ecology diversities, egg buoyancy has important variations within one species and among other ones. Nevertheless, it has hardly been explored if this buoyancy variability can be a strategy for deep-sea larvae to optimize their transport beyond their spawning areas.

Brain imaging methods have contributed to shed light on the mechanisms of recovery after early brain insult. The assumption that the unaffected right hemisphere can take over language functions after left perinatal stroke is still under debate. Here, we report how patterns of brain structural and functional reorganization were associated with language outcomes in a group of four-year-old children with left perinatal arterial ischemic stroke (PAIS).

Parapharyngeal infection is the most common deep neck space infection in children and, in rare instances, can result in bony destruction of the cervical spine. We report one such case that required occipital to cervical fusion and halo-vest fixation. We also review the literature and discuss the etiology, diagnosis, and treatment options for managing pediatric cervical bony destruction secondary to infection.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has been related to an impairment of the nutritional status. Body mass index (BMI) has been used but questions arise about how to properly evaluate nutritional status in RA patients. Few studies have evaluated it by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry.

The number of organs retrieved from donation after circulatory death (DCD) donors has continued to rise in recent years. The functional superiority of DCD organs is achieved when the lungs are perfused with cold perfusion and livers with normothermic regional perfusion (NRP). Thus, a precise surgical technique is required to combine thoracic and abdominal organ procurement.

Introduction: Lung disease is the major cause of death among cystic fibrosis (CF) patients, affecting 80% of the population. The impact of extracorporeal circulation (ECC) during transplantation has not been fully clarified. This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of lung transplantation for CF in a single center, and to assess the impact of ECC on survival.
