Scope: Epidemiological studies provide evidence that consumption of cruciferous vegetables, like broccoli, can reduce the risk of cancer development. Sulforaphane (SFN) is a phytochemical derived from cruciferous vegetables that induces anti-proliferative and pro-apoptotic responses in prostate cancer cells, but not in normal prostate cells. The mechanisms responsible for this cancer-specific cytotoxicity remain unclear.

Ultrastructural and stereological analysis of mitochondria of myocardiac cells from rats was performed after 2-hour breathing of helium-oxygen mixture. The following changes were observed in the cells of experimental animals as compared with the control ones: swelling of mitochondria, increase of the mean volume fraction of these structures and decrease of axial ratio of mitochondria.

In 35 subjects the effect of breathing an oxygen-helium mixture or oxygen during 10 minutes under positive pressure of 40 hPa was studied. Immediately before positive-pressure breathing, in the last minute of this breathing, and 30 minutes after its and blood samples were taken for investigations. Positive-pressure breathing caused in both groups a rise-in the haematocrit value, total protein, albumin and glucose levels.
