Skin lesion images are relatively easy to obtain, but variations in imaging conditions, particularly lesion positioning, can cause inconsistencies in deep learning model activations, impacting diagnostic reliability. In this study, a robust deep-learning model for melanoma prediction was developed using class-agnostic activation maps (CAAMs) for enhanced diagnostic accuracy and reliability by addressing issues related to image variability and transformation robustness. The international skin imaging collaboration (ISIC) 2017 and 2019 datasets, focusing on melanoma and nevus, were used.

We aimed to investigate the association between acute carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning and the risk of internal malignancies, including hematologic malignancies. The study population was derived from the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) database of Korea between 2002 and 2022. Adults diagnosed with CO poisoning and controls were included.

Background: Oxidative stress causes fatal damage to follicular keratinocytes (FKCs) and is a common pathophysiology of many hair disorders.

Objective: This study investigated the protective effects of Red ginseng extract (RGE) and its main ginsenosides against oxidative hair damage using an organ model of human hair follicles.

Methods: We examined whether RGE and its constituent ginsenosides could prevent oxidative damage induced by H₂O₂ in FKCs by suppressing apoptosis and promoting hair growth.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to explore the long-term risks of autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases following COVID-19, addressing a gap in existing research.
  • The study utilized a large national database, including over 6.9 million participants, with those who had confirmed COVID-19 compared against a control group from 2018.
  • Results indicated an increased risk of various disorders, such as alopecia, vitiligo, Crohn's disease, and rheumatoid arthritis, in COVID-19 patients, suggesting a significant association between the virus and these health issues.

Introduction: Carbon monoxide poisoning may result in various neurological injuries, including acute symptomatic seizures. We aimed to investigate the long-term risk of epilepsy and status epilepticus in patients with previous carbon monoxide poisoning.

Methods: The study population was derived from the National Health Insurance Service database of the Republic of Korea between 1 January 2002 and 31 December 2021.

Purpose: To assess the effects of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) compared to placebo or other medical treatments in men with sexual dysfunction.

Materials And Methods: We performed a comprehensive search with no restrictions on publication language or status up to 29 August 2023. We only included randomized controlled trials (RCTs).

Objectives: Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning can cause brain, heart, and kidney injuries. We aimed to determine the association of risks of all-cause and cause-specific mortality in patients with previous CO poisoning.

Design, Setting, And Patients: This population-based cohort study used data from the National Health Insurance Service database and the National Death Registry of Korea.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the long-term link between mRNA COVID-19 vaccinations and autoimmune connective tissue diseases (AI-CTDs) among over 9 million people.
  • There was no significant increase in the risk of most AI-CTDs after vaccination, except for a slight increase in systemic lupus erythematosus risk (1.16-fold).
  • Booster vaccinations were found to be associated with a higher risk of conditions like alopecia areata, psoriasis, and rheumatoid arthritis, indicating the need for further research.

Introduction: Carbon monoxide poisoning is associated with severe damage to various organs. In this study, we aimed to determine if previous carbon monoxide poisoning was associated with an increased risk of lung diseases.

Methods: The study population was derived from the National Health Insurance Service database of Korea between 1 January 2002 and 31 December 2021.

Background: Vitiligo is a chronic autoimmune disease characterised by depigmented skin patches, which can pose substantial psychosocial challenges particularly in individuals with dark skin tones. Despite its impact on quality of life, there is an absence of standardised global epidemiological data. We sought to address this gap with the present study.

Background: Alopecia areata (AA) is a chronic autoimmune disease that leads to a high psychiatric, economic and systemic disease burden. A comprehensive understanding of AA epidemiology is essential for evaluating healthcare source utilization; however, a systematic approach to summarizing epidemiological data on AA is lacking.

Objectives: To investigate systematically the global, regional and national incidence and prevalence of AA.

Background: Clinical practice guidelines recommend testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) for men with sexual dysfunction and testosterone deficiency. However, TRT is commonly promoted in men without testosterone deficiency and existing trials often do not clearly report participants' testosterone levels or testosterone-related symptoms. This review assesses the potential benefits and harms of TRT in men presenting with complaints of sexual dysfunction.

Background: In superficial fungal infections, prompt diagnosis and treatment are essential to prevent the spread of infection and minimise the impact on patients' quality of life. Traditional diagnostic methods, such as KOH smear and fungal culture, have limitations in terms of sensitivity and turnaround time. Recently, the PCR-reverse blot hybridization assay (PCR-REBA) has been developed for the direct detection of dermatophyte DNA.

In this study, a combined convolutional neural network for the diagnosis of three benign skin tumors was designed, and its effectiveness was verified through quantitative and statistical analysis. To this end, 698 sonographic images were taken and diagnosed at the Department of Dermatology at Severance Hospital in Seoul, Korea, between 10 November 2017 and 17 January 2020. Through an empirical process, a convolutional neural network combining two structures, which consist of a residual structure and an attention-gated structure, was designed.

Vitiligo is a common autoimmune skin disorder; however, there is limited information about risks of mortality among patients with vitiligo. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the mortality in patients with vitiligo. A population-based cohort study was conducted using the data linkage of the National Health Insurance Service database and the National Death Registry.

  • Patients with lichen planopilaris (LPP) are at an increased risk of developing several comorbid diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus, psoriasis, and rheumatoid arthritis, according to a nationwide study in Korea.
  • The research analyzed data from over 2,000 LPP patients and found they had higher incident rates of several conditions, as well as a higher mortality rate compared to matched controls, although the latter risk was not significant after adjusting for other health factors.
  • The study highlights the importance of regular monitoring and comprehensive care for patients diagnosed with LPP to better manage these associated health risks.

Left ventricular hypertrophy is a significant independent risk factor for all-cause mortality and morbidity, and an accurate diagnosis at an early stage of heart change is clinically significant. Electrocardiography is the most convenient, economical, and non-invasive method for screening in primary care. However, the coincidence rate of the actual left ventricular hypertrophy and diagnostic findings was low, consequently increasing the interest in algorithms using big data and deep learning.
