The [Mo(3)S(4)Cl(3)(dhprpe)(3)](+) (1(+)) cluster cation has been prepared by reaction between Mo(3)S(4)Cl(4)(PPh(3))(3) (solvent)(2) and the water-soluble 1,2-bis(bis(hydroxypropyl)phosphino)ethane (dhprpe, L) ligand. The crystal structure of [1](2)[Mo(6)Cl(14)] has been determined by X-ray diffraction methods and shows the typical incomplete cuboidal structure with a capping and three bridging sulfides. The octahedral coordination around each metal center is completed with a chlorine and two phosphorus atoms of the diphosphine ligand.

Purpose: In rods saturated by light, the G protein transducin undergoes translocation from the outer segment compartment, which results in the uncoupling of transducin from its innate receptor, rhodopsin. We measured the kinetics of recovery from this adaptive cellular response, while also investigating the role of phosducin, a phosphoprotein binding transducin βγ subunits in its de-phosphorylated state, in regulating this process.

Methods: Mice were exposed to a moderate rod-saturating light triggering transducin translocation, and then allowed to recover in the dark while free running.

MicroRNAs (miRNA) comprise a group of short ribonucleic acid molecules implicated in regulation of key biological processes and functions at the post-transcriptional level. Ionizing radiation (IR) causes DNA damage and generally triggers cellular stress response. However, the role of miRNAs in IR-induced response in human embryonic stem cells (hESC) has not been defined yet.

Heterometallic cuboidal clusters [Mo(3)S(4)M(H(2)O)(9)Cl](3+) M = Pd or Ni react with the trivacant [AsW(9)O(33)](9-) anion to give tetramodular complexes [(H(2)AsW(9)O(33))(4){Mo(3)S(4)M(H(2)O)(5)}(2)](20-) (M = Pd for anion 2 and M = Ni for anion 3) in good yield. Both anions crystallized as single crystals of potassium salts to give K-2 and K-3 salts which have been characterized structurally by X-ray diffraction. Both compounds are isomorphous and the anions 2 and 3 are described as two dimeric moeties, associated by internal hydrogen bonds, electrostatic interactions involving four outer potassium ion and coordination bonds within a central {M(2)S(2)} unit containing a M-M metallic bond.

Reaction of the cyclic lacunary [H(7)P(8)W(48)O(184)](33-) anion (noted P(8)W(48)) with the [Mo(2)S(2)O(2)(H(2)O)(6)](2+) oxothiocation led to two compounds, namely, [K(4){Mo(4)O(4)S(4)(H(2)O)(3)(OH)(2)}(2)(WO(2))(P(8)W(48)O(184))](30-) (denoted 1) and [{Mo(4)O(4)S(4)(H(2)O)(3)(OH)(2)}(2)(P(8)W(48)O(184))](36-) (denoted 2), which were characterized in the solid state and solution. In the solid state, the structure of [K(4){Mo(4)O(4)S(4)(H(2)O)(3)(OH)(2)}(2)(WO(2))(P(8)W(48)O(184))](30-) reveals the presence of two disordered {Mo(4)O(4)S(4)(H(2)O)(3)(OH)(2)}(2+) "handles" connected on both sides of the P(8)W(48) ring. Such a disorder is consistent with the presence of two geometrical isomers where the relative disposition of the two {Mo(4)O(4)S(4)(H(2)O)(3)(OH)(2)}(2+) handles are arranged in a perpendicular or parallel mode.

Usher syndrome is the most common deafness-blindness caused by genetic mutations. To date, three genes have been identified underlying the most prevalent form of Usher syndrome, the type II form (USH2). The proteins encoded by these genes are demonstrated to form a complex in vivo.

The first Keggin-type heteropolyanion, [PW(11)O(39)Ir(H(2)O)](4-) (1), was synthesized by hydrothermal reaction from two different polytungstate precursors and [IrF(6)](2-). It was isolated as (Bu(4)N)(4)[PW(11)O(39)Ir(H(2)O)] (1a), which was completely characterized by multinuclear (31)P and (183)W NMR, ESI-mass spectrometry and cyclic voltammetry. A rapid screening methodology to ascertain the intrinsic substitutional lability at the Ir site is also presented, based on ESI-MS.

New complexes (Bu(4)N)(2)[Mo(6)X(8)(n-C(3)F(7)COO)(6)] (X = Br, I) display extraordinarily bright long-lived red phosphorescence both in solution and solid phases, with the highest emission quantum yields and the longest emission lifetimes among hexanuclear metal cluster complexes of Mo, W and Re, hitherto reported.

One of the key consequences of exposure of human cells to genotoxic agents is the activation of DNA damage responses (DDR). While the mechanisms underpinning DDR in fully differentiated somatic human cells have been studied extensively, molecular signaling events and pathways involved in DDR in pluripotent human embryonic stem cells (hESC) remain largely unexplored. We studied changes in the human genome-wide transcriptome of H9 hESC line following exposures to 1Gy of gamma-radiation at 2h and 16h post-irradiation.

The papillary cancer and the follicular cancer are the most common forms of thyroid malignitet. Based on 30-year follow up of 430 patients, who underwent differentiated thyroid cancer surgery, the incidence of the lymph nodes metastases and the rate of postoperative recurrence of the disease was studied and the performance criteria of modified radical lymph node dissection of the neck were specified. Papillary cancer patients were 77.

Background: The radiation-induced "bystander effect" (RIBE) was shown to occur in a number of experimental systems both in vitro and in vivo as a result of exposure to ionizing radiation (IR). RIBE manifests itself by intercellular communication from irradiated cells to non-irradiated cells which may cause DNA damage and eventual death in these bystander cells. It is known that human stem cells (hSC) are ultimately involved in numerous crucial biological processes such as embryologic development; maintenance of normal homeostasis; aging; and aging-related pathologies such as cancerogenesis and other diseases.

Type II Chaperonin Containing TCP-1 (CCT, also known as TCP-1 Ring Complex, TRiC) is a multi-subunit molecular machine thought to assist in the folding of ∼ 10% of newly translated cytosolic proteins in eukaryotes. A number of proteins folded by CCT have been identified in yeast and cultured mammalian cells, however, the function of this chaperonin in vivo has never been addressed. Here we demonstrate that suppressing the CCT activity in mouse photoreceptors by transgenic expression of a dominant-negative mutant of the CCT cofactor, phosducin-like protein (PhLP), results in the malformation of the outer segment, a cellular compartment responsible for light detection, and triggers rapid retinal degeneration.

Structural features of neurons create challenges for effective production and distribution of essential metabolic energy. We investigated how metabolic energy is distributed between cellular compartments in photoreceptors. In avascular retinas, aerobic production of energy occurs only in mitochondria that are located centrally within the photoreceptor.

Human embryonic stem cells (hESC) are capable to give rise to all cell types in the human body during the normal course of development. Therefore, these cells hold a great promise in regenerative cell replacement based therapeutical approaches. However, some controversy exists in literature concerning the ultimate fate of hESC after exposure to genotoxic agents, in particular, regarding the effect of DNA damaging insults on pluripotency of hESC.
