The formula of a new stable 20% benzylbenzoate emulsion is presented, so are the results of studies on its toxicity, local irritating and sensitizing effects in guinea pigs. For comparison, the same characteristics of currently used 20% water-soap benzylbenzoate emulsion and of the new ointment base, SAKAP (acryl copolymer), have been examined. Both the ointment and its base have proved to be safe.

The authors analyze the features of the epidemic process in scabies and review foreign and Soviet literature on the seasonal pattern of this condition. They have introduced the mite fertility index, that is determined by the number of eggs in the mite burrow, counted with the use of a new laboratory diagnostic technique with lactic acid. The studies have revealed that this index is high in September-December (11.

The national recombinant preparation of alpha 2-interferon (reaferon) after intramuscular inoculation in a daily dose of 3 X 10(6) units/ml to human volunteers was found in the blood serum within 1-2 hours. In 85% of the subjects given the preparation, a 2-8-fold rise in interferon titers in the blood serum and in 64% an increase in interferon leukocyte reaction (ILR) by the 5th day after the beginning of the treatment were observed. In the examined influenza patients given the preparation, interferon circulation in the blood serum, increased ILR and 2-5A synthetase enzyme levels were demonstrated.

The species composition of methanogenic bacteria taking part in thermophilic and mesophilic methanogenesis of cattle manure was studied. In both cases methanogenic bacteria belonging to the genera Methanosarcina, Methanothrix, and Methanobacterium were identified. The description of Methanosarcina thermophila, Methanosarcina mazei, Methanothrix thermoacetophila and Methanobacterium thermoformicicum are given.

Some new opiate-like peptides originating from opioid peptide precursors, dinorphine, histone H2b, major myeline protein, natriuretic atriopeptide and from the immunomodulating protein splenin whose primary structure differs essentially from that of enkephalins are described. Being intracysternally injected to mice, all the peptides under study caused a naloxone-sensitive analgetic effect as could be judged from the tail pinch tests. The effects of some opiate-like peptides were much stronger than that of leu-enkephalin.

An examination of 43 patients with acute diffuse peritonitis of various etiology has revealed different direction of the dynamics of indices of humoral immunity (M, G, A immunoglobulins, general complement activity, circulating immune complexes) depending on the level of middle mass polypeptides (MMP) in the patient's blood. Hemosorption in peritonitis was established to allow rapid and effective elimination of MMP in patients with high content and thus control critical endotoxicosis.

Some biochemical disorders in the animals' central nervous system mainly in brain have been analysed after the exposure to superlethal doses of ionizing radiation as well in a state of the so-called early transient incapacity. The metabolism of gamma-aminobutyric acid, ammonia, histamine, cyclic nucleotides, prostaglandins and other biologically active substances is compared. Their investigation as metabolic regulators and modulators for nerve tissue seems to be of particular importance for deciphering the molecular mechanisms of changes in the central nervous system functional state and for discovering the possibility of its maintaining at a given level of activity.

The main parameters of humoral and cellular immunity as well as indices of nonspecific body resistance were studied in 70 patients with iron deficiency anemia. A decrease in the content of the main classes of immunoglobulins and an increase in the CIC level were noted. Routine therapy brought about a tendency toward the restoration of indices of humoral immunity.

The experimental data on the role of the cyclic nucleotides (cAMP, cGMP) in the mammalian integrating systems and their significance in the processes of adaptation and radiosensitivity change of animals are analysed. The changes in the system of cyclic nucleotides (CN) are reported for a number of morbid conditions at the subunit level. The CN system changes as a body response to the extreme action including ionizing radiation are revealed.

In the controlled trial carried out among children aged 1-4 years, the safety, reactogenicity and immunological potency of group A meningococcal polysaccharide vaccine produced at the Gabrichevskiĭ Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology (Moscow) were studied. The vaccine under test was introduced in two doses containing 15 and 25 micrograms of meningococcal polysaccharide. Both doses were shown to be safe, faintly reactogenic and immunologically potent.

Different histone fractions contain sequences homologous to those of several regulatory peptides. All the histone fractions demonstrated dose-dependent positive chronotropic effect in spontaneously contracting rat atrial preparations. The range of their activity was as follows: H4 greater than H1 greater than H2a much greater than H3.

Study on the primary structure of more than 100 regulatory peptides was carried out with the view of determining their structural similarity. Practically all regulatory peptides appeared to be related to each other. One regulatory peptide can bear similarity to several regulatory peptides (RPs) which is realized by different fragments.

The high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) analysis of progesterone, oxyprogesterone capronate and dehydroacetoxyprogesterone has been carried out successfully using so-called "test impurities". The quantitative and qualitative analysis of related compounds was studied by normal-phase HPLC with a UV detector (254 nm) using ethyl acetate-chloroform (98.5:1.
